The 2015 Lotus Elise will have DCT installed and that's when I will finally be able to drive an Elise. I freaking hate conventional manual transmissions.
you guys walk and talk like your professional race car drivers but i will tell you that if you buy this car with a DCT than you just ruin the point in having an M3. Any real, self respecting race car driver will choose the manual any day because they know that real cars like this are about the experience rather than getting from point A to point B.
Why spend $4,000 to have the car shift for you? i like BMW but if you want the M badge buy a DCT but if you want a real M3, get it with a stick....
hey.. i own a e92 m3 with dct, and you cant acually put it in park..you select neutral with the stick in the middle, and then when you turn the car off it automatically goes to a "P" or park settting. hope that helps
This is one of the WORST gearboxes i've ever tried. Yup, it's got dual clutch like DSG, S-Tronic and the others but...here's the thing. To make a fake manual sensation, this car won't move at all if you don't press the gas pedal. Strange, and if you're already on a roll, and wants to lift the throttle to let the car cruise freely, it will rev for engine brake and stops the car. Which is good for racing but incredibly annoying in real traffic situation. And that's in D-mode.
WTF are you talking about?I test drove one yesterday and the gearbox is great.
Sure you drove one mate? My M3 edition will arrive some time in Dec 09, ill put up a vid then and show you it doesnt engine brake hard when you lift off the throttle. And your quote, "doesnt move unless you give it gas" haha, what do you expect? it doesnt have "Creep" like most other gearboxs, but i like that, i dont want the car to move unless i press the accelerator pedal!
That's the whole point. It gives you a lot more control over your speed without having to bother with the brake pedal--just like a manual. It's not strange and it's not a "fake" sensation, that's just how the transmission is because here's no slushy torque converter, it's a positive connection with a clutch.
Does it really need (D) automatic mode? I mean there's no clutch pedal and all you have to do is forward to downshift and backward to upshift. I guess (D) is for the lazy.
yeah i love manuals, i also miss crank starting my car. forget manual, let technology do the work. soon enough tech will be better than humans. ask the worlds best chess players. can't fight it.
oh man how many gears they have in the modern car nowadays? I just only use the second gear to accelerate and seems my car cannot reach 140kph....the engine revs is too high...i use the first gear first then after it is broken i climb it to 2nd then after its broken then to 3rd...man i'm so high...n not low
I just actually know this stuff. Plus I had to do a reasearch project in english class and i choose to write one about the diffrent types of transmission.
I was a manual man all the way especially after using the SMG in my M6 and M5 but DCT wipes the floor with everything much smoother and faster than DSG but you'd expect that I guess.
yes, i've been watching videos about Volkswagen's DSG, people insist argueing with me and trying to convince me that manual is better than DSG or DCT .¬¬
i prefer automatic, because you get more confortable when you let the car do the dirty job ;)
BUT the true about manual gearboxes is that you loose important engine's rotation when you step on the clutch to shift. of course, with manual, you have 100% control of the car... but I don't have my Q7 for racing ;) even if i wish to race, i would never put a manual gearbox on it, NEVER :P

I believe the first dual clutch transmission was developed by BorgWarner. VW/Audi uses BorgWarner "DSG" or "S-Tronic" units. Their new 7-speed DSG/S-Tronic system is now in Euro Golfs.
I don't know where BMW gets their "M-DKG" trannys from, but I'm sure they didn't develop it in-house.
There are some German models such as Audi that I know giving both real Manual Transmission (you still have the clutch pedal) and paddle shift at the same time. Understand tha traditionalist will auto-response to the clutch pedal, so it's important for this feature to be added in...
but this time it's installed in a car with v8 high-rev engine with 420 bhp, up to 8,400 rpm, and 400 Nm of torque at 3,900 rpm. the new bmw m3 convertible. no crappy golf or lame audi tt... end of story. ;-)
the double clutch technology was first introduced in the VW Golf R32. Now its found in many VW and Audi Models with engines ranging from the 1.4 TSI up to the 3.2 V6 and some diesel engines.
The manual is rubbish in comparison, it's also clunky and heavy at lower speeds. The 4.8 0-60 is only achievable if you have absoloutly perfect gear changes and in optimum conditions. On the other hand, 4.6 seconds can be easily achieved with the M-DCT.

It's great that BMW has implemented a dual clutch transmission but they did not build the M-DCT, Getrag did. BMW is an engine company.

the name for all wheel drive varies by manufacture. BMW calls it x drive. MB calls it 4matic audi calls it quattro

true because the -ing represents the action as it occurs.
