It's nothing like that. Playing with a pick gives the Bass a sharper sound which might be suiting this type of music, though I have to say that the bass was in general bad sounding (not due to the pick). If you were to compare it to drums it would be more appropriate to compare it to the usage of different types of drumsticks such as rods and brushes. That itself would also be a pretty ridiculous comparison, though better than yours.

I remember there was a live version of this on youtube from right after elias joined the band, on something called RadioRock. that was a pretty cool version, kind of like this one.

they're both good versions, but I prefer the arrangement they used for the album.
