  • Robert Plant does the best version of this song EVER. Take a listen and respond.

  • @ZZOSO1000

The Robert Plant version is more of a straight cover... a very good one. This sounds more like a cover of the 1983 This Mortal Coil re-imagination which is beautiful.

  • Pretty good. But you can't top Bryan Ferry's ultra-cool version on "Olympia".

  • Expected better but who can really top This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren "Cocteau Twins" - A. no one.

  • @ZeitgeistAreWe Robert Plant tops everyones version hands down, This Mortal Coil is a very close second.

  • This one's a bit overdone I think. But to each their own. I like Liz Fraser's the best

  • This Mortal Coils is by far the best version. I have to admit that I am surprised that Sinead's isn't. Her vocal talent in Foggy Dew would suggest otherwise..

  • I feel like Buckley's version is a rough diamond, beautiful, unpolished, raw. The mortal Coil's version is achingly beautiful. Every time I listen to it it sends shiver to my bones and I feel overrun by despair, nostalgia and melancholia. I feel humble and small. When I listen to O'connor's version, It gives me hope, like I have watched a good movie and the character will move on to their lives. I listen to all three and love all three of them. Let us find beauty everywhere and enjoy the music.

  • It's not great, and like pretty much everybody, she gets the words wrong. That's also my criticism of the Liz Fraser (This Mortal Coil) version and why it CANNOT be the definitive. There are lots of mistakes in the words as written above and also on the Sinead recording (which are also different from what you've written above) and they don't improve on the original. It's just lazy as it's not that hard to find the right ones and do the poem justice.

  • @didleybopp Why does it have to be absolute? Why does it have to be definitive and the words exact? Isn't it a mark of the utmost respect that more that 35 years after his death a myriad of artists are lining up to pay respect to Tim Buckley by performing this song?

  • agree it's one of the better versions, but personally think the This Mortal Coil version (same people in the vid as The Cocteau Twins, and I never quite worked out the difference) is more sad and haunting to listen to.

  • @madphilgreenballs MAD, the difference between This Mortal Coil and Cocteau Twins are many. Cocteau Twins was a band of 3 elements: :Liz, Simon and Robin. They are ina lable called 4AD. the owner, Ivo watts-Russell decided put together in a project called THIS MORTAL COIL many people from many bands who had signed wtih 4AD. For a few years he managed to have different people singing together to do amazing albuns. Hope you understand the differences.

  • @hebeks thanks. If I hadn't been so lazy, I should have looked it up myself. Thanks for the explanation.

  • i do not want to offend someone but...........

I have heard all versions of this song (which I really love) and this one is the best one (the others are unbelievly great too but..).

Is mysterious, hauntig, so sad and gives you very wierd feelings. I mean Sinead really sounds like endless ocean!!!!!

  • I love Sinead O'Connor but Elizabeth Fraser is more subliminal.

  • @EspJulio Sorry - IMO Sinead sounds much better. To each their own. . . Peace.

  • Justin Adams guitar, wow! good choice, Sinead!

  • Beautiful. Haunting lyrics.

  • très belle interprétation...

  • Se s the only singer beside the original who can sing this song supergood!

    Beceause she understands!

  • @ramses30277 the original was Tim Buckley (jeff's father) but the cover by elizabeth frazer on the This mortal coil album, "it'll end in tears" is sublimely beautiful

  • brilliant version of a brilliant song

  • Amazing!

  • this is sappy and sounds like muzak

  • Love this version!

  •  ;;were you hare when i was fox;;;

is this lyrics???i dont think so....anyway amazing version by Sinead

  • @chupakampra I wondered about this line, too. It's the original line by Buckley, however. I think the Cocteau Twins changed it to "were you here when I was full-sail". What it meant originally was, "were you the one being pursued".

  • This is amazing...

  • love this version too and charolotte martins

  • Another beautiful version of this great song!

  • Yes this is from her new album "Home" ...

  • Lovely. :)

  • Where is this from? Does she have a new album?

  • The original Tim Buckley

and another one : This Mortal Coil

make the song famous . This one from Sinéad it's nice but i am

stil waiting for the most best cover of this song . This Mortal Coil is coming close

  • @Schildjer try a listen to john frusciante's version. it's very slow. i think it can only be fully enjoyed if you really feel the revelation of having found the loved woman of your life and feel it running through your veins and everyday breathing.

  • Sheila Chandra recorded this one too. Quite a beautiful version

  • The Cocteau Twins / This Mortal Coil version will always be my favorite, but Sinead's take is indeed impressive.

  • i think she say { were you here when i was full sail } i could be wrong thats just what i here anyway beautiful song.

  • @secretdestroyer87 You're right, the correct lyrics ARE "Were you here when I was full sail". :)

  • Clearly inspired by the version by This Mortal Coil. And all the better for it!

  • Intense, amazing version, shame about the pops and crackles
