To those complaining about the adverts. This is BBC WORLDWIDE, emphasis on the "WORLDWIDE" bit. That's the BBC's commercial arm. I believe it's something to do with the fibres - in softwoods they're all the same size, in hardwoods they vary.

I believe hardwood or softwood depends on how long the tree takes to grow, not wether it's evergreen or not.

Most evergreens do fit the softwood catagory though.

I believe sequoia and yew for example are hardwood.

Would anyone care to verify?

@MissMysterics The definition of a soft wood, is one that has Needle leaves. Like, but not necessarily an evergreen. Hardwoods have flat leaves. Needle leaved trees Tend to grow faster and be softer, but there are soft woods that are harder than hard woods, or others that grow slower but are still softer ect.
