This is a very good tutorial. The biggest reason to shoot horizontal panos with the camera vertical (and vice versa) is to keep the resolution as high as possible. At least that's why I do it.

I usually shoot panoramas by hand and I have great results. Does it help that much to shoot on a tripod? I am sure I get a lot more distortion, but it is very hard to see.
