Good luck getting certification for a product like this ! the FAA will never allow you to point laser to the sky, in case a plane or any human is around in any flying apparatus. Even if you will have a computer that do image analysis to detect a background interference, it will be hard to prove that a software failure/bug will not cause the laser to fire on anything else other then a mosquito. Interesting Idea though, I had the same idea about a month ago.
I had the very same idea. I think it's awesome that someone already took a professional perspective on this. Please get this thing on the market soon, I need one :D. God how I hate mosquitos and would like to see them lit up :D.
Ramones - Teenage Lobotomy Lobotomy, lobotomy, lobotomy, lobotomy! DDT did a job on me Now I am a real sickie Guess I'll have to break the news That I got no mind to lose. All the girls are in love with me I'm a teenage lobotomy. Slugs and snails are after me DDT keeps me happy Now I guess I'll have to tell 'em That I got no cerebellum. Gonna get my Ph.D. I'm a teenage lobotomy. REPEAT Hell though...I love the TED vids! :-)
This is not a practicable invention. It is more expensive than chemical methods and dangerous. I would rather be bitten by mosquitoes than blinded by a laser.
i need it so badly here in my home... i dont have moscitos but wasps.... i hate wasps, they fly around like motherfuckers and want to sting me and my cat all the time
"innovation" indeed! funny how his company, Intellectual Ventures, is know as one of the biggest patent trolls in the world and follows a directive that seems to terrorize innovation with a landslide of litigation as a business model.
Wow. We can build that out of consumer electronics spare parts. Great to see some innovators... and some idiots say people don't invent anymore. Why is 1/6 of mankind starving, again? Oh yeah, because we use money and trade to perpetuate centuries old ideas of feudalism....
Nathan Myhrvold - Do your homework, he's an evil dude, killer of innovation, technology terrorist. An enemy of progress, this is all a red herring. Look what he really stands for.
I don't want to harp on details, but really. 3rd world countries? What does one of these things cost and how long can it run on batteries due to unreliable power grids in those countries? Don't get me wrong, very cool, but seems a little impractical with these simple questions ignored.
Uses of this technology is limited. It still requires special reflective surface in order to work. The mosquito would have to pass between the laser and the reflective fence and be close enough to cast a shadow on it.
If that is the case then it is not different then the currently available electrical mosquito killers that attract bugs with light.
For a moment I thought we had something here.
As far as the tracking software goes perhaps it is based on SwisTrack or similar.
Science! Fuck yeah.

this may work in an experimental situation but it would be very difficult to detect and locate mosquitos in a real life situation

So, how many patents does he hold on building stuff out of parts bought on eBay?
Nathan and his company are patent trolls. Why is Ted giving air to parasites?

DEATH TO MOSQUITOES!
On a more pessimistic note, won't mosquitoes just "evolve" to have erratic "sound" signatures and make this laser useless?
