Howd you time it so well that you pretty much cross the checkpoint right before the game disqualifies you?

Well, even if the game says "0'00" seconds left, you can still reach the checkpoint, but only if you are fast enough. So just try to be close to the checkpoint with full speed, when the timer reaches 0'00. Then you should usually be able to still cross the checkpoint.

Excellent Job, but what does pause trick do?

You press "Start" after doing a salto (when you land on the water).

Then you get points without doing anything, because the game thinks that you are still doing the salto. Just when you cross the finish line you will get your points, which are more than you could usually get.
