I love this prototype. I am a huge advocate of the horizontal scroll for options like this. One of the things we worked through on Buzzr was how much vertical real estate to take up with the admin dashboard. When the panels slide down, it takes up a fair amount of the screen real estate, which can be a problem if the user needs to reference something on the page. Some combination of horizontal scrolling bars and vertical palettes is probably the answer.
I think this is a really interesting idea and definitely worth pursuing further. We were hoping that the dashboard would be able to work as a 'jumping off point' for key tasks as well as an 'overview' of current activity on the system, so it would be great if we can reconcile those two tasks with the approach you are suggesting here...
That sidescrolling feature is backwards.
