The entire solar system is going through changes - it's the POLLUTION we produce which we should be most concerned about and how it is destroying life - also human arrogance - cutting of the forests and ignorant belief systems that lead us into wars that destroy and waste resources. The thing is, neither side of the issue is, off the bat, "real science." Real science is criticizing the issue at all (this video), rather than just accepting it off the bat. For science to be science, it must be testable, it must involve repeatable results with empirical data. As it stands, we have conflicting data, so the issue (rightfully) is not settled. However, it is equally ridiculous to call global warming a hoax or a lie. There are some good House and Senate reports out there that have some pretty interesting scientific data. Those are good resources for starters. I usually urge people to ignore Gore and the media. However, I am glad that Gore is at least making environmentalism a topic of public debate.

To me it just makes sense that millions of SUVs, coal factors, and everything else has a negative effect on the earth's eco system. It was not created to handle such a burden. And, as we overpopulate the global and cut down all the trees, and increase pollution levels more and more, it only makes sense that the shit will hit the fan sometime.

We've been on this planet, what 200,000 yrs? 5 million? The planet's been here 4.5 BILLION! And only in the last 100-200 yrs have we had significant industry, do you mean to tell me WE'RE responsible for the "large" amts of CO2? There might be a CO2 scarcity, not too much of it. CO2 is ESSENTIAL for LIFE!
I find it totally irrelevant how long we have been on this earth. Would you like to compare the footprint of an 1800 human being to an 2008 human being--especially an American?? The average American produces 56 tons of trash per year. I think only the last 100-150 years are relevant. Unless somehow you think caveman had similar lifestyles to what I enjoy today.
Why is it relevant, again? I see nothing to indicate so. I don't think we have a CO2 scarcity. I am aware that that has been more CO2 at times. I'm aware that it is not the most abundant GHG. But who is talking just of CO2?? Not me. It is only one GHG and one factor.
Humans didn't even have fight at first. We have oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear, etc. We throw away over 100 billion polyethylene plastic per year, and speaking of Texas, there is an island of plastic in the Pacific the size of Texas--two even. So please, tell me how it is relevant that we have been on this planet for 200,000 years. Humans were animals (and still are) for almost all of those 200,000 years.
We know CO2 far from being a pollutant is an essential element of the food cycle. What's more, we know, at least 4 plant growth, current levels of CO2 are sub-optimal. The same can be said of temp for humans in some areas. Antartica, for ex, a large potential habitat, only became covered by ice some 5M yrs ago. Large northern polar areas are also less accommodating of humans than they have been because of currently cold climates.
So increased CO2 levels might be just what the doctor ordered.
We can be sure of this as all CO2 we're putting in the atmosphere came originally from plant & animal life & was sequestered when animals died. We can also be sure we'll never get close to exceeding levels of CO2 from the past. We can be certain @ conds. prevailing in the past, CO2 levels of this magnitude aren't inimical to life; or the FFs wouldn't exist in the 1st place. You are confusing the necessity for objectivity. If I don't act like my opinions are objective, then there is no "lie." Opnions are always allowed and are never objective. Fun video. I did notice though that with most past 'doomsday' scenarios they came from one or a few fringe sources. The current 'global warming' issue being touted as a serious problem is coming from most of the worlds eminent successful scientists including groups such as AAAS(American Association for the Advancement of Science)and NAS(National Academy of Sciences). Though, I'm not saying the science involved is infallible, what it has gone through is extensive peer review.
Redbeardian, it's not true that most of the world's scientists support the CO2 dogma. For example consider the Russian Academy of Sciences, the American Association of State Climatologists. I have personally viewed the abstracts of hundreds of articles in peer reviewed journals. If you're open minded it's easy to check for yourself.
CO2 dogma debate aside, the earth is warming, CO2, Methane, etc amounts are rising in atmosphere, polar ice and glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, climates are changing, species are dying off. All these items point to some critical event ahead of us, perhaps an extinction event if we compare the data to prehistory. The question of when and how bad may be still not 100% worked out but I'd be hard pressed to argue that something isn't in store for us.

Sea levels are rising slower in the 2nd half of the 20th century than the first (and anyway have been rising since the last ice age ended). No concrete evidence of significant climate change - except for the better. Not a single documented extinction as a result of global warming so far. What exactly is the problem?

There have been events of global warming in the past which could have had different triggers. Such as a comet impact, or say a super volcano eruption.
Currently, humans creating a society based of oil, and having the population balloon, in turn, creating a higher demand for oil year after year, is the root trigger of the current trend.

That is the crux of the problem with "Better safe than sorry," because not everything can apply or else a lot of money goes to waste, money which could have gone towards problems which are factually recognized (not theoretically- not to bash theory itself of course, but to be applied to policy you have to be darn sure of what you're doing and, as of yet, we do not satisfactorily understand conservation). The thing is, neither side of the issue is, off the bat, "real science." Real science is criticizing the issue at all (this video), rather than just accepting it off the bat. For science to be science, it must be testable, it must involve repeatable results with empirical data. As it stands, we have conflicting data, so the issue (rightfully) is not settled. Spot on though, bunshine8plutz, in that ad hoc arguments like accusing someone of being payed off by "Big Oil" are all too common for me.

Just because scientists were wrong in the past doesn't mean that they're never right. In fact, scientists are most often right than wrong. No one benefits from the global warming scare. If no one takes action, and the scientists are right, the world could be a completely different place in 100 years. As said in another video called "How it all ends", global warming is more accurately called global climate destabilization. If nothing is done, all coastal cities (Like NYC) would flood etc.

I see numerous solutions that involve less money for the average Joe and fewer taxes. Like I said, I get a tax break if I buy windows, a new AC, heater, a hybrid, etc. That is the opposite of taxing me; and, if there is MMGW, then it is part of the solution. I think all the global governances crap is rhetoric. I think energy independence from alterative energy can make us more isolationist, like we used to be.

Oh of course I agree. Climate change and Global Warming are both misnomers, I often point out. I often use man-made climate change or MMGW. No one debates whether the earth is warming--except nuts who argue that the science indicates that we should be more worried about cooling.
I still don't see how human influence is infinitesimal. Plus, most people don't argue that a massive change is required to create great changes in climate.

It's true that humans do fuck up the environment in a myriad of ways, too many to list. Will any of them lead to rising sea levels? There's evidence to SUGGEST it, but who really knows 100% for sure. It doesn't matter anyhow: the population is at 6 billion+ right now & will never stop increasing, even if rates fluctuate. Making large-scale changes at the level of BILLIONS takes much too long to ever make a real difference. We're already fucked, just make the best of it and live responsibly.

I find that most of the people who call global warming a 100% hoax or a lie always fit within at least one of the following categories: (1) they are a libertarian, (2) they hate Al Gore and will automatically be against anything he is for, (3) they drive a sports car or SUV, (4) they are over 50, (5) they are from the South.
I'm not saying you cannot question something, but those are the people who I find usually refuse to listen to any science that supports man-made climate change.

I agree. There should be a debate. Science is about questioning theories. Gore saying that there is no room for debate is silly. However, it is equally ridiculous to call global warming a hoax or a lie. There are some good House and Senate reports out there that have some pretty interesting scientific data. Those are good resources for starters. I usually urge people to ignore Gore and the media. However, I am glad that Gore is at least making environmentalism a topic of public debate.

Yeah, I have been following the debate for some time and following the science, and I believe man is messing up the earth's climate. To me it just makes sense that millions of SUVs, coal factors, and everything else has a negative effect on the earth's eco system. It was not created to handle such a burden. And, as we overpopulate the global and cut down all the trees, and increase pollution levels more and more, it only makes sense that the shit will hit the fan sometime.

The "theory" is that CLIMATE CHANGE is caused by burning fossil fuel & deforestation. This is FALSE. Earths climate's been changing ever since the Earth was & humans are NOT causing it. Sure, if everyone is living on lakes and rivers and on top of buildings. But size isn't really the issue. It is how much waste each person produces, how much food they eat, and how much energy we consume. Americans are fat and use lots of energy.

We know CO2 far from being a pollutant is an essential element of the food cycle. What's more, we know, at least 4 plant growth, current levels of CO2 are sub-optimal. The same can be said of temp for humans in some areas. Antartica, for ex, a large potential habitat, only became covered by ice some 5M yrs ago. Large northern polar areas are also less accommodating of humans than they have been because of currently cold climates.
So increased CO2 levels might be just what the doctor ordered.

We can be sure of this as all CO2 we're putting in the atmosphere came originally from plant & animal life & was sequestered when animals died. We can also be sure we'll never get close to exceeding levels of CO2 from the past. We can be certain @ conds. prevailing in the past, CO2 levels of this magnitude aren't inimical to life; or the FFs wouldn't exist in the 1st place. In fact, temps in the past were much higher @ times than now, yet the world managed to support mega- fauna, like dinosaurs.

Yeah, because reducing air pollution so that children's soccer games aren't canceled because of Smog levels isn't a good thing. Personally, I hope CAFE standards go way down so that the air gets more polluted so that child athsma continues to get more and get common. The problem is not with global warming. The problem lies within the human mind. Everyone has an opinion & is always right no matter what. Humans do clearly create plenty of problems, since in large numbers we're stupid, inefficient, & careless - but no one can really unanimously quantify or qualify the scale of these problems. Yet they still try, since they think they're omnipotent. People just need to stop running their conceited fuckin mouths & keep to themselves. We'll all die off soon enough

i believe what you say quite humurous too lol but one truth is that the world in its history has been alot hotter/colder and contained more co2 than present day, so my thinking is it will always maintain an equiliberium whether its with us existing on it or not...

Fun video. I did notice though that with most past 'doomsday' scenarios they came from one or a few fringe sources. The current 'global warming' issue being touted as a serious problem is coming from most of the worlds eminent successful scientists including groups such as AAAS(American Association for the Advancement of Science)and NAS(National Academy of Sciences). Though, I'm not saying the science involved is infallible, what it has gone through is extensive peer review.

Redbeardian, it's not true that most of the world's scientists support the CO2 dogma. For example consider the Russian Academy of Sciences, the American Association of State Climatologists. I have personally viewed the abstracts of hundreds of articles in peer reviewed journals. If you're open minded it's easy to check for yourself.

CO2 dogma debate aside, the earth is warming, CO2, Methane, etc amounts are rising in atmosphere, polar ice and glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, climates are changing, species are dying off. All these items point to some critical event ahead of us, perhaps an extinction event if we compare the data to prehistory. The question of when and how bad may be still not 100% worked out but I'd be hard pressed to argue that something isn't in store for us.

Redbeardian, on the contrary, all of the indicators suggest nothing much out of ordinary - business as usual on the planet. Greenland and Antarctic ice mass roughly in balance. Sea levels are rising slower in the 2nd half of the 20th century than the first (and anyway have been rising since the last ice age ended). No concrete evidence of significant climate change - except for the better. Not a single documented extinction as a result of global warming so far. What exactly is the problem?

coldest winter EVER recorded. People dying in China. CO2 is impossible to link to Global Warming. Humans contribute 0.28% to greenhouse gas emissions. 14% of polar bear populations are decreasing while the rest stay the same or grow. New species are found by the month.

Things on earth aren't good, but they are going to kill every human, the new kid, before we destroy earth which has taken every beating the cosmos could throw at it for the past billions of years
