@megaLIONj i dont think its a software but you can get vocal line plugins... and this software is protools a pretty expensive program brother. i'd look at acid pro or its older version i'm still usings its cool edit pro 2.0 its pretty good if you watch the youtube tuturials then you'd catch on quick.

People are saying this is a gate effect but gate's use a threshold and decibel levels to control dynamic muting (opposite of a compressor). I believe the best name for this is a manually edited Tremolo effect.

@GiovanniDre A noise gate and a gate effect are not the same thing. Gating (the effect) is equivalent to a 100% volume modulation tremolo using a square wave.

Actually I just googled it, some noisegates have a sidechain! Look for noisegate plugins with sidechains (or hardware I guess)

you can't just double the vocals...you need to delay one of them by a few ms and/or do some parallel-compression and/or eq one track completely different, otherwise you will have some phase problems...

Sadly all these years on it likes to feel like a "comfortable tape-based recording replacement" rather than a rapid production tool.

But anyway, a gate triggered by MIDI would seem a smart way to add rhythmical stutters - hopefully someone else will know of a simple inline way to do this.

I'm going to agree with all the haters on this one. It's a gate effect, mute effect, volume, etc, and there are several ways to do it - the least preferred way is the one described in this tutorial, which also happens to be the most destructive (should you really have to create a backup copy an entire vocal track just to apply an effect?). And, you can't copy/paste it or apply the effect to multiple tracks, etc.

On the other hand, this tutorial is well produced and easy to follow. Good job.

@kreeper6 This is not a gate effect. A gate effect has a determined volume threshold value (set in dB) that if the audio signal falls below, it is muted completely from that channel. This is merely an example of muting volume to tempo, not setting a gate.

This guy got his alt and cntrl function keys mixed up... It's cntl m to mute regions in pc... Good rule of thumb when converting mac hot keys to pc hot keys... Cntrl on pc = cmd in mac, windows in pc = cntl in mac, and alt in pc = option/ alt in mac... Hope that makes since if not read your hot key manual you'll get it!

using a gate can replicate this effect, but this method is very fast to execute and provides for easy access to detailed changes, especially if you want to vary the length of the chops by small increments to create a more "Live" or "DJ" feel
