@hydroy1 Not to question your facts, but according to the Quo website, Pictures Of Matchstick Men was released in November 1967. Prior to being called Status Quo, they went through various names including The Spectres and The Scorpions. However, Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster did indeed meet in 1962 (Whilst they were still at school). This is on the History page of the SQ website.

None of them are playing their usual instruments, in fact Alan's playing a Fender, but by that point he'd normally use Kramer, and Pete's playing a Tama kit, when he always used Premier, but that "what the friggin' 'ell" look on Pete's face as the inflatable starts up; priceless.
This is the best....Quo are the best and should have been HUGE in America but unfortunately wasnt to be!! Just like they got nil airplay for their latest releases in Australia and all you ever heard was their 70,s hits all because of record company narcissism! Thats why in Oz I waited 20 years for them to play again on our shores but have seen every concert since and next year in march they are playing exclusivly I believe at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide and I am so there!!!
This band is only a one-hit wonder here in America. Their only US Top 40 hit is the almost Top 10 classic "Pictures of Matchstick Men" which many classic rock stations apparently forgot even existed. They had 30 fricking hits in their native UK including this single. This song & album sold poorly in America. What's wrong w/the picture that good groups like this can't even score multiple hits in America & others whose music is crap escapes 1 hit wonder status - no pun intended?!
BTW I was referring to most of the pop & hiphop crap from today. It's amazing how Avril Lavigne, Jonas Bros, Rihanna, Jordin Sparks, Leona Lewis, OneRepublic, Lady Gaga, NKOTB, Katy Perry & St!nk can score multiple hits in America & UK legends like Quo can only manage to get 1 dang hit!! If the Jonas Bros or any of the other above artists sang this it'd be an instant hit here. That's what's so screwed up about American music these days!!! "Down Down" despite its moderate airplay at the time on American rock radio fell short of hitting the Billboard Hot 100. In 75 they didn't chart songs that were strictly made for album rock radio. "Down Down" hit #1 in the UK but didn't chart in the US. They had 35 UK Top 40 hits vs only a couple of US charting singles. Source - The All Music Guide (which can be inaccurate.)
