I too love Joy Division, but I cannot for the life of me think why all of Simple Mind's early work has been cancelled out by the bombastic and embarrassing later material from 1985 onwards?!
Great album another band that suffered from success and stopped writing edgy music........I don't rate U2 since War either. Not that they aren't brilliant, its just the hard raw music gave way to massaged record company engineering........
At their finest creative peak. "Sons And Fasso" was a sonically rich recording, both musicianship and production wise....I dug this out of the CD rack this evening for a play.. a very smart, savvy, innovative and intelligent band at the time they put this out this recording..."Seeing Out The Angel " is one one of those songs that is just totally timeless."Real To Real" and "Empires" are also really awesome albums so check those ones out as well.
Timeless classic even after 29 yr! Would sound out there if released today and totally underrated, a bit like early albums from The Fixx, another great band.
fuckin love ya early simple mind s best fuckinm music, its fuckin gets in your fuckin head ,thx boys, sons and fascination ,best fuckin piece of music after unknown pleasures.still love thius fuckin music forever ,tx boys
@tasimana Yeah, but not the Psychedelic Furs. After the success of their Yank pleasing turd of an album Midnight to Midnight, they came back with the best album of their career in the criminally overlooked Book of Days. It pissed on The Cures Disintegration, from around the same period, which was also produced by Dave Allen but sold about 6 times as many copies. The follow up LP World Outside was also very good. Richard Butler's a great lyricist even though I've no idea what he's going on about!
2 good albums---reel to reel and sons--then the line up changed--to be fair u2,radiohead and one or 2 other bands did mange it ur right, there arent many
Totally the best....I mean "ruudzwart's" comment above is true...they should have stopped by 1984...Kerr had serious delusions of grandeur...ALL there live performances started becoming a joke, with Kerr ad-libbing his own songs turning them into pseudo stadium anthems...the early tracks were loud, but had a certain subtlety to them...What a demise of a once truly great band that was fashionable as they came too!..Oh to the Futurist groups I grew up listening to...I wish they all retired then!
I totally agree " Dont think Simple Minds have ever got thr credit they deserve for their early stuff..most people only remember the more bombastic stuff of the late 80s"
YOU TUBE brings it all back with just a few clicks of the mouse.

I appreciate what this song is attempting to accomplish but it's not my cup of green tea with organic honey from Tuscany.

This was actually early Industrial music when you really listen to it. But damn if it wasn't funky either!

Forbes is one mother of a bass player they went tits up when he left!
davenight 2 years ago
good theory--certainly they went downhill fast after Sons album--bit like Japan without Mick Karn
when Minds played the Marquee in 1980ish i really believe they were the best band in the world and very few pple knew it--maybe not even them
such a waste
mikemurphy73 2 years ago 2
such a waste?
at least they gave 2 maybe even 3 brilliant albums,i cant think of many other bands that have managed to do that...

Forbes must be one of the most under-rated bassists ever.
It's probably no coincidence that his departure after Sparkle In The Rain was what led to SM's creative decline.

@BIGnCHOCOLATE Damn straight, I put this on in the 6th form common room in 1981 and the prefects all fell off the chairs.
