Gimp is usually on par with more standard things in PS like layers and masks, so yes, I believe you can do the same, but the tools/menus might be slightly different.

how come when i use the gradient (exactly like your) it didn't come out like that 3:38? the 1st layer just become darker

Make sure you have your gradient set as "foreground to background" and your foreground color is black.

yes i did do that
i add a layer mask and everything
but it didn't transparent
or maybe bc i did it different
i used 2 pictures but not on top of each other like yours but side to side
