we were about to give these newcomers preferential treatment in our own land over the country's own sons; they were to be put into posts liberated by the young men who went off to war, and at the price of 'joining-up' themselves they could even acquire British citizenship but the condition of that 'joining-up', set out in black and white, was that they never should be sent to the front!
