Considering the cost of the unit and what it can do, it's far too expensive. For the same price you could build yourself a high quality computer, perhaps with a slightly bigger case. You'd have a keyboard, mouse and optical drive. Even a Windows Home Server license. You can hook up a printer, or other device that might be used over a network. I don't really see the point in this product, especially when you look at the high price. A lot of buck for too little bang.
You're really paying for the software, which, until you've actually used you have no idea how thorough it is. HP has done a really great job with this product. I thought like you before I decided to test it out within my 2 week return period and theres no way I could do the same stuff with a server I've built myself. I also didnt pay nearly the price ($199) :D
Well, i suppose it'd be good for me then. I'm familiar with older versions of windows, but i'm clueless when it comes to networking. That, plus i've always wanted to run a server and i got sick of only having a 177 GB drive and being unable to use the printer. (our printer isn't wireless, and it's in a different room from my compy)
hi jameswithaxe, sure you can use with samba (smb) file sharing but you can't administrate the mediasmart, i explain you must install a console administration and it's only for Windows systems. and strange point, the simily RAID1, all files or folders are directly duplicate into the second hard disk, then you lost 50% disk space, why HP/MS don't use RAID5, it's possible mediasmart have 4 bays ?
wow lol i will not need to install other hard drives that 1 tb good enough for me

Tell that to your average home computer user.
This device is for those who aren't that tech-savvy or have a degree in comp-sci.

£501.41 on my site and you can connect with a mac to share data but the real power of the backup function is Windows only
