You may be confusing UK Garage and original US Garage.

US garage was basically vocal style house music that originated in New York and New Jersey ( centering on the Paradise Garage club - hence the name).

@ressla Yep. And also, something people keep missing, original UK garage was very similar in style to US garage, long before 2-Step hit the scene and was later called "UK garage". Then soon after the original UK garage sound started being known as "4/4 UK Garage" and pretty much died in the end.
