  • Lordy...get a hold of a woodsplitter for a few hours! What a load of buggering around.

  • Thanks for this video...someone was getting rid of 4 large stumps...after seeing your video I went after them and....they are on my fire wood pile!!!! I did one thing different...I used an 8 pound axe. It works better for me. I am about 6'4" and that size axe feels right. Thanks again man!!!

  • Rastafitte :)

  • GODAMN THAT GUY IS HUGE!.

He has to been doin this shit seince he was like 5 years old!

  • I just finished beating the shit out of some 10" ash which I cut down last week. I used a 8" maul and god damn some of those were tough. Do you dry ash before splitting it?

  • Nicely done, but if you split wood, be SURE to wear SAFETY GLASSES!

  • All you guys(?) recommending log splitters are a bunch of pussies!

Put some muscle on your feeble bony arms and do some real work for once, you might feel better. But then again you might put your back out or get a heart attack... so leave it to the rest of us. Bunch of wimps.

  • WoW! two people ended up in the hospital............

  • You are a better man then me!!

  • Dont hit two hammers together or you will end up in hospital like I did!

  • Dont hit two hammers together or you will end up in hospital like I did

  • All that firewood should last a while...

  • I use to do it that way , not the good ole days at all , now I use a hydrolic log splitter way better !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Save up gotta get one !

  • Nice way to lose an eye..

  • This is how firewood keeps the body warm twice. Preparation and then burning.

  • cut the wood into small peaces its easier

  • why is this on the internet?

  • Beginner going to start chopping wood soon. Mostly for firewood but for general usage. Any recommendations on tools? The more portable the better. Don't really want to go the old chainsaw route. :) Thanks.

  • By jove what an absolutely brilliant chap!

  • I'm trying to spit the remains of a big maple tree, some parts are such a pain in the ass, this guy makes it look way to easy.

  • rednecks got hair like a fuck'n girl.

  • Just let your soul glow!

  • what kind of wood is it is it pine

  • It was a big old ash tree. I use a "wood grenade" now. Goes much faster that way.

  • dude ud be dam strong if u choped every pice in the pile :)

  • Thats great and all but i see no axe anywhere ?

  • dumb twat how can u not se it

  • Open your eyes prickweasel, all that I see is a maul and a sledgehammer, unless you think a maul or a sledgehammer is an axe.. "example" If you hit that wood on the end grain with an axe it would get stuck really bad hence using a maul like the man in this video would be proper for splitting wood..

  • Looks like a splitting maul and a sledge to me, not an axe anywhere, I am gonna go with 777dmith7777 on this one.

  • He is a purist and thinks a maul doesn't qualify.......He also has probably never split ash wood.....

  • @7777dmith7777 at the very begining he hits the log then hits the axe wih the hammer

  • Man, that's one hell of a pile of firewood. Makes my shoulders hurt just looking at it. : )

  • wow, the last one seems to be very hard

  • Here's a few hints. Instead of using the sledge to hit the maul, pick up the piece of wood with the maul and flip it over on the way down and use the force of the wood to split itself on the maul. Using that tool steel on tool steel is a good way to lose an eye.

I know all this because until I was 18, I though my name was get wood.

    A Canadian Logger

  • ...looks like your gonna be there a while.

  • There is an easier way than a wedge. For the ones that bounce back, give your axe about an eighth of a twist on the way down. It will pop them right apart

  • we did piles of wood like you have got 20 odd years ago [same method] if only we had known about log spliters then ! was not many about in uk at that time sure would have saved some gravy .

  • that's how it's done. some times I split wood like that just to be doing something. something about iot just make's me feel good.. hard work and sweat are their own reward.

  • Whahaha what a dumb

  • that looks real great til you hit it wrong and get smacked in the face with the axe handle. just buy a wedge...

  • sharpen that maul bro looks kinda dull

  • looks like somebody needs to sharpen his maul

  • a maul does not need to be sharp..go to the hardware store, you will see none of them have a edge..

  • your doing things the hard way, first ofall you should save urelf the energy and cut the pieces smaller, then u should save urself the efor and buy an acual log splitter

  • alot of us don't have the money to buy a log splitter.

plus they're slow. i can split twice as much wood in an a hour compared to a log splitter. sure it's easy, but it's slow and costly.

  • you have no ideal how many people will not think that is true... mostly ones who don't split wood. red necks in MaryLand? well I never knew..lol

  • Well I shall not lie to anyone, I couldn't split wood with an axe nor a splitting mall now as I am way to old and in not the best of physical shape any longer but back in the day I gave it a round but in all honestly I wound up beating the hell out of the wood without splitting much :) Now give me a couple good old school wedges and a sledge hammer and I could split it like mad. As for the wood splitters being slow, look here on youtube for firewood processors, DAMNNNNN!!!!! Some are FAST!!!!!

  • I use a 10 pound sledge hammer and wood grenade now. It's so much easier.

  • You choppa lotta wooda.

  • i only like to cut small pieces so i dont have to deal with this and if i cut big pieces i just use a fucking chainsaw

  • why so much wood?!?!?!?!?!

  • The only reason i can think is that a home is going to be built in that location.

  • i have splitting wood fro like 5 years and i fine the best way to split big logs is to let it dry and then use weges and axe to split it

  • i like hatchets and axes WAY more than chainsaws... they're too annoying, especially if you are trying to sleep and your neighbor's using a chainsaw. ans plus, its the old school way =)

  • That's the typical response of someone who has no ground to stand on. All you are able to do is talk trash about all my accomplishments, whereas someone who was worth anything would actually show it. I bet it's tough being you; a total nobody. Perhaps you shouldn't be talking trash to people on YouTube who are accomplished just because you are not. Might come back to bite you in the butt like it did here.

  • I've shown the world who I am. You've hidden behind your blank profile. It's pretty obvious who the bigger man is here. You're probably some 12-year-old punk anyway. You have everything to prove and no means of doing it. If you were a real man you would nut up and meet me in person, or at least post a video of your self. After all, this is YouTube.

  • Rightly said.

  • Why don't you upload a video showing us how it's done...

  • Oh, I hope I didn't make you cry. All I want is a video from you proving how badass you are. I'm sorry if you can't keep up with my "community college," I mean, Doctoral education. I'm sure you don't even know what a Doctoral degree is. It's the one that permits you to put a "Dr." in front of your name. You would have learned that in high school if you would have stayed in it.

  • You must not be able to read very well. I went to university in Vienna for a year. I got a 4.0 there. Vienna isn't out of state, it's out of country. And just to clear up any confusion you are having, Vienna is in Austria, not to be confused with Australia; the place where kangaroos live. Where is your college? Where is your website? Where are your YouTube videos? That's right you have none of those...

  • Sir if you will split those big logs from like 2 to 3 inches from the outside they will split and make the log smaller then the rest will split easier.Thats the reason i don't like huge logs more work that they are worth in some causes i didn't say all...I use a splitting maul and have never seem use of a wedge.I understand they can split the stubborn logs i bet they do..

  • That was the most ridiculous video I have seen in a long time. Although that was crap wood, you have a lot of learning to do. I give you an A for effort though my friend.

  • yes i would agree or a tree stump

  • I use a 12 pound all metal maul, the best way I have found is to split on a concrete slab, then all the force goes into the log and not into the ground, on straighter grained stuff I can maintain a faster splitting rate than the hydraulic splitter. I give up on the crooked stuff though. The only bad thing is the maul quickly gets rounded on the top corner and the concrete gets beat up.

  • dude you killed the forest

  • Hey I watched your splitting technique. I have 25 years of wood splitting experience and I must tell you that you should never hit a maul with a sledgehammer or another maul. It is very dangerous and it damages the maul. You should be using wedges with a sledge. Also-not all mauls are the same. I have tried every kind and the best seems to be a 6 or 8 lb maul with a severely angled head, but not like those triangular-shaped mauls which are no good.

  • hey i been splitting wood fro a few years and i splitting alot of really big place they much easy to split when it dry then green

  • lol you talk like a lumber jack

  • Ever have a problem of your axe head slipping off fiberglass handles?

  • Come to think of it, I only remember having that problem with wooden axes. Of the two fiberglass axes I've purchased, neither has failed yet. Eventually, the axe head will break off. The handle takes a beating near the head often, and the rubber guards just break off after a short while. I bought the second axe as a backup after the first one started looking beat up. Now they both look just as worn next to the axe head.

  • The head on my fiberglass axe slipped off about 3/8 to a half of an inch. I pounded it back down but I'm debating how to keep it on now. Those little metal wedge things you would pound into a wood axe might not do the trick. My handles before the head are alright. I'm thinking about drilling a hole and putting a bolt or something in it and welding it on both sides then grinding it smooth on the sides of the axe.

  • I bet drilling a bunch of sheet rock screws into the end would do the trick.

  • Thats a lot of wood. I do pretty well at figuring which one to use an axe or a maul but never thought of my maul stuck and hittin it with a sledge I usually just try to get it out. Thanks. You should be happy this is the one new thing I learned today.

  • Axes are for chopping, not splitting. Invest $20 into a 8lb splitting maul.

  • He is using a splitting maul in this video. It's just a little green.

  • ever try hitting the edges first? if you do it right your 4th hit will give you 4 wedges. cool old trick my friend showed me. he calls it a pro split. that wood sounds pretty fresh! hope you didn't pull a muscle!

  • Thanks! I will try that once these dry a little more.

  • Welcome. If I see a crack in the wood I will line it up with the edge of the maul. I first hit the edge farthest away from me, then closest to me. then I either rotate the wood or if it is large move to the side and do the same thing. This cross pattern works great. the maul should hit at the edge of the wood to start it. you will be surprised how easy it makes splitting!
