@Below, you did NOT want to stand next to it, sounded like a rolling earthquake. it was so heavy and loud. Well, when it was running. Also I would know, I have been next to one I froget were because I was like 10. But it is LOUD!
Love this video. The pictures are fantastic of the biggest locomotive ever built. It must have been amazing to watch one in action or even just to stand next to one in real life. Unless you have seen one, it must be impossible to comprehend the sheer size of them. The pictures where you can see men standing next to the Big Boy are particularly astonishing. It's just a pity that these trains were built half a century before I was born and about 6000 miles away!
we would all love to see one of these fantastic locos running again but the basic infrastructure to run them does nt exist, you ll need atleast 2 turntables big enough to take one just to run a service on one route, diesels apparently are 6 times more fuel efficient than steam locos, start them up and 20 minutes later drive away, steam is labour intensive and hours of prep before your ready to move off, i must agree, heavey engineering on the move could nt get any better than a big boy running
yeah the bigboy is the biggest ost powerful and overall largest steam engine in the world but sadley most of the bigboys were retired from service in 1961 and some retired in 1962 very few were still operational, mostlikely retired from service due to dieselization awsume video a wonderrful tribute to the locomotives that revolutionized the railroad industry
I have seen 4004 and 4005 and they are such amazing engines. It would be amazing if they restored one. Plus 4005 has changed a lot after that picture, it's inside now and in great shape.
Imagine that you're walking next to the track and at once you hear deep, very deep chuffing. And when you turn around you see a Big Boy. My heart would start beating like crazy! I would run after the Big Boy to catch it and climb on to it! XD
@5000TRAINS It would be very nice to see one of the Big Boys running again, but i doubt they ever will. There are too many missing parts and it would be outrageously expensive to rebuild one. And what tprdfh51said, modern day track probably can't handle the size of one of those engines. But someday I hope they'll restore one for tourism. The closest I ever got to seeing one run was in my fathers HO train set :(
I think youre absolutely right! oh, and if that giant electricity surge from the sun that scientists say will come, then thos pathetic electric and deisels are going down and steam is coming up!
@golfisgreat123 modern day track is far stronger and better able to withstand the stresses that Big Boy produces than any rail they operated on in 1950's and 60's.
How many are still actually in existence? How many were scrapped, how many left? I heard there was one they were working on restoring in Texas, what's the progress?
The Big Boy Will live again one day hopefully! even though only one has fallen there were 24 out there and the deisel that replaced it only had 600 more Hp than the big boy did but the big boy was much faster that the Centinnals!
4005 LIVE ON! (4005 is the one big boy that fell)
Although 4012 is to big for their turntable and they don't have a penny to restore it and the tracks are to weak. But to see one in steam would be a magnificent sight. We are already lucky to have UP Challanger 3985.
UP 4012 at Steamtown in Scraton PA I think is the best to be restored it's in decent condition all the others have missing parts. Steamtown was once a steam locomotive matence shop.
when u say 4014 u mean that is the # of the train right? they gave the ones they produced serial numbers (sorry i am a newb) ? would u know the largest model big boy that they built? I am assuming the best big boy would be on the last year of their production but i am not sure?
The Union Pacific 'Big Boy' was a specific class of locomotive, numbered #4000-4024, with wheel arrangement 4-8+8-4. All 25 were built to the same basic design.
The "Big Boys" were not the longest, the heaviest, the most powerful (horsepower) or the strongest (tractive effort) of steam power. Other individual designs outdid them in each category. But the Big Boy was the largest in overall dimensions.
In 1941, they cost 22 cents/pound. You couldnt build one now at any price.
i know u said that the largest ones were build in between the 40's years but is there a single model that is the largest of them all? id like to see and know the name of the largest model for the big boy trains if u can help me out:)
There are no Big Boys in operating condition. The UP Challenger is now the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. It became so, after Norfolk & Western retired there Class "A" 1218
This is a nice tribute to the 4000 class, the Big Boys. Yeah only with they could get one back in operation to run along with the 4-8-4 Northern 844, and the 3985 Challenger.
will be..again.....sadly. Besides the approximatley 2.5 to 3 million to restore
a "good" one.....there is only ONE turntable left on the UP system long enough to turn it.....there are NO "Y's" left to handle one....and todays rail could not take the tonnage and pounding of a Big Boy.
do not " pound " the rails like the steam engines did.....and the 4000 class (on the UP) " Big Boys " far outweighed the diesels of today. All the 4000's (that are left) are now in the hands of museums....whether or not you could purchase one for a private collection is rather doubtful..but
@trainboy94 They were supassed many times by other classes. They wer in all catagories well balanced. They were also the most advanced Mallet types ever built.
@cngowens The Big Boy was the largest locomotive in several areas, but the Allegheny was heavier. Many locomotives were more powerful and produced more tractive effort.
I would just wanna see it in action...and the best thing would be a big boy + 3985 + 844 + 6936
