  • to put it short : the best tenor today

  • A big thumbs down once again to Jonas Kaufman. He doesn't belong in the French or Italian repetory. I heard him sing excerpts from Die Walkuere recently, and he was great. Too great. He sounded so mature in the role it was as if he should have been singing Hans Sachs!

  • What a beautiful voice. I hope he will look after it and like Placido Domingo still be singing well at seventy. Such a talent should be treasured.

  • VA DESENTONADO.

  • johnehagen, you certainly have a right to your limited knowledge of the art,try not to second guess what others are about . There is a great difference between being

a great singer and being an opera star.

  • He is the best tenor in the world for me. He is wonderful singer and actor. His voice has got everything. Power, great dynamics, full dark color.... And he is handsome too. I love him.

  • dangmills -the people you mention were

personalities that sang to whatever degree it pleased their public non were great singers as - just to give two rare exceptions Souzay , Podles -there is

a world of difference between an opera star and a great singer .A singer like Podles is a rare song bird-the ones you

mention cannot enter her world .

  • He is not a good singer . he tries for effects which are many and distorts

under guise of great emotion . Everything

is adjusted to suit the limitations of his

technique and ends up being about his

voice - his line is very poor and for those

unaquainted with "good " singing he is a success, he is all artifice.

  • @dziady1

That was the beauty of Callas, Corelli and Gobbi, their voices were perfect either... but their dramatic gifts and abrasive vocal phrases added character unlike the boring voices of Florez and Pavarotti

  • @dziady1 Wow - you throw around language about vocal technique when you have no idea what you are talking about. I hope you are not a voice teacher

  • @dziady1 - totalmente de acuerdo .

  • @Maripudelmonaco Of past singers you might like to hear Jan Kiepura sing this work - he does not

"fuss" it to death as does Kaufmann -Kiepura singing it reminds one of the comment Berlioz made to a singer

who fussed for "deep " meaning "Just sing it as written " was the Berloz comment .

  • Intelligence, musicianship and technique! In my book he is the tenor we have been waiting for a long time. I have heard him recently in the Met in Tosca and Carmen and it was overwhelming!

  • I think he is the best German tenor we have had since Wunderlich. In today's world everybody sounds the same. Like one homogenous "opera sound". Each nation no longer has its own identifying sound and styles. It's wonderful. If a tenor can sing everything, he doesn't sound amazing on ANYTHING. With that said, Kaufmann's Tamino is actually really good. His technique is wonderful and he's pacing himself in the Helden rep very well. God, the only Wagner rep he has is Lohengrin and Sigmund.

  • I'm down with the dark baritone color. much preferable to most of the wannabe dramatic tenors of today. kaufmann sounds manly and heroic.

  • FABULOUS - enough said - his lied is the best!

  • Grauenhaft!

  • Thank you for posting this beautiful recording. As to the vocal darkness and the suggestion of a baritone listen to his remarkable Mozart singing.

  • Interesting but not very natural and moving voice IMO.

  • awful, I agee!

  • Jonas Kaufmann is not only an excellent singer, but also a fantastic actor. He really lives his parts and I find it interesting to listen to how his voice, timbre etc. are modified by the emotions and feelings that he adds to the part he is playing. He totally identifies with the role. And he is also an excellent lieder-singer.

  • @mediglott

I agree Kaufmann has everything, he IS the character he is playing. He thinks deeply about each character and tries to portray him as if he really is the character. Apart from this and his most unusual and beautiful copper timbered voice, he has enormous charisma and presence and also incredibly good looks.

  • I really, really like Jonas ! I heard him the first time live this year in Munich (Die schöne Müllerin together with Helmut Deutsch) It was soo great !

  • La fleur que tu m'avais jetee,

    Dans ma prison m'etait restee.

  • the most beautiful tenor voice of this century.

  • Other than Juan Diego Florez, he is one of my favorite tenors.

  • He sings beautifully and does most things right and undoubtedly has great charisma. Yet the timbre and the instrument in the throat is not giving me the vibes of a great tenor. I still feel there is a baritone here waiting to come out..

  • Excellent ! Jonas belongs to a generation that has produced outstanding singers. I hope he maintains his place among the modern greats. There´s some tough competition ahead. But he´s still maturing, and has it all - prescence, excitement, voice, feeling, power and looks, and greatly appeals to modern audiences.

  • Super and above excellence. Voice of the century .- a voice rich in color , sound and natural tone. His height and looks all combine to enhance his outstanding abilities

  • What none of you realize is that Kaufmann is a baby Heldentenor! He is without question the most musical, artistic, dramatically believable and technically accomplished tenor before the public today.

  • i couldn't agree more!

  • I think many (well., some) hear the baby Heldentenor. I've always preferred tenors with that baritonal sound -- while I appreciate Florez, he's a bit of a one trick pony to me. As other have expressed, I just worry that he doesn't take on too much, too soon. Will he ever be a Tristan? I don't know. I'd love to think so (since we don't have a good one now), but that path is fraught with peril as well. For now he is simply the best Jose around -- he puts Alagna to shame, IMHO.

  • I've always been pretty "meh" about him. He's good, but it's a little over-covered for my taste.

  • I agree. Too dark and muffled.

  • I can appreciate his musicianship (his phrasing and sensitivity are of the highest caliber), but I am not convinced of his technique. I am curious to see if the voice/technique will be able to withstand the pressure of a high profile career. I guess we will know in about 5 years.

  • Haha, I LOVE THIS CHOICE! I'm surprised to see him there, but I like it. He has actually a very healthy sound. He is singing with an open throat, something we are not used to. Maybe he should stay away from the big Wagner for a couple more years, but I love almost everything he sings. Great choice

  • Oh Freude!

  • Ha! I wasn't expecting to see him but I'm glad. He may be my favorite currently performing tenor. I've discussed it before, I like his sound very much, I think he's a very good artist who's good with language and phrasing and varies dynamics nicely. Good actor too. However he's developed this annoying little habit of attacking high notes or emphatic passages with this odd little glottal sob sort of sound which doesn't sound healthy to me and can be tiring. But I like him and so far he's lasted.

  • One of the best renditions I've ever heard. I'm not sure how healthy his singing is for his voice, but the sound is good.

  • He does have a very warm and rich timbre. I do wonder, though, how long he'll be able to sing like that. It's not always the easiest of sounds.
