@largolegato He is a legend-composer of the century and you want him play pieces of another composer.? Such talents shouldn't do that if not having the freedom of improvisation.:)
Hearing what a magnificent performance this man gives of his own music, I would be interested to hear him perform some other music. I imagine he would do a terrific job at playing Debussy and Ravel maybe even Prokofiev or Bartók.
Anyway, this man really is a great composer and a great pianist.
No matter how many times i listen to this, i just can't get enough,. He's not Jazz, but who cares. One of the greatest classical composers of modern times, for sure.
Very interesting stuff, but I'm a bit disturbed by his claustrophobic use of time. He seems to be terrified by rests, time suspension, rubati....pacing isn't part of his vocabulary. His compositions are kind of driven by a "Horror vacui".
his left hand is a fucking beast O.O makes me jealous he can both compose jazz and the same time have such a relaxed left hand this guy trust talent in jazz :)
@unclejuniorsoprano oscar peterson and mad monk do not have the high level classical training of Kapustin, so the comparison here is not very relevant.
@Ahelphand You misunderstood my comment. By "mad monk" I meant that his name is similar to that of Rasputin. I'm aware that Oscar Peterson was not trained as a classical pianist, but that's beside the point. It's not "training" that I'm comparing, but "style"; the jazz idiom as played by a Russian pianist.
@unclejuniorsoprano Kapustin's idiom is very diverse across his repertoire, his chamber music and preludes can at times be compared to Roslavets, Kabalevsky even Bolling
@Ahelphand I understand that. I just don't get your point. Simply put, I said that Kasputin plays like a Russian Oscar Peterson. You obviously know more about this jazz idiom than I do. I commend you for that & thank you for the comparisons. I will check them out.
There's all kinds of things going on here. An hour ago I hadn't even heard of this guy ... I've been hanging out to hear something new like this..he's brilliant!
regardless of his amazng composing - surely kapustin must rank among the best living pianists in the world too - i bet that he could play his etudes as fast as he wanted to without losing thier musicality (unlike some of the other pianists on youtube).
Kapustin once said, "I was never a jazz musician. I never tried to be a real jazz pianist, but I had to do it because of the composing. I'm not interested in improvisation -- and what is a jazz musician without improvisation? All my improvisation is written, of course, and they became much better; it improved them."
kapustin was when young a great classical pianis whe record soviet music like concertos witth orchestra!!!!!
