The link in the description say that the pilot forgot to lower the landing gear. Does anyone know if that is true? Either way, we are only human. I wish them the best of luck and God bless them for even getting it flying again in the first place. I hope they go on flying it and have nothing but safe flights from now on.
@JetMechMA its unlikely the pilot forgot to lower the landing gear. Its a key part of the landing checklist, I'm fully aware of pilot error, but forgetting to lower the landing gear is pretty huge! More like some sort of mechanical failure. :) hope this helps
It wasn't fixed yet...i actually saw the plane 2 weeks ago watching the guys who were fixing it. It's come a long way since it was first brought in...it's in good hands
FORGOT to lower the gear? I was really hoping the gear would not come down by no fault of his own but I guess everybody makes mistakes. Glad it all worked out in the end with nobody hurt and the airplane is in 1 piece.
I absolutely love this plane! I always worry when I see it(or any other one of a kind flyers)at EAA that it will be the last time for whatever reason, be it lack of parts or an accident like this. I'm glad he wasn't hurt and the Fury will fly another day.
A Fury Fan, your kind is rare! I too like that old Navy bird. I'm glad it will go on to fly but I too worry a bit when I see these old jets at air shows because you never know what will happen.
Well, Richard Sugden, who is the pilot and owner, forgot to lower the gear. The plane is being repaired and will soon fly again. Look it up on the web. Lots of info on it out there.
wow, what a good job by all. skilled piloting and as always rob knows how to handle any situation. i had no idea this even happened. i was there this year when kent shockley had his accident and its definetely and scary and surreal thing to witness no matter how small the incident is
How did the announcer know, before it happened, that 'he's gonna swing this airplane around'?? As if Rich had any real control when he was out of airspeed! Nice stop, and minimum damage = nice landing (we didn't see). Good job!
I remember this plane. We flew it at FSI in the 1970's on a Martin Marietta test project - Pershing missile radar tests in BAD weather. 45 deg dives. Radar captive on the wing. Ugly lead goo on left side to protect pilot. Plane came from VFW hall Litchfield AZ.
Wow, I was there for the Friday and Saturday show and I don't remember seeing this happen. I was probably off touring around and taking some pictures of the planes they had on display.
Those planes in the those years (1950's) weren't built with a 50 year life expectancy. Expecting old planes to fly at airshows and dazzle us is getting a little unrealistic and hazardous for pilots, unless we like watching pilots prove they can survive mishaps. Great pilot skills!! I would rather see a pristine bird in a museum than watch one get damaged. I'm begining to cringe when I hear "last one in flyable condition is in the air right over our heads.."
@sailordiver2007 Sir, age has little to do with it. Like any machine, if it is properly maintained it can go on flying for a very long time. Time = the amount of money you want to spend to keep it flying, that's all.
WTF! I was not expecting that ,I didnt know that the only flying Fury had an accident does anyone know what happend if so please leave me a message in my mailbox but man Steve I saw you posted a new video and when I saw it was of the Fury I got excited this was totaly unexpected but thats why your my idol man!
hey man are u here in pensacola right now? the dress rehersal is 2marra and night show tomrra nite and show is saturday ill be there lol i live across the bayou from the base so ive been watching the show practice and have been liking some of the planes that are here cant wait to see the p-51 fly

My grandfather flew those after WWII, he originally flew the F4U-Corsair. These are tough little planes! Nice landing, good head on his shoulders.

The most tire incident prone airport: NAS Pensacola
-F/A-18F blown tire on takeoff during air show.
-this FJ-4 Fury incident.
Professionally handled both times, great video here Steve!
