Technically, you're right. But Special defense and special attack were combined into a single stat, Special.

Yeah. But as you can imagine, it made some things vastly overpowered. Both Chancey and Alakazam were ultimate special attackers AND ultimate special walls in RBY.

@chenmaster2 It is much easier in Red/Blue/Yellow than you think, it just requires more thought than just mindlessly spamming attack moves (you don't even require special/Fighting moves for Brock, just strategy and a few Potions)

In Gen II, the stats actually weren't completely split apart as well, since they wanted to maintain compatibility with Gen I, thus, the two stats shared their IV and stat experience. Then, in Gen III, they revised the data structure and actually split the two stats completely.
