  • from 3.17 it really gets good for me

  • 7 people like justin bieber!

  • 3:59 is the best use of melody I've ever heard and I've heard A LOT of melodic metal. The band should get an award for this part.

  • Love it!!!

  • classic

  • Already love metal forever!

  • 2:37 the attack begins.....

  • This entire album is just incredible. I agree Arch reminds me of Kiske too.

  • Thanks for the lyrics and of course the song.

  • John Arch is Fates Warning! No disrespect to Ray Alder, but it's just not the same without him.

  • I mean holy shit, is that intro brilliant or what?

  • Fuck Master of Puppets or Number of the beast! This is where it's at!

  • @DerianX19 nah

  • shit i capture every old fates warning i can get my hands on there will never be another!!

  • I love Fates Warning and bands you love you sometimes can hear their influences come out in the music and in my opinion vocally I feel that Arch and Matheos must have enjoyed Uriah Heep.Uriah had a big influence on early metal but they never get any credit,it's always Black Sabbath,Led Zepplin and Hendrix but Uriah made some heavy for its time stuff and so did Blue Cheer.

  • True Fates is back, search Arch/Matheos !

  • sounds like iron maiden

  • @sk8metalnick6 the first line and the guitar riff sounds like The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Part I but way slower, and i prefer Iron Maiden any day but Fates Warning is decent. I guess....

  • @krisroks117 Are you people simply making these theories because they share the same song title with iron maiden? Fates Warning sounds nothing like Iron maiden...... They sound like Queensryche or Crimson Glory.. And iron maiden's Apparition is possibly one of their worst songs imo.

  • @Guyverhoeven Yeah, Iron Maiden's Apparition totally blows. This guy sounds kind of like the dude from Helloween, though.

  • @Guyverhoeven not at all...

  • take me away.... one of their best tracks from this album, always amazing!

  • I found this album at a flea market for 5$ !!

    AWESOME FIND !!

  • @TheMetalCollection i bought it when the album was 5 bucks..haha

  • ΕΠΟΣ!!!

  • amazing...i fucking am in love with this song...and the vocal harmony...

  • Metal, the way it's supposed to be! This one, Awaken The Guardian, and No Exit, to me, were all awesome!!!! Queensryche, Mindcrime, Rage for Order, Warning parallel groups, smoked alot of weed to these guys.

  • Arch has one of the most unique vocals, ever and it gives me fucking goosebumps

  • fucking badass

  • We used to call the part we're John came in with the background vocals at 3:59 as "John and the Little Arches"

  • @eclipseoneonone <<<<<<<<This is Victor Arduini, one of the original Fates Warning's guitarists and he'd recorded this masterpiece called "The Spectre Within"!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like John Arch BECAUSE he gets off-key sometimes;it works. It sounds sinister.

  • His voice is so amazing!

  • This is better than that avenged sevenfold shit kids like nowadays.

  • @FPSRuezga i think we are aware of that!

  • I still like monument better you know it's FUCKING AMAZING!!!This song kicks ass too ive know this since i was like 2 years old -_- I'm only 13

  • Hey Necrophile, I saw FW open up for QR on the Rage tour ( FW, Awaken the Guard ) they both tore it up. Bruce couldnt touch them back then. And I am a big maiden fan. saw em that same year!!!!!!

  • Everyones life summed up in one of the most direct, romantic and substantial verses in the history of this music:

In the 4 corners of life are the golden mirrors,

reflecting what you are and what you are to be

In the first is a young boy WHITE DOVE in his hand,

in the second is A WARRIOR IN ARMOR

in the third is the old man GOLD WATCH in his hand,

    fourth and last

    NO REFLECTION AT ALL

This is the kind of talent that listens to the name John Arch

  • First of all, Bruce Dickinson doesn't need to use his voice like this. He has more power than this poor man's Geoff Tate. I saw FW in 90 and passed out till Queensryche took the stage.

  • I'm not new to metal. Yet, i am new to this band, and they have touched my heart in a way only pure metal can do. I have spend years to search the metalband that can play with my mind, and since i heard Fates Warning i think i can finally sit back in peace, knowing that, for me, there will be no metal band with better music.

  • If I didn't know any better I'd swear that was Andre Matos singing.

    Awesome.

  • WHY ANYBODY TALKS ABOUT FATES WARNING ? So underestimated band...

  • This is the first Fates Warning song I ever heard. It was on one of the Best of Metal Blade Records cassettes back in the '80s. This song hooked me on FW and Arch and is still one of my favorite tracks.

  • theres no fucking way bruce dickinson could use his voice like this. USA USA USA USA USA

  • Take me away with you.

  • reminds me bruce dickinson voice´s from maiden..\m/... Fates warning Rocksssssssssssssss...great band i start to know

  • Thanks for uploading this album. Brings me memories from the 80's, when I had long hair. This was one of my first albums. This is my favorite Fates Warning song.... Salutations!

  • If the American Music execs had any sense, they would promote this kind of American music rather than that watered-down horse-shit that passes for music today... Pardon my English.

  • man ive always heard about this band but never gave them a listen. Fuck this is good metal!

  • If you disliked this song go suck your moms cock , your fuckin retarded

  • These guys had some cool album covers. Even the more "lame" No Exit cover was cool to me. Reminded me of Wolfenstein 3D.

  • the re issue cover looks so lifeless, the fancy the blue one.

  • sounds like Iron Maiden to me...

  • 2:37 it's a great change...Metal Blade from 80's . I was 17 when i had this song from the album " the best of the metal blade" 1985. Fates warning was confused by Iron Maiden that time.

  • Honestly one of the greatest metal songs ever.

  • John Arch, I fucking love you.

  • @dokkiro Yr not alone partner! I still can't put the valume down when I put one of my old vynal metal records on. Why would we want to. Rock On /,,/

  • 3:59 minute, such a fucking great feeling!! The best part of the song. It really makes you love metal forever and reminds you this song was made with a deep dose of heavy metal feeling. Amazing!!!

  • @LeonardoVala : I completely agree. I love that metal feeling with melodicism in the music and vocal harmonies. After all these years, that specific part at 3:59, still makes the hair on the back of my neck raise up. Metal forever!!

  • @vindude1968 Oh man you aren't kidding about the hairs. For me it's goosebumps all over...it's my favorite part of the song for sure!!!

  • @LeonardoVala I completely agree! RIght when it goes into the "in the first is a young boy..." part. Friggin' LOVE it. I loved this band... was disappointed when John Arch left.

  • @LeonardoVala I agree as well -- I LOVE the whole "In the first is a young boy..." part. My favorite prog/metal band from that era -- such a shame John Arch left. Heard some of his solo stuff years later, and it just wasn't the same.

  • @darrelwylde.Dear friend, In fact, the whole song is great, not only from 02:23 to 03:15 part, which is also magnificent. What I was trying to say was that in 3:59 minute is where everything (specially vocal harmonies which create a wonderful heavy metal atmosphere) brings together perfectly creating a higher level of power and feeling. I hope you´ll understand it. You should take a look of the other comments. There are five people who agree with me. Sorry, but you lose this time.

  • @LeonardoVala loose/ what does that mean ? just because 5 ppl agree doesn't mean that is the best part, i agree with you the whole song is great but i just don't like that melo part, no offense of course, when it comes to "what you like and what i like etc" there is no right or wrong, it would be boring if all have same taste of music... i just like the darker parts of theur songs or the part "take me away." the vocals are amazing, we don't agree on that but we still love the same song..

  • @darrelwylde. Congratulations, talking is the only way to agree on many topics. Probably we were referring to different things. I have mainly focused on the music, because of the fact that I´m a metal musician, but I have almost never focused on the lyrics. I guess you mean the words. Well, anyway there also great dark parts in this song. You just said ¨the vocals are amazing¨, that´s why I chose 3:59 minute because of the magnificent blend of voices. Special greetings from Ecuador

  • @LeonardoVala yeah i know what you mean men, i am a musician aswell , greetings from montevideo, un abrazo amigo.

  • @darrelwylde. Próximamente voy a Paraguay.

Martin.

  • Fates warning. Joan Arc. I'm not so sure why I never get sick of these oldies. I've been banging my head rockin to the same music for close to 30 years now. I'm almost afraid that I'll be grey, old, with long hair still collecting mad antiques like Elvis P. M. Monroe or James D fools.

  • Definitely a classic metal song!!! It reminds me my first steps on metal when I was only 15. (20 years ago) At least for me......the best heavy metal song ever heard!!! Amazing!!!! Special greetings from Loja (Ecuador).

  • classic fates.......love it and all

  • To me, Arch sounds like a cross between Bruce Dickinson and Kai Hansen.

  • @Andytheminstrel To me, Arch sounds like a cross between John Arch, and John Arch.

  • @Lengsel7 Very witty, actually I think it's more like a cross between Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson.

  • vocals remind me a bit of Geoff Tate.

  • @XombieLejon66 vocals remind me a bit of John Arch.

  • WOW!! this band is freakin awesome. its like a mix with iron maiden

  • Fates rules, musical magicians

  • This band deserves a lot of more recognition.

  • this sounds like something iron maiden would make. i lke that. def have to look into these guys.

  • @patrickjune1994 Funny you mentioned them cause I believe they made two songs called Fates Warning and The Apparition

  • @Haloman777 i looked in to they do have them as songs. i have to say i didnt think of it. guess inm not as good a fan as i thought i was hahahahahaha. guess that comes from listening to alot of stuff. with variations in type.

  • Both CD's, Awaken the Guardian, as well as The Spectre Within are both unique in their way and part of a natural progression of the band. I also think that Fates Warning is a huge band that should be seen in their two eras as if they are two different bands, both of them quite good.

I like John's era better, since you cannot find any other band at all doing what they did, specially because of John's creativity and prowess. Tose CDs are for me two pillars in my heavy metal formation.

  • Alot of hardcore fates fans liked johns voice so much that they really quit listening to fates after ray took over.

  • They would of gone alot farther with john, but he had to leave for personal reasons. Ray Balderama which is his real name was good, but never could match up to john. At the time when metal music was gonna explode with john they would of been real popular. I'm from s.a. i see ray around alot and from talking to him he always tried his best.

  • Oh...just the way John starts singing at 4:00...I get goosebumps every time and always have since 98 when I first heard this CD....yeah I know I was kinda late on it...

  • im 40 years old and think ray is a pussy ....go john

  • Such a great, great underrated classic.

"I want to know what's deep within, take me away aaAAAaahh!"

    just Incredibly epic..

I guess the reason many metal fans abandon classic Fates is because of John Arch's intricate way of singing.

I got into Fates Warning through their excellent release "Awaken the guardian".

I've been a fan ever since.

Check out the songs "Valley of the Dolls" and "Fata Morgana" from that album. You won't regret it..

  • The greatest song in the world! :)

  • iron maiden-ish..

    sounds frekin sick

  • dude my dad told me to check tese guys out they fucking rock

  • Since i rediscovered this album its mostly what i listen to for a whole 2 months now!

    Classic!

  • still rocks...

  • This is the greatest prog. metal song of all time.

  • FATES WARNING ROCKS \m/ (*.*) \m/

  • I finally found it! I borrowed this audio tape with various artists from my uncle and had this song in... I just couldn't remember the artist's name or title and it was stuck in my head for like a decade! Damn I had no idea Fates Warning were so fuckin awesome!

  • makes the back of my neck hairs stand up

  • the power of this fuckin band its mesmerising

  • Classic!!!! Definitely prefer the John Arch era of the band, he sounded similar to Bruce Dickinson at times I thought.

  • EPIC

  • YYYYEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Discovering more the band: Nothing to waste!

  • These lyrics... geez. Mailed directly to the heart. They are fantastic.. I love the whole mirrors symbolism. Beautiful.

  • i may listen to this song like 20-30 times day!john arch has a great voice

  • NO REFLECTION AT ALL!!!!

Awesome epic power metal. I love John's epic vocals.

  • FATES WARNING=great musicians=great songs=GREAT BAND!!!!

  • Wow, Wolfgang, I know your a fellow metalhead but I would say that most people familiar with the John Arch era of Fates Warning and the Ray Alder era will say they much prefer John Arch. Ray's vocals are cool but John Arch did something unique in that he used his voice as a meodic instrument. In many songs he would create a melody line doubling vocal harmonies while the guitars vamped on a chord progression. Anyway I'm glad you think the song is epic! Keep It Metal! \m/

  • Yeah you're right. Most do prefer it but there's something sickening about his voice for me and this is coming from a huge fan of US power metal and King Diamonds early vocals...

Something about Arch reminds me of a little kid non stop whining and I much prefer Alder's voice...different strokes for different folks I guess..

  • Right on Wolfgang. I completely understand your side of the issue as well. BTW your channel is pretty cool with so many awesome uploads. Even Forced Entry. I was in a band called Forced Entry in CT back in the 80's and our band got into a "war" with Forced Entry in Seattle over the name. They won! LOL. They were better anyway. See ya!

  • @vindude1968 If only Arch had joined Dream Theater. That wouldve been incredible.

  • @proggoth I'd rather he didn't, really. Arch is fucking awesome but he's not right at all for the kind of band DT are, or the kind of band that FW became, for that matter.

  • @endlessintertwined You may be right but it beats not hearing him at all.

  • @proggoth Have you heard his solo EP he did a few years ago with Portnoy and Matheos? It's really short but it's absolutely epic.

  • @endlessintertwined Yes i have. Progressive stuff.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila Arch rules, Wolfydude.

    Have a nice day.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila

I just now listened to alder trying to sing this song live. After which I have major trouble seeing how anyone can prefer Alder over Arch.

  • @tom5coat Actually quite a few people I've seen over time dislike Arch. Arch has more vocal ability than Alder sure, I can hear that, but Arch's tone is too sickening for me and many others to enjoy.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila

I guess I'm not hearing the sickening tone you are describing. When I compare them, I'm hearing arch as the better sound.

  • @vindude1968

I like alder better, but I still love the cds with Arch

  • @vindude1968

Uh.....Dude.....creating melody lines over chord progressions is one of the most basic elements of singing. How is that unique?

I think what makes John Arch unique is that he was a true counter-tenor. Very rare.

    Ray Alder wrote better lyrics.

  • @intervalkid

Ray Alder never wrote lyrics for Fates Warning (except on Monument, I believe). Matheos wrote APSoG, I believe, which has the best lyrics of any post-Arch FW album.

But really, they never came close to Arch's gift with imagery.

  • @oooooooooorly

I don't know what you mean by "APSoG". Anyway, I remember now that Matheos and the other guitarist wrote most of the stuff on "No Exit" and "Perfect Symmetry". I stand corrected. Now did John write the lyrics he sang?

Nonetheless I like the lyrics on "No Exit" and "Perfect Symmetry" better.

  • @intervalkid

John Arch did indeed write the lyrics for the albums he sang on.

APSoG is A Pleasant Shade of Gray, their 1997 album. Really difficult album to get into, but superb nonetheless. Great concept.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila i perfer alder is voice as well but i wouldnt go that far

  • Yukon and Mike...I was there as well..I live in SA and grew up loving FW. This song Joe Anthony played quite a bit on KISS. I loved the John Arch era of Fates Warning.

  • yukons95 we need to talk. I'm frm sa and i saw f/w many times. Shook john archs hand at sunken gardens back on the a/t guardian tour. when they opened up for Q/R on the Rage for order tour. Saw them when they opened for Dream /T at the Majestic.....

  • i was there, i saw them very early at the cameo theatre a few times. actually a buddy of mine promoted alot of bands here in s.a. alder was at a get together a few weeks ago that i could not make. i still give him shit about john kicking his ass!!LOL!!!

  • 'just vastness filled with stars upon stars'. i'm not sure john arch got the writing credit he deserved. awaken the guardian has some of the finest lyrics music will ever know. i remember listening to it constantly but not being able to decipher his lyrics because his phrasing is so unique...

  • Classic! Loved this song when I was growin up

  • Me too. And I still love this song. Never gets old!

  • because i see that they think this older kind of metal kicks ass! even the guitar work is awesome!!!

  • i grew up listening to fates back in the 80's. i really think john had or has the best fucking voice over anyone in any kind of rock! i was fortunate to see them many times here in san antonio wi th john! i also knew ray very well which his name was really ray balderama, which he changed to alder just to make it sound more into the rock thing! sorry but after john left i really stopped listening to fates. i am glad some newcomers have heard this music,

  • This is some of the best metal ever recorded! Todays metal like shadows fall and unearth fucking sucks.

  • i quiet listening to fates after rays 3rd attempt. john come back !!

  • im new to this type of music and i love it so im looking for band sugestions please.

  • Fates Warning is one of the founding fathers of progressive metal. Other bands and CD's to check out are:

Dream Theater: "Images and Words" Savatage: "Hall of the Mountain King"

    Into Eternity: "Scattering of Ashes"

Iced Earth: "Framing Armageddon" check out the song Ten Thousand Strong. Awesome! Let me know what you think.

  • SAnctuary " Into the mirror Black " and "Refuge Denied"...Mystic Force "Eternal Quest" ...Queensrcyhe " Operation Mindcrime" and "Warning". Helstar " Nosferatu", Solitude Aeturnus " Beyond the crimson Horizon", Fates Warning "Awaken the Guardian" , CAndlemass ' Epicus Doomicus MEtallicus", Heir Apparent " One Small Voice" and many more:)

  • You forgot to mention "No Exit" by Fates warning...one of the best pieces of music ever recorded of ANY genre.

  • Symphony X and Adagio are two bands to add to the other lists.

  • Keep surfing You Tube! You'll find an array of metal.

    BTW, KEEP THE FAITH!!

  • This is the first time I have heard this band, even though I had heard of them, I just never listend to them because I thought they were like those bands that screamed and I was just not into that. I like to hear medolic/melodic classical souding groups that u can actually understand the lyrics. Wow was I wrong about Fates Warning. Love it.

  • Right on, mettall1981! I'm glad you enjoyed this song. Check out the rest of the album "The Spectre Within" from Fates Warning that I posted. You'll love it!

  • dickinson is great live his voice is breaking a bit now tht hes older but hes still epic, never heard this guy live

  • RIGHT FUCKING ON!!!!!!

  • Yay!!!!!!!!!!!

  • fuck yea love the metal...

  • I need to get this damn album.

    Kick ass band.

  • Undoubteadly this is the best heavy metal song from all the times. I´ve been looking for it for long, but thanks to you I´ve been able to listen to it again. What a great song!!, the most emotive part on 3:59 - 4:00 minute.

  • dam love that intro! awesome jam.

  • best song from Fates warning...maiden must be envy!!!

  • fucking awsome....true metal

  • Man, this is something that Iron Maiden would like to play.

  • In fact, Harris with Dinckinson composed another "The apparition", too. But it's different, of course.

  • Fuckin' beautiful song

  • 2:38...That's what I call "fucking cool man!"

  • Yeah! no doubt It's a great song, man...I recomend you this one: "confused" from Death Angel (USA)or "mad butcher" from Destruction (Germany). The best blade and thrash metal ever.

  • Best intro ever! John Arch's voice sounds so pleasant to hear!

...Need to buy ''The Spectre Within'' soon!

  • one of the few local bands from my home state that is actually good

  • John Arch is the one singer I wish I could sound like above all others. Amazing range, control, timbre, etc. :-)

  • this

  • Yeah - I've been an Arch fan since the 1st album. Love him, hated when they let him go. But Ray is great in his own right.

But in regard to how great a vocalist John was, listen to the demos, and the LIVE versions... they are less than desirable in many places. That's the beauty of being in a studio - you can redo, redo, redo til you get it right.

My fave vocalist = Bruce Dickinson. Stronger voice than Arch. 'Nuff said.
