  • Personally, I can't even listen to this. Johnny Cash did it to perfection WHICH Trent Reznor said himself that he could never perform this song like Cash and he wouldn't try! Props to Cash for being amazing and to Trent for his recognition of the late and great!

  • Yo you douchebags talkn SHiT about 'The Man In Black' coverin this song,..I bet my left ball that Trent Reznor was BLOWN AWAY, Amazed and FLATTERED that Johnny Cash wanted to cover HIS work.. That is an Honor among honors for newer musicians, an Icon like Johnny cash to be an admirer.. Plus like one comment said, "Johnny Cash, if any musician EVER lived a hard life this song epitomizes,..it was Johnny cash, he lived hardCore even for OUR times, but He did it when it was 'evil', the 50's&60's..

  • Comment removed

  • I cant think of a bigger honour of Johnny Cash using it in his way

  • Amazing song, but there's something wrong with the recording, the volume keeps shifting.

  • this song makes me cry :"(

  • @wolv20996 his wife died a few months after the video of hurt already been shot..

  • Trents version makes more sense being sung by him and not Cash because the meaning of the song and even lyrics themself make you feel trents emotional pain and regret from the sad shit that hes gone through in his past and how it scarred him and how he basically remembers all the trauma hes gone through, the lyrics are clear and really great. thats why i dont get why Cash used this song to cover as his last to sum up his life when the song is of a very sad and painful meaning

  • @epityepepep well i guess cash had his reasons to cover the song...and considering what a great man and musician he was it must've been a pretty good reason..

  • @epityepepep because he was distraught about the death of his wife and this song showed his pain he felt when his wife died

  • @epityepepep

Because Cash had a similar life of substance abuse and a very self destructive lifestyle.

  • @epityepepep

You don't think Johnny Cash felt similar pain?

  • So much pain in this song......

  • Johnny Cash verson is much better

  • @wwekristian there's a huge difference in saying what you like and what you recognize as talent. Do I really enjoy both versions, yes. I actually don't like one much more than the other. I enjoy singing cash's version more and maybe even listening to it a little bit more, but I recognize the talent in both individuals. Both artists have also heavily influenced other and the music industry as a whole because of that talent.

  • @wwekristian yes the original version truly sucks but credits for that awsome lyrics

  • god the audio on this vid is painful

  • @italicpigeon are you deaf? this is the best live version of the song

  • @PattyGilMo yea trent reznor is amazing, im just saying the audio recording makes it impossible to listen to

  • My favorite version of this song is Nine Inch Nails'

  • This version was gay!!!! Johnny Cash made it sound way better...Johnny Cash R.I.P.

  • @Biggrimmsta They're completely different. You like Johnny Cash more, and to be honest, I liked Cash's version better also. But this performance was COMPLETELY different from Cash's. This was more barebones: a man and a piano used to evoke emotion. Cash's version has a video, guitar, piano, and much more.

  • Comment removed

  • @Biggrimmsta Also, I'd recommend a vocabulary upgrade.

  • I cherish both versions ... Trent Reznor the composer and passionate performer and the one-and-onlyJohnny Cash who made the song his very own. Both so moving, so bitter, so beautiful ... one of my favorite songs ever. Thank You for both Versions of two wonderful artists.

  • HUNDRETH FTW

  • Johnny Cash's verson is much much more powerful than the orginal

  • @Quintus707 I get tired of watching this song or johnnys version, seeing comments on cashes that NIN is better than comemnts on trents version sayin johnny is better

  • @MetalDrummer776 don't blame me on that, I just saying my oppinion

  • Let me be frank. Leona can cover this if she wants, she doesn't have to have experienced the same shit just to sing it. I've never experienced a zombie invasion but hell, I sing Thriller all the time.

  • @Rosskiposski amazing!

  • oth of them sang it well. Trent wrote it for certain time in his life..and Johnny used it to discuss his whole life. Both are amazing and full of emotion. The version by Leona Lewis saddens me because it has now turned in to a pop ballad...with no emotion. She has a good voice but today's music needs to leave yesterday's alone...they dont have the soul and talent to sing it. I miss real music.

  • Leona Lewis did a cover of this song. I must say she did a fantastic job.

  • @mabst6 I agree

  • i didnt know who he was until i saw people bitching in the comments of cashes version

  • @HalfBreedWarrior5696 Your comment made me lose faith in humanity.

  • @HalfBreedWarrior5696 me too ahhaha

  • both great! shut up

  • I actually like this version better than the origional. Oh God, his voice gives me goosebumps.

  • @gschl1 okay jetzt weiß ich was gänsehaut in englisch heißt! danke

  • beautiful, and painful song. very open, vulnerable

  • Fuck johnny cash. I'm sick and tired of hearing his name every time Hurt is brought up. His cover isn't even all that good and doesn't hold a candle to the original.

  • @phantasmagoria000 You have no fucking ears then clearly.

  • @phantasmagoria000 It's not a sporting event. It's music you small minded knob; One of the most subjective things mankind takes part in, period.

Fuck Phantasmagoria. I'm sick and tired of hearing what music is good and what music isn't. Your comment isn't even all that good and doesn't hold a candle to reality.

  • Comment removed

  • @MisterModestMoose Take your blind johhny cash fanboyism elsewhere. You wouldn't drag on about Trent in a Joy Division, Soft Cell, Queen youtube comment box would?

  • @phantasmagoria000 I didn't even mention Cash, or Trent. (_ _ ) <-- Me with my face on my desk.

  • @phantasmagoria000 watch what you say son..

  • @phantasmagoria000 I actually agree with you. On Tumblr, I always search Trent Reznor. But it ALWAYS comes up with Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. It's always Johnny Cash. Nobody can sing this song better than Trent. Nobody could EVER put as much emotion into the song. People always say "Oh, Cash perfected the song!" I think even Trent said that. But it's still Trent's song to me, and it always will be.

  • @phantasmagoria000

    What do you know

  • If I could start again, a million miles away...

  • Man...how hard is it to acknowledge that both this version and Cash's version are amazing, moving versions? They both rock, and they both encapsulate the life of the performer.

  • For the first time in many years i feel like crying.. such a strong song..

  • he is a great man giving cash such respect saying this song became john's

  • are you trolls seriously bashing THE johnny cash? im a heavy music fan but im a MUSIC fan. i have enough musical knowledge and classical/theory training to know when someone sucks. both trent reznor and johnny cash are musical geniuses, not only within their own genres, but in overall music. if you really know what music really is, you would be able to recognize that.

  • whose song is this trent or who?

  • YOU! yes you hater! get a life! and go thumbs up to both versions.

  • Why don't people just throw in "(personal opinion)" at the the end of their Reznor/Cash comments? I'm cool with opinions, just don't act like your taste in music=statement of fact. Both versions are great in their own regard, but I like Reznor's better (personal opinion).

  • When somebody covers a song its because the song speaks to them about something they can relate it to, theres absolutly no rules to an individuals personal relevance with this song. no matter who sings it i'll always feel the same listening to it because of how it speaks to me, not because of the other persons impact on the song. Cash didn't make it go mainstream, he simply has a better voice and the song sounds better from him but its the song thats special, not the person. cunts!

  • Hurt has to be the only example in history where the cover version is actually superior.

  • @Cshizzle94 Not really... Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower was a cover that was much better than the original (by Bob Dylan).

  • who the hell cares if trent wrote the song? Its still a good song performed by both trent and johnny cash.

  • The Cash version is better as Cash has HUGE history................Known to millions generationally.

  • @Wutangspam yeah, just like NIN! lol check your info before posting...

  • Comment removed

  • guess i'll throw in my opinion, let me start out by saying that trent reznor is one of my top 5 favorite musicians of all time. i like the actual music more in his version, the piano gives it a haunting qualtiy, however i like cash's voice more in his version. overall both versions are absolutely amazing. its a tribute to how great both versions are when you see such a debate from the respective fans of each artist.

  • No its like saying iphonea better then androidbwhich is a lie but why I mean I didnt know wjohnnu was indistrial

  • You maggots you really dont understand the buisness I prefer both to be honest its like having cake and eating her I meam it

  • Lots of trolls lurking here. Anyway... I prefer this one. Can't beat the original.

  • no offense but i prefer the johnny cash version

  • jhony cash is better what is this

  • @1987host This is the man who wrote the song, performing it. Dumbass.

  • @1987host what jhonny cash can sing the song hurt better than its composer what!!!

  • who was the person who wrote this song jhonny cash version is way better

  • @1987host Trent Reznor, and that's your opinion, to me they're both equally good and equally powerful imo

  • trent reznor and NIN ftw <3 (:

  • Stop hating on Trent Reznor and Johnny Cash. They had respect for each other's work. TRENT SAYS IT IN HIS OWN WORDS.... Just youtube Johnny Cash - Hurt (Commentary by Trent Reznor)

  • Comment removed

  • How could trent have copied this from cash? This came out in 1994. No, offense to cash fans but im sure that they believe he wrote it only cause most of them didnt even know much about NIN. Before cash covered it did they even hear the original? But I bet NIN fans knew who cash was even before hurt. Shows you how closed minded some genres can be.

  • Compared to the original, Cash's cover has no emotion or impact on me at all. It just doesn't come close.

  • @zkrunner117 I'm guessing to each their own, cashes makes me shiver with goose bumps. This doesn't effect me :P.

  • @zkrunner117 same here! (:

  • Trent Reznor best defined Cash's version when he described his response to first seeing the video: "Tears started welling up. I realized it wasn't really my song anymore. It just gave me goose bumps up and down my spine. It's an unbelievably powerful piece of work. After he passed away I remember feeling saddened, but being honored to have framed the end of his life in something that is very tasteful."

  • @TenAC666DC I freaking agree big time! I just watched the Johnny Cash version after seeking it for years! And it caused ME to get teary-eyed! Glad to hear that Trent was affected the same way. If you just know Johnny Cash's life, then you know the significance of that song!

  • the only reason celebs die is because heaven needs em too..

  • @KUSHaPOTamus420 and theyve already gave us all they could so god takes back what is his..

  • So much pain in this song. It hurts him to even sing it. Written at the lowest point in his life.

    This song DEFINES his.

  • @nuss91 him

  • @nuss91 This just isn't Trent Reznor you singing about everyone. Everyone get's a low point.

  • its not a version, its the real song, cash covered the song, Hurt was written, produced, engineered, mixed and performed by trent reznor

  • I love thiis version. Think it´s better than Cash´s.

    Just a great song.

    <3

  • Btw I'm not hatin on any of the versions. I LOVE Johnny Cash AND NIN. Long live NIN R.I.P J.C

  • Trent Reznor wrote the original song... Johnny Cash made it better...

    Nine inch nails followed through...

Don't bother trolling to me cause I'll never come back to this thread again.

    .Period.

  • Esta canción fue escrita para que la cantara Johnny cash... Punto, Se dice que hasta el mismo Trent lloró cuando vio el video de Cash...

  • Oh and of course, shot has 2 be said about johnny cash.

This is the original, Trent deserves more respect than he gets from Cash fans because after all, if he didnt write this masterpiece, Johnny's cover wouldnt exist.

  • Makes me reflect on my own inadaquacies.

  • trent reznor did such a great job luv him

  • This version is shit.

  • @Freakof5FDP This is the original

  • @Freakof5FDP

this isn't a version fucking fuck - it's the original

  • People, just try enjoying one of the most personal songs ever written!!

  • @reign114 you know that they have to say that one is better then the other when in truth there both good in there own ways i love both of then and listen to both of them there is nothing wrong with either version and im stiching to that

  • Idiots. Trent never said Cash's version was better. And it's not. When Trent said "This song doesn't belong to me any more", he meant that it was a very personal song for him to write and when he heard Cash's version he realized that he was losing some of his deep personal connection with it. Seriously, don't just quote things out of context.

Cash did not make this song famous, it always was. Cash just did a watered down version that went mainstream.

  • @branciforte3241 you can not deny that cash made the song famous. even though i think cash does a better job with it i can't argue with you on which ones sounds better because that's all an opinion thing. i do however think that trent deserves tons of credit for writing the song

  • @thespennyb Well, I had never heard of the Cash version until I came to youtube and saw people arguing about who wrote it. As for who made it famous, well, fame is relative. It was already famous, just among a different group of people than you might hang out with. Cash did make it mainstream.

I like the Johnny Cash version, in a hokey, novelty sort of way. But considering the subject matter, the original is just much more appropriate. In my opinion, of course.

  • @thespennyb Also, I don't think that many people object to the opinion that the Cash version is better. I think mostly NIN fans get upset at the claim that Trent copied it from Cash.

  • Comment removed

  • @branciforte3241 as soon as you said mainstream i discredited anything in your comment

  • @AwHellBigTVs As soon as I read your username, I discredited anything in yours.

  • @branciforte3241 That entire argument is completely opinionized. You can't just point out that Cash's or Trent's is better. I respect Trent for creating it. But Johnny Cash made it touch more peoples lives than Trent's. It just means more to the fans of Cash because it made sense with his troubled past. And after his death Cash's version became much more popular because it just emotionally ment more. Trent is a brilliant song writter and preformer, but Cash is just... More meaningful.

  • @TheDownToEarthMan What? How does the song make sense for Cash? It's about a heroin addict in the depths of dispair, not about a speed freak at the end of his life after he found Jesus and fixed everything up.

  • @branciforte3241 You're a serious fanboy, aren't you? I don't know how many Reznor posters you have, but it's definitely in the double digits. Cash did a very good cover of this song and he was already so famous it would be impossible to not have it be famous. Cash will always be remembered... I don't see any movies about Trent Reznor.

  • @ElvisPelvis0 I don't see anywhere that I've disagreed with you about any of that. And I'm not a big Trent Reznor fan. I'm just tired of all these Cash fans swaggering around acting like he either wrote it or took it from obscurity to fame. The song was well known and loved long before Johnny Cash ever even heard of it. It just wasn't mainstream. Personally, I like the Cash version and I appreciate the emotion that people feel towards it. however incongruous the lyrics are to Cash.

  • @ElvisPelvis0

Cash has a movie? Well, Justin Bieber also, that doesn't mean shit

  • @branciforte3241 As much as I respect Reznor, Cash is and was a far greater legend than Reznor ever will be. While both versions are great, Cash certainly brings something very special to the song. It's a beautiful song and Cash bringing it to a wider audience does no harm at all. I also think the song was a perfect choice for Cash at the end of his life and a wonderful way to wrap up his legacy and life. If Reznor himself was honoured by it, then I don't think anything needs to be said.

  • Am I the only one that cries every time I listen to it?

  • @Gyurgyak indeed.. check this one out Johnny Cash Tears Remix.. its better then the original, at least i think

  • Respond to this video... That's a shameful thing to say, considering the fact Trent wrote and composed this song himself. Don't get me wrong, Johnny Cash did a great rendition, and it defined his career indefinitely, yet these are Trent's words. He most likely wrote this masterpiece when he was a poor, suffering, starving musician trying to get by. Don't take appreciation in cover's when you have no idea who the original creator was.

  • Comment removed

  • What's with the volum differences ????

  • "i wear this crown of THORNES[...]" Trent this isn't your song!

I know you might had to cencor it but... it's just sad that you picked Johnnys words.

    you're the man, trent.

  • @Deathcorpler Are those Johnny's words? I thought that Trent used those words in his radio-acceptable version.

  • fuck no! its trents!

  • its trents!

  • One of the most moving songs ever. Dark music at its best.

Also like Gary Numan, Unkle, Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, Portishead, Kosheen, Placebo, AllFlaws

  • @fluffycake1 Cash is King. How dare you mention those no-marks in relatiion to the legend.

  • @fluffycake1 Please tell me you are being sarcastic saying Gary Numan is dark music... dear god, I really hope you're trolling.

  • @Gyurgyak I know Trent thought it was a great cover after he heard it, but i wont believe he said that unless you give me a source or something. This song is the conclusion to A Downward Spiral, an album about suicide and many more things and this is also Trent's favorite song and, as quoted many times, most personal. Cash's version has a whole other meaning. There is really way more emotion put into this song by Nine Inch Nails than Johnnys Cash version and the overall aesthetic is also better.

  • ahhh so much better than cash!:)

  • @Gyurgyak WHAT!!!!!!! CASH MADE THE SONG!!!!!!!

  • @BaydenRayRedshaw Trent Reznor made it, cash covered it, but cash's version is to much better imo,

but still respect for Trent saying he found cash's version better to..

  • @BaydenRayRedshaw no he didn't dumbass, don't believe me? look it up anywhere fucking dumbass

  • @OpeningStatements .....no need to swear at me rudely .....i never swore or was rude to you ..i already know trent reznor made it i was messing with you

  • @BaydenRayRedshaw alright, i apologize, its hard to pick up sarcasm or whatever over plain text

  • @OpeningStatements yeah true :) sorry

  • I like Johnny Cash's version better!

  • I like that Trent's using Cash's lyric alteration now :)

  • @Gyurgyak and I did read him quoting about saying SIMILAR to "Cash didnt know where my mind was at and what i was feeling when i wrote it"

  • @Gyurgyak Sorry I didnt have my wikipedia up that was just me relating what i had heard about the story... Cash and Reznor are both heroes to me

  • @Gyurgyak Reznor said he heard the recording and thought nothing of it.... Actually was pissed someone stole his song from him,, he said Cash didnt know where his mind was when he wrote is and was very upset. Then he saw the video a few weeks later and thats when he calimed "this is no longer my song"

  • @StickyInADarkBlueCut not what he said at all

he was asked by rick ruben if he minded if johnny cash did a cover of his song, he said no he was flattered. when he first heard it he said something didnt seem right it wasnt wrong it just didnt seem right. and it was out of place. 2 weeks later he saw the video. when he watched is when he ralised the song was no longer his and brought him to tears if your going to quote someone at least be accurate dont twist thier words.

  • Reznors is better then cashes... BUT CASH IS MY FUCKING HERO... Trents good too.... but TR wrote it. ITS HIS

  • Cash's version sounds like on old man in a wheelchair. It lacks the passion of Trent voice.

  • @kreeper6 look i love them both for different reasons but the fact that you say cashes sounds like an old man in a wheelchair shows your immaturity and have no respect or understanding of music same lyrics performed buy two completely different artists and the song has two completely different meanings but both valid and as powerful as each other grow up

  • @Gyurgyak

that's for respect, which makes trent even bigger

if a legend like johnny cash decides to make a cover about a very dark and beautiful song like this, which is played by a rock band, points the greatness of the song and the creator of it

  • @Gyurgyak I prefer the NiN version, opinions are opinions..

Got solid proof he said that? The one i remember was ''Johnny Cash cover felt 'like someone kissing your girlfriend''

  • @Ins0mnia365 Lol you're both right and that was a horrible one to use because it's the same statement that Gyurgyak "I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane"

  • SIMPLY BRILLIANT!!!!

  • The difference between Reznor's original version and Cash's cover is the polar opposite age difference between the two artists. Reznor was brilliant in his insight as a youth, but Cash had perspective granted by time. Cash's version carries more weight; it has more impact because it comes from someone at the end of their life.

  • @Gyurgyak Idiot.

  • Beautiful version of an epic song.

Johnny Cash is Johnny Cash, but I thing this song is as amazing -in another way!- as the original. ;)

  • Trent Reznor wrote the original song. Cash just copied/covered it.

  • @AapKiNisha No, Cash owned it. And honored Reznor in stating that he was amazed that such a young person (at the time) could pen such profound lyrics... which they are.

  • @AapKiNisha He made it his own though dude, admit it.

  • In my opinion, both versions are amazing and really beautiful.. but they got something different that belong to each artist...

Cash's version is melancholy and kind of sweet; while Trent's versions is kind of hopeless and sad, but you can see a little light of hope in the last chorus... That's what both songs give to me... that's why I can not choose which is better :)

btw, sorry for my bad english xD

  • @Gyurgyak you don´t like to read between the lines...do you?

  • Both are great songs. I favor good Ol Trent

  • okay you think his is better tthen listen to his and don't hate on Reznor

  • Johnny Cashs version is better ....

  • @Altair2904 Thanks for clearing up a decade old debate. Appreciate it.......................idiot.

  • oh man ....calm down . no reason to call me an idiot cause i just said what i think...
