They spent their life apart, daring to do everything, except the only thing they both wanted. It is so difficult to take that last step that we'd rather do anything else to get there, even if nothing else would ever do and it is precisely because it is so hard to get there that love seems too good to be true.
Don't turn in circles, do not prevent yourself from daring to speak...
I found the ending the most epic ending in the a movie ever, their spouses would have murdered them for one thing plus it'd seem fair for it to be the "dare of dares" they both won.
Don't understand anyone who disliked the ending. Sure, they could've lived happily ever after because their love was so strong (as it always had been), but it wouldn't have been their love if they took the game out of it. :-)
why didn't they just divorce their respective spouses and get married? I mean, why would they kill themselves when they had just found each other again <.<

I remember watching this movie a while back and this is the movie that also provoked me to watch La Vie En Rose [also with Marion Cotillard].
This movie was so brilliantly made. As much as it broke my heart to see them buried in cement like that.. I guess it does fit that metaphor of endless love [how they are now forever in an embrace]. And that old couple scene might have just be the "what could have happened". However, I don't think the movie could have been made better.
This is so sick yet so romantic. For me, the old couple is them fulfilling the life they couldnt live on earth in heaven, never fails to make me cry lol. One of my favorite films.
@Purplemonkeyonabike To me the fact that none of the construction workers even tried to call out in horror or stop the pour is the main reason I have trouble believing that the end scene with them getting buried alive couldn't be real.
If anybody has an alternate explanation I'd love to hear it.
As kids, we happily take dares and risk getting punished. However, as we grow older, the consequences and realities gradually outweigh the liberating rush. The character's choices throughout this movie continuously reflect a disregard to realities and consequences, and I think their deaths are the ultimate testament to that same notion of "To win this game...., and to hell with the rest!"

One day, years later,I read they were together, and I felt so much joy,I smiled happy, got emotional, like I had witnessed the birth od their Love.
The time they spent apart over the years doesn't matter as they will now be cemented for eternity. lols. there are seven minutes of this film i haven't seen... . An Excellent fillm.
For any other film, it WOULD be disturbing/unrealistic. However, we've seen throughout this one how far Julien and Sophie are willing to go with their "dares"; they are so afraid of actually realizing their feelings that they eventually get in the way of their own happiness. It is my belief that they chose to die this way, together at last, rather than live and risk the chance of their own fears/insecurities drive them apart again.
this is the first i'm hearing of 'alternate ending' they get buried in concrete, you get a montage of their possible life together, and then cut back to the concrete. they are in the concrete, forever and ever. and by cemebting themselves there they can have all the future they want without the game getting in the way as it did earlier for them. they can love each other for real, stop the hurt they with inevitably cause each other. cemented together forever.
I believed they both died and got burried on cement, the cement however is a symbolism that their love is forever cemented.
I agree with everyone who said that the "old couple" ending was just an alternative.
This would have happened if they happen to get rid of the "game" sooner rather than later.
Hence the flashback of the kisses that never happened where "chances" or "paths" they could have chosen to attain the alternative ending but they didn't so they just chose to die together.
@aya0920 : I don't thing so...the cement is the symbol that both of them was win...it's shown by the round box with the cement with that both old couple...
That's the whole point of the dare. To die, to disturb the happy status quo, to risk the hard-earned happiness and peace JUST for that perfect moment of rush in the fulfillment of their mutual obsession.
@lanirlei Yeah I can kinda see what you mean. But by doing that, they sacrifice the chance to live their lives together :'( Like I said, it's very bittersweet I think

@aya0920 i agree with you but wouldn't you say that they were destined to die together anyway? kind of like they couldn't be together in life and would have destroyed eachother in life, and so the only way they could be together is in death?
I believe what the characters feel for each other isn't love at all, it is a sick enfatuation that shows no limit. The characters are obsessed with each other and what they have is like a drug, exciting, racy etc but not love. Like the title says "childs games". They are a couple of narcisists trying to out do each other despite the cost. I believe the end would have been what they "could" have been like had they not had personality disorders.

EVERYONE IS RIGHT. There are two endings both supported
1.) They died
2.) They grew old and the concert was a symbol of their love.
The last part supports both.
1.) If they died, you will know because of their box at the very end being in the concert.
2.) They grew old together, you can know that b/c if you look at their ten or whatever that thing is you can see that it is burned (Think back and remember the fire in Julian's car, the thing rolled out and it is showed very clearly)
this is the most absolutely amazing film i've ever seen. it's beautifully made. i think it's just fantastic.
i do believe that the scene of the old couple as the end was just an alternative ending, of how, if they had carried on together, their lives could have been.
fantastic scene this is. morbid, yet terribly romantic.
well..they died.there.together.the rest, when they are old is just in heaven..they just want to show that their love didn't stop even by death.they were together even in heaven.the graphics are differnet, too.there is a lot of light,so you can realise that there are in heaven.
I don't think the ending is a matter of interpretation at all or "how" you want to see it. They did end up dying together in the concrete. The "old couple" part was showing an alternative ending IF they had gotten to know each other the way "normal" couples do. But they expressed their love in a twisted way (through the game), and the dying in cement ending reflects that. The whole movie is just about love in different forms (even if it's sadistic), and the expression of it. Really beautiful.
this may seem like a silly question, but can anybody tell me of wether the kiss sealed in concrete was symbolic of their eternal love, and they actually lived to be old together, or if they really did die in the concrete? and the rest was, i don't know? cuz it keeps me up at night wondering...
also, can someone tell me name of the song, or at least the genre, cuz i can never find those kind of songs
the movie was so sadistic.but it was sooo good! in the end i didnt feel that bad so i heard they were going out in real life so it makes me feel better
hey does ne body have any french movies to recommend to me? i have already seen l'auberge espagnol, amelie, love me if you dare, the dreamers, love songs, ma mere, love etc, and audrey tatou movies. im interested particularly in romantic types. thanks,
"them", "hidden", "the page turner", "apres vous", "l'enfant"...they're all brilliant, if you want them in the style of love me if you dare and amelie, the one i'd most recoment would be apres vous, the other's are quite dark and leave the viewer guessing, but they are all wonderful
Oh and btw i think the did die even though they showed them as hold because they were also showing the times they kissed and those times never occurred in the movie. Like whe he's trying to catch her when she's on the bus, when he takes her to the restaurant, and other countless times like when their kids.
I'm not sure, but I have a theory. I think that they did die, but the old people thing was what their lives would have been like. It is what would have happened if they hadn't played the "game'. I don't think it's right, it's just a guess. very good movie though! :)
you're probably right it is left to the viewer interpretation. I personally think that the story never really ends becuase of the Julien's young voice at the end.
Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet are my favorite actors they are so talented and they make a really fine couple they should get together in real life
I hope that Marion will win the oscar she deserve it so much
I really loved this movie, but the end is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!

The whole movie is just about love in different forms (even if it's sadistic), and the expression of it. Really beautiful.

i would like to die like that is romantic.
this movie is really good.

this may seem like a silly question, but can anybody tell me of wether the kiss sealed in concrete was symbolic of their eternal love, and they actually lived to be old together, or if they really did die in the concrete? and the rest was, i don't know? cuz it keeps me up at night wondering...
also, can someone tell me name of the song, or at least the genre, cuz i can never find those kind of songs
Cuorante 3 years ago
The song is La Vie En Rose by Edith Piaf sung in early 1950's and yes it a symbolic scene of eternal love

hey does ne body have any french movies to recommend to me? i have already seen l'auberge espagnol, amelie, love me if you dare, the dreamers, love songs, ma mere, love etc, and audrey tatou movies. im interested particularly in romantic types. thanks,
meymey50 3 years ago
"them", "hidden", "the page turner", "apres vous", "l'enfant"...they're all brilliant, if you want them in the style of love me if you dare and amelie, the one i'd most recoment would be apres vous, the other's are quite dark and leave the viewer guessing, but they are all wonderful

also the title is acurately translated as "the very last one"

i loved this movie!!!!! so gooood!!
aww, i really didnt want them to die!!! :(
why would they die if they could live and be together?
my favorite movie!
and i guess you could see both ways: them dying or living; its how you want to see it :)
hibs0102 3 years ago 2
Oh and btw i think the did die even though they showed them as hold because they were also showing the times they kissed and those times never occurred in the movie. Like whe he's trying to catch her when she's on the bus, when he takes her to the restaurant, and other countless times like when their kids.
so yeahhh...
I ♥ it!!!

do they die or not?? i've always been confused witht that part
SweetNsOurxxRandy 4 years ago
I'm not sure, but I have a theory. I think that they did die, but the old people thing was what their lives would have been like. It is what would have happened if they hadn't played the "game'. I don't think it's right, it's just a guess. very good movie though! :)
roxy5759 4 years ago
i think its talking about the times they shud have kissed but didnt
daloo3a 3 years ago
my theory is that, either they live or they die, it just depends on how you want to see it.
aynakoitslyly 4 years ago 5
you're probably right it is left to the viewer interpretation. I personally think that the story never really ends becuase of the Julien's young voice at the end.

Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet are my favorite actors they are so talented and they make a really fine couple they should get together in real life
I hope that Marion will win the oscar she deserve it so much

what ? they are really together! you're french, well I am. How do you know ?
steffion 4 years ago
Yes, I am french. I read an interview in which Marion told that she was entirely happy because she was with Guillaume.
mathiilde03 4 years ago
steffion 4 years ago
do you have the interview?
