Chiang Kai-shek lost support in mainland China because his gov't/army was corrupted, and he betrayed Sun Yet-Sen's vision of reform and democracy for China. Chiang didn't try to play identify politics? Before a school trip to Taipei, our teacher, a KMT party member not by choice, instructed us to speak "mandarin Chinese" in public over there so we can be seen as "educated". If we don't, then we are considered ghetto. Imagine you go to D.C, and you are asked to speak only English in public.

Taiwan provided a shelter for Chiang Kai-shek because he got his ass kicked and had no where to go. It's not Taiwan needed Chiang's protection from the communists. Taiwan got nothing to do with China's civil war, and has never been involved in any battle until Chiang came. The US at the time was determined to keep Taiwan off communist China's control. Chiang would not be where he was without US support, and the US could topple him from power if it wanted to.
