what a lost, this woman could really sing , now she singing with the angles gone way to soon, i love this song when this came out i was just a kid.. she will never be really gone as long as her music is still around..........
BLACK RADIO AND EVEN WHITE RADIO HAD A LOT OF RESPECT FOR TINA BECAUSE SHE DID IT RIGHT. SHE WAS AND STILL IS PLAYED AT RADIO EVERYWHERE TODAY. LOVE YOU TINA..A LEGEND FOREVER.
Teena had an authentic and humble soul that brought us all together under her funky groove. May her legacy live on and her spirit of love be shared with future generations.
Only a complete fool would even think of race instead of letting the music and soul of the performer stand on their own merit. Goes to show how people can have narrow minds,
I had the pleasure of seeing Teena Marie live back in 1997 at the House of Blues in Hollywood on the sunset strip and let me tell you that she brought the house down! I have seen well over 100 different artists in concert and Lady T in a intimate setting like the House of blues was by far one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. Rick James had just gotten out of jail and made a surprise, unannounced appearance to sing fire and desire with her. God Bless you Lady T
@iolanik I went to the Budwieser Superfest in DC to see her back in I wanna say in either 89 or 90, I can't remember wich, but for some reason she didn't show. It was the only chance I got to see her and she didn't show. I was so dissappointed but she is still my favorite female artist. God Bless you Lady T. I love you baby. RIP.
I've been trippin over this song over the last 3 days. I've listened to it 1000 times or more, yet I've really been "hearing" it since Tee's death. This is a complex song. You've got 3, maybe even 4 hooks going on, and the whole thing is like pure dessert. She just keeps taking you higher and higher, and that chord shift at the end - BLAM! Plus, it ain't disco, it's deceptive...but it's pure funk! Check out the bass, rhythm guitar, and congas. magical!
She never appeared on Tonight Show, SNL, or Letterman or any talk show (except The View recently) but made nine appearances on Soul Train. Most of any white performer. Also the first white woman. Cant get blacker than that and still be white.
Got this song stuck in my head all over again by watching this clip over the weekend. :D Imagine dancing at Soul Train when this was new. WOW! I wish!
What is up with all the white and black talk, all of you sound ignorant. Teena Marie was a white woman with nothing black trapped inside. She was a person who was real to what she liked, and that transcends race or culture.
She wasn't a white woman. She wasn't the "Ivory" Queen of Soul. She wasn't the original Blue Eyed Soul. I have heard her called many things. To Me, she was Teena Marie, a woman that God gave a voice to sing, and oooo, she sang and loved for 30 YEARS! If you asked her what color she was, she would say, listen to Deja Vu! I miss you Teena. You will always be my girl. Rest Baby. Your work on earth is done. And God, did you do it!!!
this was awkward..shes obviously lip syncing and over compensating her moves ..also most live performances you watch the artist..and here they just dance around like its record..and she cant connect with anyone ...
This is where I first saw Teena. Me and someone (a male) was debating "What is she?" My girlfriend (or wife) at that time angrily replied "Can't y'all see that's a white women?" No, we didn't know, but what we did know was she was funky and fine!
@fusionarena Can I respectfully disagree with you? Soul is not restricted to only black people. She was full of soul and nobody could match her then and nobody ever will. You can be any color and have soul. R.I.P. Lady T
@Sunnshyneone soul is subjective and you cant really pin it to a certain sound either. i mean you cnt pin it. soul is universal and people express it different. back then it was rare for a white person to sing like teena.
A true soul sista!!

Race does not mean anything to me. Did not mean anything to her, that is why her music is timeless, amazing. natural, beautiful, soulful.
We Americans are so hung up on Race. Who gives a damm about that.
Much love Lady T:))

still we didn't know and didn't care she had an soulful voice anyway.
