  • Awesome vid. I was gonna say, def not York 30 because it's an airport. WOuld be awesome to drive down it like that. Awesome vid. Faved.

  • My dad used to work there . It closed in the late 70s, I think 79 because of noise pollution, from alcohole cars running during the week day's . People in a near by subdivision started a potition to shut it down . It would still be open if they would not have run the louder cars on Wedsday, and Thursday's .

  • The reason US 30 closed, Was told to me by my then girlfriend, Who lived just east of Clay street, Where US 30 was located. US30 started bringing jet engine racing vehicals to the strip. When this happened, Clay street would have to be closed, Due to the jet trail and heat blowing across Clay street. That, coupled with the fact that fighter jet engines were LOUD as all hell. The residents complained to the county, and were able to get the drag strip closed.

    so i was told........

  • Very cool vid & radio station clip. Would suggest a vintage garage band song to start it though. To me Metallica is not a good fit at all.

  • I remember bowling at Stardust lanes on US 30 on Saturdaysin the 1970;s and when league bowling was done we could hear the "The Great Ones Run... Run... Run!" I never got to go there for races.

  • could you tell me wat rd it is off of. im doing a documentery of the old dragstrip an would like to visit it to take some pics. thanks

  • the track is close becoase it was to loud for the farmers that live by it

  • silly

  • The track was closed due to the noise level in and around the neighborhood. I lived in Valpo and remember hearing them from my backyard on Friday and Saturday nights when I wasn't there. The proponents of keeping the strip open argued the position the strip was there before the houses were but to no avail. It was a well kept, well run operation, as they were on the NHRA circut. None the less it's a shame it's gone. A real piece of Region and Chicagoland pop culture history.

  • you could make a lot of money there.betting in the south stands was not for the faint of heart. but good times

  • Any old timers here remember the cars "No Big Thang" and Dragon Wagon" that raced there? :-)

  • @starguard Yea, I remember "No Big Thing". I used to live across the street from the guy who owned the car, George Brugos. I used to help him load the Vespa onto the trailer and we would go to the strip(U S 30) Pretty cool stuff when your only 13 years old.(1969). I wish I could go back and do it a million more times!

  • It was a great track I raced there many times in the 70's. Winston Carter and I called

    Strange Engine Service

  • so why did it close in the first place good thing that isnt around were i live we race it the way it is lol

  • well, im only 16 but from what i heard in the late 70's early 80s it got real run down and nasty. noone would race there....

  • its a shame because looks like a cool place me and my buddies would be using it as a test tune place if we lived there we run a drag strip called rock falls raceway

  • @eltatertoto it was because of noise complaints. The had small drag meets there about every weekend. the nhra only can once a year

  • @eltatertoto i think it closed due to noise complaints. because they used jet cars or something.

  • yeah its a fun place to sneak on and take a run down. just those bushes are a pain lol. im thinkin we need to find the owner and have a reunion on the track

  • im pretty sure its owned by the realestate agent... i know, that because they put a neighborhood at the end of the track that there cant be any loud noises anymore. its zoned residencial now.....

i usually just go dowh the gravel road, thats attached to the parking lot, it goes to the middle of the track.

  • @BOOBHUNTER151 With all the cracks with grass and weeds growing through the track, it would be very unsafe to drag race on it in with the track in current condition. Track needs to be repaved to make safe.We have a local drag strip and owners let neighbors of the track come to the races free of charge so they don't complain. Thats what then owners of US 30 track should have done.

  • Hello,

I wanted to say thanks for the video, and I wanted to add that my Dad raced many cars there over the years. In fact I spent all day yesterday trying to fix the side of his Camaro, damaged when he lost off the line of old US 30

    MDG

  • Man, that does bring back the memories of my teenage years listening to the commercials on WLS radio.

  • Was this the same track as US 30 in York, PA? That track was an poerating airport as well as a drag strip. The track in the clip, isn't the same one or is it?

  • nope this one is the old us30 drag strip in hobart, indiana. the birthplace of sunday sunday sunday lol

  • The US30 track in York Pa is now the York (County) Airport

  • i wish they coulda reopened it

  • yeah it sucks. they put a neighborhood at the end of the strip so thats why they couldnt re-open it...

  • thanks for posting...here's to the memories.... what a shame this great place is closed.

  • yeah i read it was closed forever because of zoning issues. they tried to re open it in 2005 but were unsucessful due to zoning. check my vids in spring. im going back on somthing a bit faster :)
