  • What an omen, this song. What a catastrophe the depression, no safety nets, no IRAs, no FDIC. My grandparents and thier generation knew it very well, though they weren't in the bread lines or soup kitchens. My grandmother would give the hobos who came to the kitchen door coffee and sandwichs. People helped each other then. If this happened now, I fear it would be pure anarchy. Our standard of living is too high for our wallets. Grandpa didn't like credit and told me to pay cash for everything.

  • @sauroid1 SPOT ON!!!! Grand dad hated the banks and alway kept a good amount of cash handy and hated to owe anyone anything. If the NRA weren't formed there may have been a revolt. I question whether many Americans realize how devastating the Great Depression was to the majority our citizens. If world war 2 hadn't occured, the depression could have lasted until the mid1940s. We came damned close to total economic collapse, if the other shoe drops I fear there could be anarchy.

  • the xylaphone reminds me of the flintstones

  • How ironic that this song was originally released shortly before the stock market crash in 1929.

  • That's some brilliant playing!

  • I'll be playing this when that sorry excuse of a president (0bama) gets the royal boot!

  • @TheDocinOC Amen!

  • @louiscaponecchia

words of wisdom...who taught you that one...your gay aussie buddy..?....brilliant reply..you must have really delved deep into your knowlege of semantics to pry that out of your chemically lobotimized gourd.

  • so nice !!!

  • For all those who would put a political slant to this song - it was originally written for a 1930s semi-comedy film "Chasing Rainbows" about drunks, bootlegging, and Prohibition. The song celebrated the repeal of the amendment (which didn't actually happen until a few years later - repeal was a major plank of the Democratic presidential election of 1932.) The song was so popular it became a theme song for the Dems, but that is maybe because it is so optimistic.

  • howerd dean ? he never took down a moose, field dressed it, cooked and ate it !

she is a better man most of US !

  • @Astroptx You do realize that is a bunch of crap, right?

Read the Vanity Fair articles, you idiotic lemming. Palin has never hunted and she hopped out of an RV for that photo op. Dean is so much more intelligent than Palin by so many magnitudes that I feel a little sorry for Palin, but for people like you who take anything you hear as the truth, real facts like that must not matter.

  • He looks like Robert Maxwell in the photo

  • The restoration of America has begun.

  • Scott brown is 2 points ahead in MA, I'll be humming this song all the way to the special election.

  • Two points ahead? You mean its a DONE DEAL.

    I'll be humming it, too.

    GOD BLESS AMERICA.

  • how's that hope-ey, change-ey stuff workin out for ya?

  • @dans1120 Just fine, I didn't elect Scott Brown to vote in lockstep with republicans as Coakly claimed he would. I'm pleased he is pissing off the insane Glen Beck/tea party wing of his party.

I expect this post to get a lot more thumbs down then my last one... but I really don't care. In politics being unpopular is a sure sign of being right.

  • You know, you're right, I was really expecting him to be a crazy lockstep Republican, but he turned out to be pretty reasonable. Sorry about the Palin quote, I figured you were one of the nuts. :)

  • @dans1120 Palin is the Howard Dean of the right, following her and the tax protesters lead is a sure way to see Obama elected to a second term.

When the healthcare debate becomes an argument between "reform healthcare or everyone will die" vs "don't reform healthcare or they will use it to kill you" it bodes ill for any proposal. The voters have no one to blame but themselves for electing incompetence. As it is I feel fairly secure in my choice this time.

  • I think this is one of the happiest sounds ever put on record. What would make it even more enjoyable would be to have the film of Teddy Brown performing this one, with that 300 pounds moving at flank speed to make this great music. Seismographs were probably going off all over town during this recording.

  • yes your right!!!

this should be the theme song in 2012!

  • FDR RULES.

  • I hope Obama's years will be Great as Well.

  • xilophone at 0:46 its incredible!!!!!!!!!

  • Hooray for President OBAMA!!!

  • Obama will be the cancer that will heal this nation.

  • how ironic.

  • Put 'Bammy up as No. 5 on Rushmore !!!

  • @sherzig

your sick ...give it some time and youll be singing Deustche land uber alas

  • @sherzig Too bad for America! He sucks!

  • makes me want to run out and sell apples on the sidewalk . thanks so much . wonderful

  • Sorry Michael, I don't have that recording, but have a few other Broadcast 12's of Harry Bidgood.

  • Another Rarity. John Thorne I usually associate with Roses of Picardy or A Sergeant of the Line!.

  • Mic33george inspired me to upload this track, when he uploaded a clip from Elstree Calling.

  • And Jack Hylton recorded an awesome, richly orchestrated version in 1930 (listen on the official Hylton site).

  • Happy days are here again... right you are, with all the excellent songs you have posted today! I didn't know his particular version and it is one of the best I've heard.
