Guys like Rory and Hendrix would think everyone was fucking stupid for arguing over all this trivial "who said what" and "who was better" shit. People can't just shut the fuck up and enjoy good tunes can they!
Had I known when I had a chance to see him. Dam Commercial radio I grew up in Festus Missouri I really though KSHE was a good station. They must have hated the Irish we only heard a few Thin Lizzy songs and Country Mile from Rory. Thank God for youtube.
@bornwithoutwarning I have researched into the matter with conformation from even Hendrix' relatives that the rumour is false. Just google it and you'll find out
Its a great story but Rory only released his first solo album a year after Jimi died in 1970.
Jimi was asked in 1969 Television interview how it felt to be the greatest guitarist in the world and he said-"How about the greatest guitarist sitting in this chair".
@capetown99 The quote supposedly comes from a Rolling Stone article before Hendrix died. I don't have that issue so I can't tell you if it's true or not. I'm betting you don't have that issue either.
Taste was kicking around London in the same years that Hendrix was. And both Hendrix and Rory played Isle of Wight Festival, 1970.
I don't have the article. But I have been a Hendrix fan for the last 25 years and I saw Rory Gallagher play live in 1984 in Belfast. I met Hendrixs bass player Noel Redding in 2001 and have also met Gallaghers bass player Gerry McEvoy. I'm not saying for definite Jimi never said it, but like a lot of things regarding Hendrix, the way he died, the drugs he took, people just seem to add these things on as if its historically accurate.
Never has a fender strat been connected so much to a person's soul and emotions as with Rory. Loved seeing him live, he just loved playing, instead of the obligatory final encore, Rory just seemed as though he wanted to play all night. A true blues/rock legend.
Is he 'better' then other artists listed by previous posters - or just different. There are many, many excellent guitar players all over the world - they're all "great" in their own way...IMO no 'one' is better then another....
Ya'll can have yur Clapton's ,Beck.Vai, i'll stick with Gallagher for he is the best i've come across bar none he's totally in control of that guitar makes it sing luv luv luv it
Rory was absolutely fantastic, how anyone could dislike this song is beyond me the riffs and chord are unreal, a true legend, it's kinda amasing how his personality was like that of Hendrix they were both down to earth and rather modest and shy.

@MrNakedallthetime Shut the fuck up. Here, that's as close as I could get. Come closer if you want more lovin.
You're just randomly patching famous names together. Besides, they're not playing in the same league, Blackmore and Moore are whimpy pop guitarists, known for the wrong reasons.
@minglifoo33 I'm not "randomly" patching names. All the artists I mentioned played Stratocasters. I am a guitar player that has played longer than you have and my experiences with the above players is alot more than you think. "Highway Star" is a wimpy pop song? "Parisenne Walkways" too?" Hendrix played pop too like "Wild Thang" You sound like a complete musical idiot. Come up with some proper criticism or go to hell.
@MrNakedallthetime Not as intense as Gary Moore? Gary Moore is the Kenny G of the guitar. Rory is John Coltrane. Bluesy like Ritchie Blackmore? Blackmore was the least bluesy of the British guitar greats. You make no sense.
@LilReaper608 I first saw Rory at the cream farewell concert and he had it then. Played little else until his death. Believe it's now in the hands of his brother
How could 17 people give this a thumbs down? This was my first viewing of this particular version of one of my favorite RG tunes, and it may be the best version yet. I have commented elsewhere that Gerry Mac never got his proper due as a bass player. He's moved to Nine Below Zero when RG got to sick to do a regular tour. As to RG being the best electric blues player ever, no argument from me. However, that leaves out just how brilliant he was on his Martin and his National. The man WAS the blues
I was about to give you a thumbs up, as I was in 1000% agreement with everything you said, U-N-T-I-L you got to Skydog--- No way, absolutely NO WAY! The combination of Duane on guitar (the BEST blues guitarist EVER) and Gregg's VOICE( the BEST white blues singer on planet earth). There's just NO WAY!! However, I also agree with the person who said that American radio seem to just blow him off. But fear not, his great talent will slowly bring people around.
@jackgingeranderic Clapton is the most over-rated player ever. He hasn't done shit since Derek & the Dominoes. I hated that Muzak version of Layla... After Midnight too.
anyone have the entire concert? i once saw a video of bad penny from the same show.. i loved it and this is also great.. great sound great athmosphere, everything perfect... please i need the entire show.. anyone? i'd pay for it... i especially want the bad penny song in good quality. it isn't available in youtube anymore... please help.
On July 5,1974 I went to see Eric Clapton in Columbus,Ohio...he was so high he had to be helped out onto the stage and left after 3 songs...a few months later Rory came to town...he was probably just as high as Eric but played for over 2 hours...better than Eric...better than Duane...that's all there is to it...and I'll say it ...better than Stevie Ray!!!!!
@bartlettohio rory was not into drugs per se, he may well have been extremely drunk though, may he rest in peace, the best guitarist there ever was in my opinion anyway
@bartlettohio haha. that's good to know that he's still that of a true blues man even if he was high playin' a concert. but they have different styles in playin blues cuz they're not the same person. Him, stevie, and the other blues rockers, you can't say either one is better than the other. they walk the same path though. the path of righteous, awesome blues!
i saw him at self aid gig july 1986 ,and its an experience to witness the notes go right to your soul ,pure amazing talent ,who did it cause he loved and had a joy to his own sound, which is rory gallagher, the ballyshannon man, will forever rock in the the ears of millions, who respect the legend on the strings
I was lucky enough to see Gallagher live many times when he was at his peak, live he was at his best, he just loved playing whereas most acts did their scheduled set and then pissed off Rory just carried on playing - one of the all time great guitarists who always put everything into his performance - a true great, sadly missed
When he met Barney Kessel he was most humbled. Kessel told him he was fascinated by RG's tunings and fingerings. I agree he was the most adventurous guitar player. I respect his insistence on avoiding fame via his "no singles" rule very much. Sadly he remains one of the great least known treasures of this or any other guitar/blues/rock player. I love this song because it is also true of me... lol. We must also remember that his simply chose to let his music speak for itself.
@LabelBob To the contrary, Brian May has Rory Gallagher tone and feel - May saw Gallagher playing live with Taste and asked Rory about his setup, which was, of course, a Vox AC30, that guitar in the video and a treble booster between the guitar and the amp. May got hold of a second-hand AC30 and a similar booster and hooked 'em up to his hand-made guitar, leading to a lot of similarity between their sounds...
...anyway, yeah, my point is, Gallagher inspired May, not the other way around :P
Wow! This dude is doing things on a guitar I've never heard before, like 6:06. Shit. He's got kind of a Robin Trower tone, but he's definitely his own man on that Strat. Thanks for posting. I'll be listening again.
Christ, this annihilates the studio version on Top Priority. Pity he never recorded a studio album that got anywhere near capturing the intensity and energy of his live shows. Really he was a musicians musician, from the plaid shirts to playing the most beautiful beat up strat in history he couldn't give a toss about commercial success although he sold about 30 million albums which makes it even more baffling that he isn't better known outside of the insular world of guitar players.
That man was just MADE to play guitar. Really impressive... More I listen Rory, more I wish I could be at one of his show. I guess I was born too late for that.
Long life to the blues, to the guitar, and the RNR !
mean as gun. you got me home hell a few times in the 70's, harti thrashed irish tour musta worn a few tapes out back in the day. lost a good one here eh
Gallagher consistently took chances onstage. He always stepped to the edge of his abilities--and then took one more step. Hendrix was another that always pushed the boundaries. I never saw Clapton do that, even in Cream.
I went to the Blind Faith Concert in Seattle and this band opening came on and blew my mind. ...made Blind Faith looking hella bored and in great pain. Went out and bought their albums...some dude named Rory Gallagher playing Catfish
Ah, but the buzz was that when Clapton & company formed the first supergroup Blind Faith, Rory and his band Taste were the opening act, and they consistently stole the show - ha!
@SupernalOne I went to the Blind Faith Concert in Seattle and this band opening came on and blew my mind. ...made Blind Faith looking hella bored and in great pain. Went out and bought their albums...some dude named Rory Gallagher playing Catfish
and he does all this without a pedal!

Someone once asked Jimi Hendrix how it felt to be the world's greatest guitarist and he said "I don't know. Why don't you ask Rory Gallagher"?

How good is this? Fantastic number from a guy who was certainly one of the all time greats - Rory on, your memory will never die.

Gallagher consistently took chances onstage. He always stepped to the edge of his abilities--and then took one more step. Hendrix was another that always pushed the boundaries. I never saw Clapton do that, even in Cream.

Ah, but the buzz was that when Clapton & company formed the first supergroup Blind Faith, Rory and his band Taste were the opening act, and they consistently stole the show - ha!
