tonanthony - Her voice WAS HUGE! A Dramatic Colloratura! BUT!!! She kept it down, undersang, to protect the voice and lengthen her career. And it worked! Her QUEEN OF THE NIGHT is the ONE that fits the role!!! Not Roberta Peters or other mosquito voices... my opinion....
There is a remarkable sense of ease and mastery about Joan's singing here. I sometimes wonder if this is part of the reason that some people found her "undramatic". With more effortful singers, there can be an extra tension in the voice which translates as drama for an audience, and which results in part from us wondering whether they will get through what they are singing. An example for me is Domingo's Otello in which he undoubtedly triumphed, but partly through the vocal effort required.
SIN DUDA LA VOZ....MAS PERFECTA DEL MUNDO.....LLENA DE MATICES.....Y EVOLUCIONES SONORAS EN SU PROPIA ARIA.....LA VERDADERA CANTANTE..........TODA UNA PERSONALIDAD VOCAL ......QUE NACE DE SU PROPIA ESENCIA.......ESO NO SE PUEDE APRENDER EN UN CLASE.....AUNQUE LE HAYAN DADO MUCHAS......ELLA NACIO CON UN DON.....
Good singing technique, but this in fact this does not sound like Rossini original aria anymore - too many changes, new runs etc. I preffer sticking to original a bit more.
lolz I like the way she tries the fact that she can't sing the low notes by replacing them with complex runs. oh well, long live the queen of sopranos =P
Her lowest notes sound weird, don't they? Like nasal, or "bottled"... Anyway, she keeps being one of the best coloratura sopranos ever. Sutherland forever!
All the more extraordinary considering around the same time she recorded Turandot with Pavarotti and Mehta. Flexible coloratura without shrillness or a sense of the voice being 'lightened' - so many singers squeak out the high notes -but not Joan!
Crystal purity with effortless richness and power- best vocal performance in this contest by far i think. I also have a soft spot for Frederica von Stade, very charming in her 40's.
it seems like she's talking an not singing, that's what makes her great. she reached those high notes without any difficulty, or so it appears. that's what makes great singers.
Physical attractiveness nor dramaturgy was never Joan's strength ... but she produced the most amazing sounds ever in opera even at the expense of those consonants she was constantly criticized ... to hell with diction - a very small price to pay for those gorgeous notes!!! Viva LA STUPENDA
I suppose so...but artistry is all about choices and just because she chose not to do it the same way doesn't leave her behind in any sense. Not to mention, I think her voice sounds MUCH better (in the sense of tone. I don't intend to start any fights here.)
It pains me to say this (as La Stupenda is my favorite soprano) but i never thought she should sing Rosina, and this video confirms my thoughts. I mean it's not bad in any sense of the word, as the ornaments and pretty much everything else is done well, but for me she doesn't seem like a real Rosina. To me, she sounds like Rosina's mother here. I like seeing that she's had fun here, and that it was sung well, but for me, no Rosina for you Dame Joan! 4/3
As much as I love Sutherland, I am going to have to agree with you. Who's your most favorite Rosina ? Mines include Mado Robin (not the coloratura) and Sumi Jo (not the emotion), lol
A pitty this recording is play back. And indeed she never made a pretty (face) picture.... But (with the help of her husband) she lets us hear what a coloratura soprano can do with this aria, without taking it 'over the top'. 5/4
I love the easiness of her sound and the wonderful musicianship. The ornaments in the recit are especially florid and unexpected. She does show some Rosina fire here, and Sutherland has shown she can handle buffa with Fille du Regiment, it would have been intersting to see how she handled the whole opera. 5/4
Drdre333, actually Sutherland did record the aria on her Belcanto Arias album late in her career, along with other arias from Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti, some from operas she never performed on stage.
I don't know why people are being harsh in marking down sevoflurane's comment. They are quite spot on, actually. Joan's notorious for some vowels not being clear. That being said, I have always been a huge fan, and her instrument is amazing. The coloratura here is excellent. The "Who's Afraid of Opera" is cheesy, but that's what it is. 4.5/3.5
One can always count on Sutherland to add tasteful ornaments not usually sung by other sopranos. Like Anderson's, this is an old school rendition, but the difference is the ease of execution as well as the spirited interpretation. 5/5
I am giving it 5/4 - her flawless technique and the use of several new and different cadenzas and variations is delightful and sound period authentic. Other sopranos seem to have listened to a Callas recording and just sing the same old cadenzas that Callas did so to hear something fresh is a thrill.
Such a shame that Sutherland never added this role to her repertoire. This show gave her the opportunity to sing some really beautiful music, that for some reason or another, she never performed on a real stage. 5/5
Ugggg here we go again. Colorturafan, I know you must LOVE Sutherland, but why do you keep posting these who's afraid of opera clips. This just isn't in the same league as the others, 3/1

She should have made a studio recording of this role. *Sigh*
