Thomas Newman is already in the Hall of Fame for Soundtracks isn't he? He is adept at nurturing a film's overall depth. Continually jaw dropping in its simplicity as it grabs hold of our gut, gently squeezing out a pure appreciation for the moment.

I saw this move for the first time about a month ago, and, wow...what a surpirse...very well written, and the soundtrack by Thomas Newman fit the movie perfectly! This Director also did "Risky Business"...and this was his last movie.

In short, I believe very strongly that someone or some group over at Warner does/did not like this movie at all, for whatever reason(s), and is pleased that they possess the rights to it. And if this is the case, we will probably not see the movie out on DVD for a while. At least this is my current hypothosis. I hope that I am wrong, though.

I have no idea why this great movie has not yet been released on DVD in all these years. It's a real crime. I wonder what the problem is; why Warner Brothers won't release it. I just recently ordered it on VHS, and I noticed that Warner Bros. categorizes the movie as a "comedy." I also noticed that the summary on the backside of the VHS cover was crudely put together. All this makes me wonder who over at Warner dislikes single mothers or single-mother families, etc.

I love this film. It touches me deeply for some reason--perhaps it has to do with the father aspect, which has personal meaning to me, or the moving performances. The deeply affecting score by Thomas Newman doesn't hurt either.:) It's baffling that this is still unavailable on DVD.

This movie makes me cry everytime I catch it on HBO. Great movie. I wish someone would put it on here so we could see it again. I love the music in the scene when the two children are stealing the VCR's. Is any of the music in the movie produced by Tangerine Dream? Thanks for sharing this montage.

indeed american beauty was better. i was in no way saying that men dont leave was better at all. i just think it is possible that alan ball used this as a reference to point his own theory in a different direction. i just really dig somber films with great music scores. the straight story is one of my favz.
