  • I'm thinking the reason they made Douglas bild black in the american version is because most of the enemies in the game are of different nationalities and they didn't want to stir any racial controversy.

  • hell the world is more racist now then ever, It's starting to show more to and not be hidden.

  • This is not a review more like a comprising and you're being bias.

  • the nutcracker was the worst.... lol... I liked to crack everybody on the nuts... but was frustrated because he didn't do that to girls... only maybe if there are girls among the enemy troops... but it's generally kinda rare to see girls being low blowed in 2D games... Agressors of Dark Combat and Tatoo Warriors are exceptions... but there are problably more exceptions... and low blows hurt more on girls!!!

  • @Espingardeiro

Oh don't forget the speical moves of Johnny Cage's nutbuster from Mortal Kombat

  • Oozie Nelson/Slash Look a like Kool Moe Dee. LOL!

  • How the hell is making oozie Black racist? That was a predjudice remark.

  • I know what you mean, the fact that the reviewer made such a remark as to being almost appalled is what's racist. Personally, I think making the guy black was a good idea.

  • I like how changing a playable character to black makes them racist. Excluding a black character could be considered racist...not including one.

  • what would you do if you see the guys on Rival Turf box art on the street?

  • Ya so Maria Norton is a News Reported that would explain in the opening were she's holding a tape that contains evidence of the drug trade led by the Joecal's gang and something else they plan.

  • garageman1989, In the last stage of Rushing Beat, the three bosses from stage 1, 3, 5 are back and more powerful than ever and I think that The leader of the Joecal's Gang called Kintark was trying to do a cloning experiment in that lab, so the bosses from stage 1, 3, 5 that appear in the last stage are actually clones of the original that Kintark created.

  • In Rival Turf the last stage is called Hideout but in Rushing Beat the last stage is called Joecal's Lab.

  • ...and "Joecal" is an anagram of "Jaleco". :)

  • Wow, wouldn't have figured that out myself! It always sounded like a goofy name, and the last boss wasn't even called Joecal so I wondered what that name was about.

  • Well as for the ending they really remove a lot of it. The ending shows that Rick Norton and Douglas Bild are about to finish the leader of the joecal's gang but Maria Norton intervene the fight and she said not kill him because this bad man is actualy the father of Rick and Maria Norton and they both were shock about this and then he dies at the end what a tragic thing and then come the end credit. Well I think the US really remove thing and we hate it.

  • Comment removed

  • @Sp0UtDuDe03 Rushing Beat came out BEFORE "Ryuko no Ken" though. :)

  • garageman1989, Jaleco USA really remove the opening and ending the storyline for Rushing Beat, in the Opening story of the first Rushing Beat we see the appearance Rick Norton sister Maria Norton how she was kipnap by a crimminal organization called the joecal's gang and Norton meet's Douglas Bild how he think's that Norton was one of the joecal's gang and the two of them join forces take down the joecal's gang and rescue his sister.

  • I read somewhere else, where they translated the opening cutscene that the story was pretty much: Rick Norton, officer of the Neo Cisco State Police is approached behind by a thug who tells him that his sister Maria was kidnapped. Maria is an aspiring reporter who got her hand on a tape with evidence about a big drug trade, so to keep her from snitching the organization/gang kidnapped her. They tell Norton to bring the tape to City Stadium the next day. Norton asks for Bild's help, game starts.

  • I agree with you, the changes are stupid. But I do like the music. And is one of the main reasons I still remember this overlooked game.

  • suck my fat meaty cock you asian prick

  • Wen i was 7 i used to play Rival Turf whit my younger brother and loved the game. But as you say the fucking box was awuful, the guys look so gay that always wanted to kick their asses all the way around. And i agree whit you about all the changes.

  • That explains the lost music that showed up in the options on Rival Turf when you played some of the tracks on the sound test

  • mee too

  • Yes I do like the music.

  • me too.

  • Whoa three thumbs down. c'mon people you can do better then that :).

  • Did I say I want to be japanese? No. I just wanted america to localize rushing beat the right way without removing or changing certain stuff.

  • That's true you didn't.So sorry for that. But think aboutit. We aren't the only people here in america they probably made the guy black to appeal the game to blacks as well. Everything in the world doesn't have to be white cause we are.

  • you know, you got a point there. Everything in the world doesn't have to be white, which is why they localized it and which make perfect sense as well.

  • well he didnt look black to me...just tanned...hmm

either way it was a sucky game all the same

  • The only game in history where you get to play as a black Nazi communist.

  • It probably wasn't Jaleco that messed it up.

It was more likely Nintendo of America, or the distributer in the states at the time.

Perhaps there was a legal/copy right issue as to why they could not have used 'Rushing Beat' as the name.

As for other changes... who knows..

  • Very interesting. I enjoyed playing Rival Turf back in the day. But I was very ignorant of the JP and US versions at the time. I still don't know why Jaleco changed all those things...

Anyway, I disagree with your opinion on the Music. I think it rocks! One of my favorite 16-bit beat'em up soundtracks. But it will never hold a candle to Streets of rage's soundtrack.

  • Yes, even though the original "Rushing Beat", like the original "Streets of Rage" (except worse) is horribly dated, I've come to rather enjoy its soundtrack over time, especially the CATCHY tune that plays during the last level. RBS/Peace Keepers also contains great music, and I haven't played much of RBFK/Brawl Brothers, but the music sounds similar to Peace Keepers.

  • I so agree, Jaelco USA fucked up an awsome beat'em series by changing the story, music, sprites, portraits and gave them horrible boxart,I mean, why does the river turf boxart feature rejects from Saved by the Fuckin bell instead of the 2 main characters Rick and Douglase? WTF???

  • I own Rival Turf for like 14 years now and the names never bothered me , I have the European version which has a much cooler boxart. It didn't have any lame guys on it , just a broken wall and some graffiti saying Rival Turf.

  • A lot of these changes are really the result of crappy localizations made by the company themselves and are not really censorship. Many Jaleco games had crappy localizations, not just Rushing Beat, and a lot of them were made before the ESRB was established. The plot of Rushing Beat is nothing special. Rick Norton of the Neo Cisco PD learns that his sister kidnapped and fights his way to rescue her. The plot twist in the end of Rushing Beat is a total ripoff of Art of Fighting.

  • BTW. I believe this is supposed to be a sequel to 64th Street, a 1990 arcade-only beat-em-up released by Jaleco. The main characters in both game are named Rick and I believe the city in 64th Street was named Cisco.

  • Perhaps they're both based in the same Jaleco universe. "64th Street" seems to take place during the '30's and/or '40's, while the "Rushing Beat" games are obviously more modern and probably take place during the '80's-'90's.

  • What about Douglas Bild? The text goes by too fast for me to read it, but I think Bild joins the fight to avenge his father, or something like that?

  • "Art of Fighting" came out in the fall of 1992, while "Rushing Beat" came out in the spring of '92. Regardless, thanks for summing up the original plot. If only they'd release translation patches for all three RB games.

So Norton and Bild are both members of this "Neo Cisco PD"? And are the locales in RB still based on San Francisco and South America or was that a "Rival Turf" creation?

  • LOL at the "They turned the guy black!" thing.

  • jaleco rules. I've enjoyed the 2nd one alot!

  • theis game was and is still awesome. the first stage music kicked ass.

  • What's the music at the beginning from?

  • nekketsu kouha kunio kun

  • Correct. It was also used in a few other games featuring Technos (and Atlus), especially with the 'Dodgeball' franchise of video games for both NES and GBA.

Its a 'victory fanfare' of sorts, but it definitely all started with Nekketsu!

  • lol...no nut cracker? i actually played this game way back in 94'

  • damn this review sucks. i have this game and iu like it...only it doesent work anymore and i cant fix it

  • xD excellent review man!

  • This real life picture of the game called Rival Turf.

So why this two guys on this games? The red jacket looks Attitude named Jack Flak=Norton. and the top black Jacktet is Nelson=Bild. Am i right or wrong? I'm Just Wondering.

  • Same here that is one of my things I need to do next to Meet Megumi Ogata and Swim with the dolphins.

  • Actually the game in both versions is located in Los Angelas.

  • Agreed the Japanese should be damn greatfull for there great games.

  • The guys on the cover of "Rival Turf" look like they just walked off the set of an "after school special" TV show about saying no to drugs!

  • LMAO

  • Haha those box covers made me laugh XD..

But that's how 80's early 90's western box covers look like: CRAP...

Ever seen Master system Box covers... Those where the worst. And lookes what the japanese got on the MARK 3 (the japanese MS)..

  • Very true, just look at the First Mega Man box cover. The Master System box covers were horrible, like pro wrestling, they only drew a body (with no head) performing a headlock on a head (with no body).

  • he did the nutcracker! Classic, and true in the Japan version.

    good review

  • Agreed that would have made it even better NUTCRACKER Seriously that makes me laugh ever time I give my praise to Jaleco I don't think there is any other beat'em that lets you do a nut cracker move on a midget Gi warrin fighter.

  • LOL

He can crack my nuts if I had them to play that great game!

  • Um.......HELLO?

The so called screen you showed at the beginning for the original Rushing Beat is actually for Syura-your favorite of the series.

  • Jap games usually have better things then the US ones. We usually lose alot of things due to the ESRB ratings and such.. but anyways...

  • my point exactly.

  • Oozie Nelson=Nigger Douglas Bild
