  • if i will own white star line i would by her and that would be my first order

  • if i was rich i would save her and let the queen mary sail for ever.

  • i wil do what ever i can do to make her sail..it woud be so great to sea and she is in good con so it wouden be imposssibel

  • the problem for mary is that eventhough you'd be able to restore her, give her new steam engines or more feasibly give her new diesels, get her to dry dock and replace everything below the wateline, you will never get her inline with current legislation she will never be able to pass isgott2010 requirements it has killed many classic and much more beutifull liners at the beach of alang and other places....

  • Well my night on the Queen Mary has come and gone. The old girl certainly looks better then she did twenty years ago. They did an awsome job with her teak decks. But there were areas of the ship that were desperate for a paint job. Too bad the City of Long Beach doesnt use all the rent money they collect from her for her ongoing restoration. After all they bought her. I wonder how the rest of the city owned buildings are kept?

  • anything is possibale can the QUEEN MARY SAIL AGAIN SURE SHE COULD all it takes is someone with ALOT OF LOVE FOR HER AND ALOT OF MONEY,,,anything is possibale,,

  • My family and I LOVE the Queen Mary, she is a lady even today with all her glory and class. We've stayed aboard many times and still always want to go back. She is a wonderful ship. We are LUCKY that we can spend the night there anytime we wish.

  • Leaving Vancouver on Sept 25 on the Golden Princess heading for LA. Then spending a night on the Queen. Can't wait!!!!

  • she is butiful but she may not cause of serton things i love her!

  • titanic 2

  • Thank God they didn't just sell her to the ship breakers to be broken up for salvage.

  • Too bad the rudder is welded to the ship and can't move.

  • plus, the rudder is welded, so that it couldn't move

  • Great videos Akosilolo!

    Tell Switzerland I said "Hello!"

  • Brilliant video chap! Brought a tear to my eyes! Many thanks for sharing.

    Chris Wallace

  • @waysidetavern Thank you very much, Chris. Have a look at my other Queen Mary video's too, if you like. Greetings from Switzerland. Akosilolo

  • 2:40 looks like the part in Annie when the QM was leaving from NYC to London!

  • If only the olympic and maurentainia were not scrapped, they could be sitting in the water as hotels as well

  • I like the idea of refitting the queen mary with new engines. But they would also have to re-do the propeller shafts and the mechanisms for the rudder. Perhaps building a replica would be just as cheap. Taking it a step further, I think what they should 'really' do is make a replica of the Aquitania. This is because the Aquitania looks older. That way, more people would want to buy tickets.

  • she is never gona sail again, sorry but its true

  • Why won't they let Mary sail again?

  • can the Queen Mary ever sail again YES IT CAN HAPPEN ALL IT TAKES IS SOME ONE WITH ALOT OF LOVE FOR THE QUEEN MARY AND THAT SOMEONE WITH ALOT OF MONEY!! anything is possibale it just takes LOTS OF LOVE FOR HER AND LOTS OF MONEY,,,BUT ANY THING IS POSSIBALE,,

  • why the hell did they cut her engines in half? & replace rather than refurbish the stacks?

  • queen mary can sail again all it takes is alot of LOVE AND A LOT OF MONEY but it is possibale SHE CAN SAIL AGAIN,,,only if one has the money and the LOVE,,,for her,,,

  • What people need to realize is Cunard agreed to sell the Queen Mary to Long Beach as long as they vow not to restore her and use her as competition. So even if Long Beach wanted to restore her. They can't. Otherwise Cunard will demand that it be back in Long Beach or they will demand her back. So it's Queen Mary locked up in Long Beach. Or no Queen Mary at all.

  • It would probably cost wayyyyy to much money to restore her and operate her and who would operate her, shes better staying where she is instead so she doesnt have the risk of being a part of a soda can and the ship we should focus on is the RMS QE2

  • My father was the Superintendent in charge of the conversion of the RMS in to a hotel while she was in dry dock in Long Beach at the Naval Shipyard. I love going back to visit as she is like a second home and how wonderful to see so many people care about her future as I do.

  • I think it's a great idea but what about the engines I heard the scraped them??

  • ANY ONE WHO SAY IT IS IMPOSSIBLE JUST DREAM OK SO WHAT IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE COSTLY BUT IF YOU JUST DREAM YOU WOULD BE SUPPRISED WHERE IT CAN GET YOU ALL SHE NEEDS ARE A FEW TOUCH UPS AND SHE IS READY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!

  • As much as I would love to see her as a cruis ship again. I doubt that its possible. So much has chaned since she was brought in in 1967. Her hull is not as strong as it was then. her decks are not as durable as they once were.

  • Years ago, oh about 1975, I once asked a girl who worked in the Wax Museum, when it was on board the queen mary, if they would ever reift her as a cruise vessel again and she said, that isnt possible because it would cost more to refit her than it would to build new one. The engines have been cut in half and are totaly inoperable. one propeller is sitting on display in the oarking lot, and the stacks are not even real. the aoriginals were replaced with fake ones.

  • @Sarasdad91 Thank you for the nice comments!

  • @Sarasdad91 What could be done is outfit her with 2 of the

new high efficiency diesel engines they make for cruise ships,

such as Oasis Of The Sea. Remove the inner 2 shafts and

use only the outer 2 props. Queen Mary wouldn't have the

speed she used to at 210,000 horsepower with her original

turbines, but she could cruise the world on fuel-efficient

new engines and retain her classic look. The old liners

were built for high seas & rough weather, so she could

    even cruise the South Pole!

  • @4freespeech Perhaps. But there is always the hull integreity in question. She has been sitting there in port of long beach since 1967. That is a long time to weaken the hull. The engines you refere to would work, probably better than the her originals. But they might have to competely refit the hull, in any case she would be in dry dock for a period of time.. I myself would love to see the SS United States totaly refit instead of wasting away in Philadelphia.

  • @Sarasdad91 the funnels are fake? why would the do that

  • @sanderrodijk Less maintenance less cost

  • The ship is structurally shot and has been modified so much that it could not be converted back to active use for anything. No engines, no boilers, much of the interior is either reworked or gone, and the money would be better spent building something else. The ship was found to be dangerously unstable after the conversion was done so the ballast tanks were filled with concrete.

  • Queen Mary was the Greatest Liner of all time. But now her sail days are over, & besides Long Beach promise Cunard that she won't sail again, ever. We must accept it as reality

  • You're right, SuperTitanicfreak. In the meantime I also realized that she will never sail again. However, it is still possible to dream and at least we can see her in Long Beach and walk on her decks.

  • @SuperTitanicfreak Well, enough money to the pocket of Cunard Line boss and surely RMS Queen MAry can be bought and then it can be repaired. Only one thing matters here: it's money. And I bet that there's a rich guy or lady willing the restore The RMS Queen Mary to her former glory. So we need to find that guy or lady. :-)

  • @ARSA525 If I had the money and as much as I would love to see the QM sail again, I would first restore the SS United States to her fomrer glory.

  • @Sarasdad91 What about the three Olympic class siters then? The Olympic, Titanic and Britannic?

  • I think that restoring RMS Queen Mary to her former glory is possible. Not impossible in any way. There's a lot of buildings and ships that were in far worse condition and they have managed to be rebuilt. It's just a matter of motivation and money. So we need to find folks who have money and motivation to restore her and I know that isn't easy, but possible it still is!

  • @SuperTitanicfreak Well if they never made the promise, Queen Mary could have sailed again. I heard they removed the engines and boilers. If they can remove them, then they can replace them with new ones. But sadly, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth were one of the last ships to use steam. I think after that they didn't make those kinds of engines anymore. But really the Queen Elizabeth 2 was the last ship to use steam. I think they didn't have time to replace the engines anyway because the would..

  • @nickelfilling1 not be making steam engines anymore. After writing this comment, SuperTitanicfreak and akosilolo, I think you're right she will never sail again.

  • You can dream and then there's reality: The Queen wasn't air conditioned, as was so pointedly made clear on its last cruise. It is gorgeous, but it's not the sort of ship people want to sail, it hasn't the amenities, nor the stateroom space. What it could do is be moved across the bay to downtown Long Beach, as was suggested when the pier-like convention center was built. That does require imagination and Long Beach is desperately short of that, hence the condition of this grand queen.

  • She would be a beautiful sight back at sea and it is technically not impossible however from my involvement around steam locomotive restorations I can tell you a lot of the old steamers that are sitting around that we would love to see back in operation but no one would touch them because of the cost involved and granted they are a lot smaller that the queen Mary and have more of their original equipment in tact so logically I don't see it happening. and it's very sad but it could be worse!

  • I've spent many nights aboard the QM. My high school prom was held aboard, as was my brother's wedding. I've carried a clipboard and looked as if I was supposed to be in many parts of the ship I wasn't supposed to be in, from top to bottom. The engines are gone and it's prohibitively expensive to make her seaworthy. Her existence has been much better than many other liners, including her sister Queen Elizabeth, AKA Seawise University. Let her enjoy her retirement and adoration.

  • I read somewhere that the Mary needs a hundred million bucks for restoration work. If this is true she must need alot of work done to her.

  • Well, she is eventually going to have to be drydocked for hull repairs.Or she will end up like the uss texas, all full of rust holes

  • She was a great ship, and I would be thrilled if she sailed again. However I think it isn't that possible because of all the money and time.

Steam engines are in incredibly scarce production, and moving this thing around these days seems rather difficult. She's old, classic style. Hardly anyone can sail a classic ship anymore with all this new technology they have in ships.

  • great video my friend thumbs up

  • I have also entertained the idea that the ship should sail again. However, it required a gallon of bunker oil to move the Queen through 7 feet of water. Ships today are powered by more fuel efficient turbine (jet) engines turning power-generation equipment. The same engine types that power aircraft are used for modern ships.

  • Its a nice dream, but I think the SS United States might have a better chance than the ol QM. They knocked out her lower bulkheads when they removed the boilers and forward engine room, compromising her structural integrity and making her top heavy. Also, the skills required to refit a ship of her vintage have really been lost to history, and the cost would be phenomenal. As she is, she serves as an ambassador to her kind, and a splendid example of 20th century shipbuilding. Long may she reign.

  • @Shipwright1918 I agree. She has been 'gutted' basically. And I agree that she serves as an Ambassador to her kind, and history. She served her time. Let the Queen rest. She, more than most ships, has earned it, and we Love her too much to see her sail away from home here in SoCal =-)

  • she should sail again she is the last true steam ship left and should'nt be left to rot

  • Steam power plants are just too expensive to maintain. How about a couple of diesels and maybe a gas turbine or two. And for stability lay some lead bricks in the bilge and hope they don't fall through. She is still beautiful.

  • Dream big? We have new liners, bigger than any ever considered before. Sadly, they're uglier than anything ever floated since Noahs Ark landed with all that manure aboard, but what can you say? Refloating the Queen Mary isn't a dream, it's an idiot's idea. A good dream would be to get all those kids in art and designer schools into the worlds companies where the decisions are made to produce the ugly cars, trains, buses, and ocean liners we have today, and have them design something nice.

  • What's wrong with Queen Mary where she is. Besides Long beach promised Cunard that Queen Mary will never sailed again.

  • I was thee in 67 when they brought into the port of Long Beach. When I was 12 and the RTD was only 10 cents to ride, I used to take the bus from South Gate to see her every weekend. At that time there was a Wax Museum on board. What I would give to go back.

  • @akosilolo thats the problem with a lot of people, they refuse to dream, i say when you dream, dream big, i would love to see queen mary steam up again. i am a steam buff in general and am helping to restore western maryland 202 (steam train) and guess what else, me and my buddies are building a small railroad, something impossible without dreaming big, so dont be downed when told your dreaming too big, there just not as imaginative

  • @mrnickelplate, thank you very much for the nice comment! You're right, we should always have dreams, it's a part of our life. It must be great to restore a steam train and I wish, I had a chance to see the small railroad. Wish you luck! Thanks again for your support and your comment.

  • @akosilolo I would love to see her sail but it most likely cant happens. She's been sitting in Los angeles for MANY years. They would have to do soooooo much work if she would ever to sail again. I'm sure Cunard wouldn't want to pay for that either but it would be magical if she ever sailed again.

  • @mrnickelplate I agree your not alone! I love this ship as her predecessors Mauretania, Aqautania, Lusitania..and white star's 3 Titanic, Olympic and Brittanic...Todays' ships just don't cut it as far as nice lines...Too bad only the Queen Mary survives...although the SS United states lays wasting away somewhere as well... i think in turkey

  • @RFKFANTS67 SS United States is in Philadelphia and her hull was tested and shows that it retains nearly 90% integrity--it was shown to cost about $500 million to bring her back to sea and there have been some considerations but it is unfeasible in todays economy..but shes prettier than what passes for cruise ships nowadays..top heavy, slow and gaudy looking ships yuck!!

  • @cdamauser1963 Trouble with the United States is she was

gutted back in the 70's. All the asbestos was removed and her

fittings were scabbed up and sold off in thrift stores all over

Virginia where she was built, (Newport News). The turbines

on the United States were 250,000+ horsepower and used a

prodigious amount of fuel oil; like 20,000 gallons PER DAY!

She was designed as a possible warship, accounting

for her "ticky tacky" interior made of metal. She's beyond

    help now, I'm afraid.

  • @4freespeech Yes, I stated that I had heard $500Million to get her back in shape but with the unforseens it would probably be close to $1Billion--she could benefit from some fuel efficient diesels but she'd probably never hit 35Knots again! I just cant stand the sight of most of the new "cruise" ships...way to gaudy, low freeboard--dangerously top heavy with not enough under the waterline--I'd feel unsafe on anything other than say the Queen Mary2

  • @cdamauser1963 QM2 is the most beautifull ship at this time, but i still prefered the old ones! xD

  • Oh! I didnt know thyey had torn out her engines. What vandalism. I remember when she left Southampton for the last time - flags flying and brass bands playing and crowds sobbing and waving handkerchiefs I always thought it was better that she went to California as a museum piece rather than being broken up. But that they have ripped her heart out is just devastating.

  • Yes they took out the boilers BUT to my knowledge i believe most of the aft engine is still in her

  • yes they need to let it sail it has survive icebergs and torpedoes its good it had a rest but it should let it sail

  • Operafan I found it go to your search page and type in queen mary Vs Titanic,,,very instresting information,,,but at the left of the screen is a short video of them working on the queen mary,,,enjoy it!! I tryed to print off this page but the lettering is so small I dont know how to print it off to where it is readable,,I looked into the text size and that didnt do any good,,

  • operafan I was on the queen mary not more than 3 monthes ago YES THEY ARE WORKING ON HER pictures are off the wall and things were being covered up,,,they are restoring her but it will take some time,,,I have seen a video of her being restored,,,I will find the web sight again,,,

  • If the hull can be repaired then the ship can be ballasted to compensate for the removed machinery its not that hard and thanks to the City of Long Beach for preserving this great British ship, just remember we cut all our other great ships up and converted them into razor blades.

  • they havent repaired her since who knows when. 0preafan is right she was desighned for transportation across the atlantic. and now that her engines are ripped out she its lucky that she doesn't capsize while she is docked. she weights too much on her upper decks and she weight nothing on her engine room or anywhere else below the passenger decks. she cant even be fully repaired now. and if she gets towed back to england she'll probably capsize or sink

  • There are pictures on the internate and some posted in you tube video's. Where the Queen Mary is being pushed with tug boats. And the propeller box is clearly visible. So she can be moved. But out of the safety of the sheltered waters of the harbour is another story.

  • Operafan dont get me wrong Iam greatful that the City of Long Beach bought the Queen Mary. But Iam also sad that she is being neglected in the upkeep of her hull. I wish the US Coast Guard would revoke the Queen Marys floating building status. And force the City of Long Beach to take our beloved Queen to drydock before its too late.

  • The removal of her engines and heavy machinery in the 1960s conversion has likely made her too top heavy and unstable to be moved "anywhere". Even moving her for dry docking could result in her capsizing.

  • i feel the same way. every time i see her shes just raring to sail ,just wanting to sail soo bad shes still such a beautiful ship

  • She was designed to transport people across the Atlantic. She was not designed as a "cruise ship". When people started using airplanes for transportation across the Atlantic, they stopped sailing on her. Cunard had to sell her. Long Beach bought her and regardless of how anyone feels about her resting place, she is the only one of her kind left ~ and this is because LONG BEACH has taken responsibility for her and though she isn't profiting ~ they have not sold her for scrap.

  • the queen mary should be in england..... and so should the queen elizabeth 2..... i dont get y we have the queen mary and england has nothing but its too late now cuz her cunditions are too bad and we dont need another disaster at sea

  • im not insaulting her im saying if she ever sails again she'll be lucky if she doesn't capsize........ and sooner or later shes gonna rot

  • yet as the complaints of her condition are pouring in all over YouTube video comments, I'd like to know how many people who are "disturbed" by her weathered condition enough to insult her all over the internet are annual members and contribute to her restoration?? I stay on this beautiful Queen every single year and every year, there's been restoration/improvements in progress. Her condition is NOTHING like the SS United States. She is beloved by many who put their money were their mouths are!

  • The city of Long Beach will probably do nothing about the Marys rusting lower hull plates. Until she sinks at her berth. Cant wait until the lawsuits are filed against the city. Hotel guests will think they have won the City of Long Beach lottery. Its only a matter of time. The clock is ticking.

  • she isnt stable enogh to sail again......... i dought that the USA is gonna waste there money on something not that important.......if she ever sailed again then wut would she do? eventually ppl arent gonna wanna sail on her again.... thats y they docked her in long beach.... shes been sitting there for years shes not stable, her engine room is rotting away we'll be lucky if she doesn't capsize if we let her sail again....... she'll probably end up like the ss united states, rotting in a dock

  • Quite right. And even if there was a slght chance of her sailing again she most likely would not hold up...and we really don't need or want another "Seawise" disaster!

  • Financially, and in practice, impossible. The QM is not physically stable enough even to be towed back to Britain. I love going there each year to stay on her as a hotel guest and I feel she should stay in Long Beach. Why? There are ongoing repairs to the decks and lifeboats etc. Should this ship ever be returned to us in the UK there would be 2 months of celebration then she would most likely be left to rot - "because we have run out of money".

  • RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 don't belong in Long Beach and Dubai. They belong in Britain. They would be amazing tourist destinations. To give away these symbols of British history is a disgrace. People today may not understand how vitally important the great ocean liners were to world history, but they should.

  • Britain should've kept this ship along with the QE and QE2, Why should this ship be in the USA and the QE2 in Dubai.. We don't build ships like these anymore, hey lets give away everything else too, like Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Range Rover, Mini, Lotus, Tvr, etc etc.

What do we make now worth mentioning.......... Nothing.

  • It would be wonderful, but is unfortunately impossible. Although it would be nice if she was restored to her former glory.

  • Unfortuantely, she can never sail again. Her keel was filled with cement and condition of her sail from Cunard was that she never sail again. She would also never meet the safety standards required today

  • Just watched the Universal Newsreel of the Mary arriving at Long Beach back in December 1967. What an awsome sight with all the boats in the harbor.

  • Let me share your dream! Very nice vid. Thanks!

  • Its sad to see all of these majestic ships just sitting and not being moved again! This video's great!

  • it was probably an air conditioning unit the last time the hull got a full paint job was when it came to long beach, and after that the black part of the hull was painted once by disney, but the company managing the ship are planning to repaint the black part of the hull soon, theyve already repainted the funnels and red waterline area. i visited the ship a couple weeks ago it looks better than ive seen it in years. the ship is supposed to be transfered to a company called Delaware North soon.

  • I personally think Olympic class liners look better since I think the curves on ships make them look ugly

  • Well if the Queen Mary is on the power grid. The noise I heard must have been a huge air cooling unit. Can't think of what else it might be. Does anyone know when the last time the black part of her hull has been painted?

  • It would be almost impossible. You would have to basically rebuild the entire engine room and boiler room and reinstall power to the controlls at the the bridge. It is possible, but it would take forever. And plus ships today dont look like the queen mary. It is a classic form of a ship. Ships today look like the queen mary 2.

  • still... rebuild the entire engine room and boiler room and reinstall power to the controlls at the the bridge.... humans have done things greater and harder than that.

bring queen mary back to britain! wooo

  • Hi.. It dos not matter how the ship looks like..

The ship sailed the high seas before.. Why not again! With a full restoration and some years in a dry dock and maybe a handful of money.. It is Possible.. IM WITH THE DREAM!

What we need in the world is more Classic liners on duty..

    Regards Gerner

  • Britain is the only place she truly belongs, she isn't even docked in the commonwealth!! it is possible to make some repairs and return the grand ship home

  • free and rasie the ships! if we dont... earth will become smaller! sreisy.

  • well, not a single thing on the queen mary works under the ships power, not a single boiler remains on the ship, and the only remaining engine room is just for display purposes, the ship is completely dependent on the city's power grid.

and it would be pretty much impossible to ever make the ship sail again, but maybe someday the ship will be restored and appreciated here in long beach.

  • The Queen Mary Rocks, Great Video!

  • Give the Queen Mary back to Southampton so it can be a museum ship over there. Its sad to see the beautiful piece of engineering and history as a mediocre hotel in a place where nobody gives it a second glance.

  • According to Yahoo! Travel, this is what you get when you cross a Ramada with a rusty old ship.

  • The people who write poor reviews about the QM were expecting a 5 star luxury hotel. QM was designed to carry thousands of passengers across the Atlantic. Her rooms have most of her 1930's fittings and decor. She is an art deco palace and the only one left of her kind. As hotel guests, you'll have free reign to explore her all night long. It's like entering an era gone-by. She's not seaworthy and if she ever left Long Beach, it would be for the scrapyard which would break so many hearts.

  • Amen...She is still the Grandest of them all in my opinion. I was married on her. Went to England on her sister the Queen Mary 2. I visit the Queen Mary many times a month. One of her telephones is on my desk at home. I have stayed on the ship so many times, they know my first name.

  • Skot66 ~ When were you married on her? I was married on her on March 31, 2005 by Captain Roy Sorge in her Royal Wedding Chapel (originally the 2nd Class Smoking Room) and we had our reception at the Chelsea Restaurant. Like you, she is very close to my heart.

  • Hi Operafan, I was married on her September 9, 2006. We had our wedding outside on the stern of the ship. We had our reception in the Veranda Grill. The entire wedding and reception was Art Deco. Even the guests wore the proper period attire. I wore tails, my wife for a white satin wedding dress, similar to what Jean Harlow would wear. It was an amazing day. And yes, the Captain married us too. The day had a dreamy golden glow to it. Very surreal.

  • I don't think it's her boiler thats been used. When I was there in the summer of 1991. I think one of her onboard generaters was in use to creat electricity. But I could be wrong. Perhaps someone who knows for sure could chime in?

  • actually i think one of her boilers still works, i mean how else would they heat the ship.

  • well shes needs to sail at least once every 40 years stepehn

  • Actually I'am surprised the City of Long Beach haven't put the Queen Mary up for sale. Considering how much Dubai paid for the Qu2. She must be worth far more than the 3.5 million that they bought her for back in 1967.

  • I really enjoyed this Video. It allowed me to imagine what it must of been like to see her sail. Lovely editing work, thanks a lot!

    Jack.

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome video! I have often thought about this as well. however, when the Queen Mary was sold from Cunard to Long Beach there was a clause in the contract stating the ship could never sail again as a cruise ship.

The only way something like this would happen was if Cunard were to buy her back.

  • It would be a nice dream, but a realistic impossibility. Still I would pay to sail on her again. It would be nice is she could be sold, or taken to, a place where they really appreciate her and turn her back into the grand lady she was.

  • How do I rate your video? EXCELLENT. Never get tired of watching the Mary pulling away from the dock. Anychance you could make it that she leaves right out of the picture? And the dock is empty.

  • Well it looks like the Queen Mary is not going anywhere anytime soon. The Queens Project seems to have closed up shop. Website no longer availble. You Tube video's removed. They seemed to have vanished as fast as they appeared.

  • Thanks for your comments Kitt! You're right, it seems the Queens Project has closed it's website. It remains a dream to free the Queen Mary. It would be sad on the other hand, when this beautiful liner would disappear as a museum. I always enjoy coming back, strolling on her decks and dreaming of the golden age of the ocean liners. By the way, what about my video. How do you rate it? Greetings from Switzerland, Lolo

  • Without a shadow of a doubt one of the most beautiful ships ever build.

A piece of living history in the laegue of ''Cutty Sark'', ''Victory'', ''Warrior'', ''Constitution'', Batavia'', etc. At least she deserves restoration to her old glory.

  • There are lots of reasons why she should stay and lots of people who think she should be left alone. On our Myspace page, Facebook, and on Twitter.

YouTube will not let me post a link. But go to Google and type in "Leave the Queen Mary Alone" and you will see the petition site.

  • the first voage out of Long Beach would need an escort by tug to a dry dock to refebish her from the inside out.

  • The SS United States still has its propulsion system, its ranjs havent been filed with mud and silt, it hasent had the guts surgically removed by gas axe. Thus I feel that the SS UNited States is actually in better condition then the Queen Mary. The Queen requires extensive work, including rebuilding the engine room, and new propellers, not impossible but what is more a realistic option...SS United States, which just needs a refurbishment or RMS Queen Mary which needs to be totally rebuilt!

  • let the Queen sail again,,,,I want to be on her when she does,,,,Im still looking for the song QUEEN OF THE SEA,,,,which is the oringal Queen mary song,,,,1936

  • The Queen Mary is not beached. She is tied to a dock. There is a group called the Queen Mary Project that wants to buy her and get her sailing again. But it's questionable whether they have all the money needed.

  • starbster the Queen mary 1 the one thats beached at long beach california is going to be bought? I never herd of that

  • does any one know where I can get the song ,,,,,Queen of the Sea,,, which is the oringal Queen Mary song sang in 1936 by Horatio Nicholls,,would love to find the record or an mp3 recording of the full song,,,,When and if she ever sails again I want to be on Her shes the Last of her kind,,,LONG LIVE THE QUEEN MARY,,,where theres a will theres a way,,,

  • starbster, im pretty sure the titanic weighed 36 thousand tons not 46 MILLION tons!!! I agree with the vid, it would be nce to see her sail again, but I dont think it'll ever happen...

  • Its a beutifull notion but I think the best that can be done is either to restore the United States as a travelling historic liner, or, push to have a replica of the Queen Mary Built. What we need to remember is we dont want to loose the original Queen Mary as its now far to historic to be let loose with the remote possibility of it sinking. At least in Long Beach she is there for everyone to see and visit. as well as provide us all an example of the perfection and class of the Art Deco era.

  • Basiltyne............I was going to say basically the same thing, but you said it for me. I stayed on the Queen Mary back in June of 1996, and it was one of the biggest thrills of my life.

  • More restorable? Oh please give me a break. The Queen Mary is in far better shape then the S S United States. I'am afraid that ship will probably end up with the same fate as the Norway.

  • If you want to restore something, why not the SS United States? Probably more restorable.

  • build a new titanic is what i ment

  • Also her boilers which have been gutted out would cost well over a million dollars. The boilers that still remain are completely not in operational service and have been rusting away since the 1960s. These boilers used fuel oil which is high in cost nowadays. It probably better she burned coal which is now at $100 a ton. However these would also have to be replaced. The turbine engines would also have to be replaced including the control room which was lost by fire over a decade ago.

  • The ship is originally from Liverpool and not Southampton. Southampton was its original port of call. But again as I've said before she's too old and obsolete for todays travel. The Queen Mary would have to first have her hull restored and parts replaced to be seaworthy. The restoration to send her to sea and also register her as an ocean liner again could cost in the trillions of dollars. With the way the economy is in the US is right now it is not feasible and completely unnecessary.

  • lol the QM1 will be bought by a society of Australia and kept to her old self and sailing evrywhere with the money we have to restore her

  • send it back to where it belongs.

    southampton england

  • I agree it would be fantastic to see the Real queen to sail again. her predecessor QM2 is a great, big, fabulous ship but I myself like the classic look of 1930's liners. Queen Mary could do special cruises to certain ports most cruise lines do not go to. maybe one day hopefully

  • sry shes to old as many people said restoring her would cost more the dads ranch payed 3times and where are you gonna find some one to build the stuff and the ghosts i bilve in them and they would not be happy and would promly start haunting ramdom ppl and whos gonna kno who to drive a ship like that

  • it mit not work but queen mary does need to be pepared and if she sailed agin what are they sopose to do with the ghosts

  • what ghosts???

  • really im sorry to let you down but to let her sail again would cost more then it would to restore the ss united states which is next in the line to be restored. The reason is because they would not only have to get new boiler rooms but they would have to rebuild the hull and most of the bottom of the ship. She is already a floating hotel which is mostly the fate of all classic ocean liners and it is to late i mean they might as well let the qe2 sail instead of this fate.

  • You all have to think of the costs it would take to restore and even reproduce the boilers and engines on this ship. It is simply not feasible. Much of the equipment on board her is obsolete nowadays. Also her boilers ran on fuel oil and any type of liquid fuel during these days is rather expensive. True she is a grand lady, but I believe it's best she remain docked. She's done her duty. The reason she was retired in the first place is because of her age and the diesel engine took over.

  • I agree with maplewoodsp the city of Long Beach will have to do somthing about the Mary's lower hull plates. Before she sinks at her berth. Then they will really be looking at a big repair job. Thats the first thing I noticed when I was there in the summer of 1991. How the water was all rust coloured.

  • Also, if this ship is returned to sea it would be a financial failure if refurbished to her original self. todays passengers want big loud ships with every hight tech luxury possible.

So you would have rip up the ship apart and basically redesign her to look like the QM2, which you guys will hate. Just let her be, and if the hotel is failing which I hear it is, well, unfortunatley everything comes to an end and we must accept it.

  • The Queen CAN NOT sail again, not with the SOLAS 2010 law coming up. Blame the environmental whack jobs for that. That's why so many ship are being killed off in Alang, India.

  • hey akosilolo.....are you a filipino?? cause im a filipino too.... anyway tnx 4 uploading this vid..!!

  • lol we need ships like this these days

  • I believe you might find our project of interest on this subject. The complete restoration and preservation of the Queen Mary. Search for the Queen's Project here on YouTube or on Google.

  • I first visited the Queen Mary in 1982, and returned twice. My children remember the last visit. I would also like to see it sail again. There has been controversy over the years in Long Beach, and the operators want it kept quiet. I don't see how it can continue into the future without dry dock treatment. I understood the dry dock that could handle the ship was destroyed for the benefit of the Chinese needing a shipping depot. The SS United States also needs to sail again.

  • the titanic should sail again

  • really? your going there. thats horrible.

  • uh the titanic is at the bottom of the sea and how are we gonna restore a 46 000000 ton ship underwater?

  • The Closest thing to titanic that is even remotely possible to restore is the Britannic, and even then the raising alone would cost 10 Billion, not counting the cleanup, treatement repainting/repairs etc..

  • i visited the RMS Queen Mary this past summer, i was so disapointed in the way she was cared for over the past 40 years, in places there was grass growing in her deckboards, rain water was flowing near the Immortal Chaplans Room, floors were slanting, i could swear i could hear her cry!, its time to quit looking at this piece of history, and do something, restore her to all her glory and let her take to the seas once again

  • nice idea....shame to France we have forget our past liner!!

  • Any contrivance of man can be restored, all it takes is money!! Her engines (turbines) are still intact, though the boilers were removed along with all but one prop. I have often wondered what her hull plates look like, since she hasn't been in dry dock for 40 years to be cleaned and painted.

  • DIdnt it suffer of great damages and almost sank?

  • Are you refering to to Curacao incident during the war when the QM was on her way to Southampton with a shipload of troops? She ripped the ship in half and there was a huge shred on the ships prow/bow that reached to the waterline. Lucky it wasn't quite below the waterline...hope that answers your question :)

  • If we "set sail" the ship, sure there's the cost, but there's also the matter of destroying the beauty that is her history. What I mean is, the bridge would have to be gutted and refitted with modern technology, and the top would have that round ball cruise ships have, the whole LINER wouldn't be quite a LINER anymore.

A replica on the other hand, seems more plausable :)

  • You don´t need to refitted the hole bridge it will crash the hole ship. and then it isènt QM anymore.

  • ...thats...kinda what I was saying. Do you mean that you don't need to refit the whole bridge to refit the ship to sail? Or just plainly that it would ruin it to refit the bridge to modernism? Peace :)

  • Id love to see this ship sail again! truth is i doubt it would be cost effective. Most of the hull would need plating not to mention the superstructure that would need repairs.thats before the cost of engines.boilers.etc.then of course theres the fact that to make her safe and seaworthy she would have to be brought up to modern day safety standards. However Id support any chance to get her back on the ocean.

  • you know what pisses me off is that i went to there website queen mary there changing the whole thing to its origanial self how stupid

  • akosilolo Man we restore heaps of steam ship.s Includen The Queen Mary

  • the queen mary could sail again xmas 2012 that is what i have heard off my dad how was her head engener they r thinking off fitting her with oil steam engens so she will be the only steam powed ship and so
