Whoever made this video...this is beautifully mastered! Wow! The imagery in sync with the beat....and an excellent remix with Dinah! Wow Wow! A nice surprise!
Thank you so much for posting this classic song/kick-ass dance track remix from Verve! That voice! See also Delaney & Bonnie's "When the Battle Is Over" - Peace. DAVEDJ
this is a fuckin' dope-ass track--- it SLAMS. The vox are great, but what I love most is the rhythm track. I have this CD somewhere....it's great. "Feeling Good" is a standout along with this, which is why I bought it.
New technology doesn't change any human factor. Showing respect for your fellow humans is what really counts, and if you honestly believe that treating someone else's music that way is paying tribute to the people who are no longer here to have a say, then also you should realise that many people don't feel that way. That's all I'm saying.
@1clue I think you don't get it. Remixing IS subversive, the whole notion of authorship and ownership is being called into question. It's not about paying tribute; it is about re-contextualising. This vocal was lifted from a jazz track and put to a new-beat, and put onto 21str century dancefloors, where people who never heard about Dinah will think it's Thievery Corporation ! (or whoever mixed it)
That's libertating the productions of the past from both "collectors" and museums.
@anothercountyheard yeh yea what you said! hey fuck the past fuck the future we only have now.and this shizznit is NOW AS NOW COULD EVER BE yall see what im sayN? I think you do.
@1clue hey bra! I just did a seance and channeled the spirit of dinah and she says shut the fuck up.This is SO THE bomb son! Its more than that its bomOlicIoUs!!So take your little hate mind elsewhere.some OF US are trying to enjoy.
FWIW this thing has spun completely out of control. If Dinah or even anyone at all on the band were still alive to give blessing then I would have absolutely no hangup on it at all. I respect that Verve asked you to do it, I just don't like revisionism of someone else's music. No doubt you could perform your own rendition and give good credit too.
Mr Clue we did this remix on request from the Verve label who were hoping to make some money from their catalogue. Some of this money goes to Dinah's estate .Im quite sure that she would have loved that.If remixes like these introduce a younger generation to such golden talent thenthey may take the time to find out the original version.I respect that you dont like it thats fair enough ,however the reality is that everyone wins. The music lives on........
What's all the guff about original (dead) artists not liking musical development? You can seriously see Dinah Washington resisting the groove in this rework? The narrow mindedness of purism ensures narrow mindedness.
If you think I'm the only one who feels this way, just do an internet search on "Pat Metheny Kenny G" and give that article a read. Louis Armstrong is arguably one of the best Jazz musicians ever. Pat is arguably the best Jazz guitar alive and certainly better than any rock guitar player. Kenny G is so unskilled that most Jazz musicians refuse to call what he plays Jazz. Kenny G did this with a recording by Louis Armstrong, and there's no way Armstrong would have put up with it.
A cover is a tribute. Taking the actual recording and altering it substantively like this is plagiarism, and frankly it's illegal in the USA. Even if it weren't illegal it's in extremely poor taste to presume that the original artist would consent to have their work handled that way.
@1clue RE this comment ; how can you sleep at night with so much hatred inside.
Let me guess; you're a jazz purist who hate's sampleing, hates remix culture, feels that the misapproiation of recorded work is a sin against art.... you have to work hard and pay your dues learning to play your instrument, playing live, etc.
Sorry charlie, it's a brave new world and sampling has already revolutionized everything... you're just hung up on the past, man.Join in you'll hate less & love more !!!
A cover is when somebody takes the words and/or music of some other artist and performs it in their own style. This is an actual recording of an artist who is dead, altered to reflect some other artist's tastes and presuming to say that the original artist would have cooperated with that. Instead of altering the original in any artistic way, maybe they should have simply cleaned up the recordings and offered them again. I'm sure they could have gotten play time on popular stations and sites.
@1clue I Love Dinah, I do not think you are a hater! Nothing can compare with her version. Little Jimmy Scott did a cover of Sinead O'Connor's cover of Prince;s somg "Nothing Compares 2 U" I love Scott's the best. Maybe someone would disagree with me. You have a right to your own opinion! What;s the matter with everybody, This is America! You are alright with me 1clue.
@Bahrnanagenerala, In my entire collection I have exactly one track which is a dead peron's recording mixed in after the fact. Natalie Cole mixed a duet with her father, Nat King Cole. It's weird, but it's her dad. I have hundreds or possibly thousands of tracks where somebody covers the track of someone else, possibly a dead person. That's different. A good cover honors the original artist, and most artists perform the work of others even when they're the first performers of the piece.
@1clue I just cant understand your argument one bit. You say that a good cover honors the original artist? You decide that this isnt a good cover? The Verve remixed collection made a whole new generation discover Dinah Washington, Nina Simone and all the others from that era/record label.
So did this artist have consent of the original artist to modify her work this way? No, she's dead. This is disrespectful and tasteless. By doing this, the new artist claims the same status as the original, and IMO the original artist is much better. So it's as though she's sanctioning a lesser talent when in fact no sanctioning happened. This is theft.
This is creepy. It's not cool to modify performances of dead people, and especially not great performances like Dinah's -- It's all it should be. Is Verve falling under the spell of Kenny G?
I just heard it on "So, You Think You Can Dance?", and had to find it. I've found several great originals and remixes by being reminded of, or introduced to them by this great show. I may have to come up with a rou
