i race on the Tay in Dundee and on saturday was sailing in a regatta in a Feva XL with my younger brother, we come in about 20 stone and it was blowing 22 knots gusting about 26, got the genikar up at one point and overtook a kestrel flying a spinikar!! we were bloody rocketing!! and about the 'white caps' your not taking into account the wind direction, if its southerly in the Tay its almost flat but can still be blowing in excess of 15 knots..THESE ARE GREAT BOATS XD (we went faster though) :P
There seems to be a fair amount of discussion about the wind strength. This was 1st December 2007. Chiment, only 2 miles from here, was showing 30kts.
this is like 15-20 knots max, only a few white caps, i have been in 30 knot winds, and there are way more whitecaps, and the water is carried like spray on every little wave. I have also sailed a feva in gusting 25, with a reef sailed with 120kg onboard, this is ideal weight fully hiking with a reef. this is no way 30 knots. maybe 15-20.
ah the rs feva xl.....what a boat....easy to sail, cheap, very exciting in good wind, and is usable from about a combined weight of around 70kgs. I love them!!!!!!
i remember trying to sail a 17ft yacht in 45knt winds in aukland. was a total disaster! didnt work lol. we were 1 crew member short and the boat couldnt handle the wind. luckily it was an onshore wind so we ended up getting blown back to shore
For most part, crew should sit further still back on plane and helm should pull in main more. 1:15 onwards was perfect tho. (im in national feva squad)
surely the helm and crew should be sat 2gether? and from 1:15 onwards th boat is neve flat. and lets face it, the feva national squad is not exactly dificult 2 get into is it

not optimal feva sailing.. move back on plane !! and more in main sail.. -.-
fladfisk 4 years ago
exactly! tell bkvhjudg that!
jazzlover06 4 years ago
once i sailed in 36 kts. or like. but then the mast did bend a little to much with the gennaker, so we had to pull it down xD
fladfisk 4 years ago
Lol, granted! They should be together yes but near the beginning they're in danger of nose diving. The ending is good tho/
