If I was to be immortal, I would need someone else to share in my immortality, or else I wouldn't be into it. The worst thing I'd do is probably bring all life to near extinction, but I could never make all life extinct.
What would I do to gain immortality? Nothing that would harm other people. Miracles from stem cell research would be nice. You're the future doctor, so I'll have to see what you and your colleagues can devise!
I am a scholar. Languages are my specialty. I often say that it would take me at least a thousand years to adequately study all the languages and finish all the projects I have already started to study and write about. I could probably continue for many thousands of years: studying, analyzing, writing. I am a sponge for knowledge and I like teaching as well. As long as there are languages and cultures to study, and as long as there are people who want to learn, I could live and be happy.
PS: I wouldn't mind some of that jellyfish-style immortality where you get to be young again. And the worst thing I'd do to get it is MURDER (a jellyfish). There can only be one!
I always think of J.R.R Tolkien when someone asks about long and meaningless life versus a short and fulfilling life. Take the humans and the elves from Tolkien's world.
At one point in one of his books an elf explains how he envies the humans for their short and passionate lives and the mystery of death knowing quite well that he himself will live forever. The fear of death is what corrupted the human race.
Immortality yes, Invulnerability no.I'd like to leave the door open to dying before I descended into insanity.
As to cost...hmmm, not sure. Perhaps reduced performance, increased susceptibility to early diseases (as long as the statistical expected life span was still high enough). Perhaps a periodic regeneration cycle (like the jellyfish).
Hate to think I'd kill or maim someone for it but one never really knows until the situation comes up ^_^
Genetic engineering. But only if we were already leaving the planet in large numbers, because otherwise we would have even worse overpopulation problems.
Most people should not be required to live for any less or more time than they desire. If I had the choice I would want to live until I didn't want to anymore.
I would not want to live forever. It would be a curse. I would want to live until I got bored with life. When I stopped finding interesting things to do with my time.
I would not want to be immortal unless I could still commit suicide because otherwise my life would be infinite and the number of experiences could have would be finite. Also if I could outlive the universe I would be in for a whole lot of bored loneliness. My fractured mind would eventually forget when there was matter and energy to keep me company. I would drift forever in an empty void with no skies and stars.
If we could revert to a juvenile state without losing adult sense and knowledge acquired I think that would be great, I certainly wouldn't want to revert to losing what I've already achieved. There's also the question of how we would live a life when we know we cannot die in our sleep, would we be overly cautious about things that could cause us serious injury like driving? Would it make any difference to our outlook on life?
I would try the immortal thing as long as i didnt look like Ronald Reagan with the turkey neck and wrinkles! im not willing to do anything crazy for it..... ask me when i'm bout to die... maybe then i'd slap babys and push old ladies down, but right now I'd only tal\ke immortal gummy juice if i didnt have to do much for it!
Immortality? Without an opt-out, one is certain to outlive the human species. Not good. With an opt-out, one is certain to eventually use the opt-out and therefore not be truly immortal.
So, really, what most people will want is a reeeeeaaallly long lifespan. But that's silly because all we have is now, regardless of how many nows we wind up with. And that now is shaped by a fallible and finite memory that limits the time we can perceive. How is that superior to what we've got as it is?
imortality - YES, but only if I could be of a select few that could become immortal. If everyone could be immortal then it would be nothing special. Plus, with the current birth rate remaining the same, the earth would be ravaged and stripped of natural resources within 200 years or so. I guess leaving things as they are is the best option for the survival of mankind.
According to the Canadian National Climate Data and Information Archive (1971-2001) it is common for precipitation in Ontario to double in April and May (Taurus April 20 - May 20) over values in March. Celebrate your Taurus birthday, one too many beers (Canada...Ontario...Hello?) slippery wet sidewalk... blam, there's your damn p- value for broken femur necks. Case closed. Taurus' are also clumsy.
i dont think i would wana be immortal unless I knew there was a way to finish myself when I decided it was time. although i wouldnt do anything for it, id just take it if offered. also, the more important question is when are they gona put the "immortal genes" into mice or rats and see what happens. I know they did something similar and got glow in the dark mice but immortal mice would be sweet, it'd be like the green mile and they'd make great pets : P
The real question DrixDZanth is, what's your zodiac sign? :P
Regarding immortality, I wouldn't mind it if I was similar to the Highlander immortality(minus The Game :P). I'd need to know that I *could* die though when it came time by getting myself decapitated or something.
If I were truly immortal that'd be terrible, as I'd eventually get REALLY bored and crazy. Living for a few hundred years? Maybe a couple thousand? I could go for that, provided I could maintain a fair state of youth/health
As for what I'd do to gain that? I really don't know. Being a Vampire is right out I think, unless I could get a contact at a Red Cross. I'd like to think that I wouldn't do anything to cause others to suffer in order to gain my extended life, but brutal honesty compels me to say that I just don't know. I very well might be willing to do bad things once death is closer.
People have done terrible things to save their own lives. I don't think I can claim to know I wouldn't until I've been there.
It's funny that those born under the sign of The Virgin are likely to get pregnant. lol Immortal? Hmm, it's a tempting idea. I think it's because I'm so curious about everything that I'd want to see how things turn out. I wouldn't do anything bad to be immortal, but if it were offered on other terms, I'd probably say yes.
Dude, the immortal jelly fish you brought up...that's insane!! Awesome video, drix!!! By the way, did you know that the southern hemisphere is actually cooling down?!
I would like a couple of hundred years as long as it was in good health and physical condition, if I continued to get old frail and infirm then nah thanks I'm cool with about 100 lol.
I think I would like to be immortal if I could decide someday that would like to end my own life, I would basically have the choice of exactly when I would like to die, which would be nice. But I wouldn't do anything to obtain this immortality, apart from ordinary scientific inquiry that might result in completely eliminating any possibility of brain death.
Also, good choice of fallacy. Causation by statistical correlation is a mistake too often exploited; its important to talk about it.
If I was to be immortal, I would need someone else to share in my immortality, or else I wouldn't be into it. The worst thing I'd do is probably bring all life to near extinction, but I could never make all life extinct.

yep, id want that kind of immortality.
the kind of quasi-immortality that is still open to death from damage, or rather, not dieing of old age.

1. Depends on my quality of life, but a long life sounds great.
2. Immortality? Sure, but i would need a guarentee that i could opt out. Like it would suck to be immortal with no one else in existence.
3. To be honest, i would do what it takes. (crap im evil).
