Tommy Emmanuel is a great guitar player, but I find his appeal is more that of an all round entertainer. He puts on a great show, but I still think Scotty is the superior musician. That's not a criticism of Tommy, but a personal preference. Both will have you on the edge of your seat and picking your jaw up off the floor.
"He puts on a great show, but I still think Scotty is the superior musician."
I'd say, don't let TE's showmanship distract you, and don't have SA's remarkable technique do the same thing. Have you heard Tommy's "somewhere over the rainbow"? It's so musical. Then he can switch up into a boogie, a Beatles medley.
Anderson has inhuman technique, I've never seen anything like it. But, I find myself having a 'wow' response more than being moved musically. Depends on how you define musicality I guess?
Yes I have heard Tommy play Over The Rainbow. I think it is in my Favorites. Eddie Pennington does my favorite rendition of that song. I am not a good judge of whose best on certain techniques. Scotty will always win any comparison with me. I don't even try to compare different players. Too much stress. I listen to music for pleasure. Scotty moves me deeply with some of the slow, smooth style playing he does. You just don't get to see it on You Tube.
as to the pro. muso. who stated one of scottys problems is that he speeds up... as a pro muso. myself for over 35 years...any muscian or band worth their salt who plays with feel...speeding up is a natural emotion that is a human trait...if only they could invent a drum machine or computer that could copy that feeling...the one thing that cant be done as yet...keep it live...
Check out Joscho Stephan (from Germany) He could probably give Scotty some competition. They play different styles but both seem equally prodigious on the GEETAR!
Scotty is faster and more technically perfect. His style is more difficult, check out the 7 song yahmaha clinic with Scotty, it's his fastest and most technically amazing playing!!! 1980's He can still rip too. He is the best since Gatton and Breau. Put in there Johny Smith(prime 52-57), Wes_(prime 59-63), Jimmy Bryant(prime 50's-to 67), Django(prime 38-42, and 45-50 electric), Master Collector
As far as "playing too many notes goes," I don't get the impression he is forcing the notes, or trying to show off, so therefore i think he plays exactly the right number of notes...all the ones he hears!
I will weigh in based on what others who played with Scotty said about this session. That he is such a humble and giving person makes his guitar work so well with these musicians. Guiseppe Lupis does some wonderful piano work, as do the other musicians of course. On Scotty's speed, I am convinced he makes it work well, check out the sessions with Bob Saxton, another tremendous guitarist.
Boy, NateS911. Thanks for the informative response. I understand what your saying, although I still, think he should address the rushing issue, however I'm enthralled at your acquaintence with him and your generous praise of his ability. Sounds like a passionate man. He truly is a monster player. Marc Trainor.
I'm a professional musician, and I think he's probably the best guitar player I've ever heard in my life, BUT, to me, he over-plays a little too much, but even more importantly he rushes the tempo a bit and doesn't give the other players enough leads. Marc Trainor.
You are obviously a professional! Only a good player could detect that tempo faux pas.He may have the tendency to speed up a tad at times, but he has so much music in his heart that he can't get it out fast enough. As to giving time for leads, he had mercy on these great players as they had never played these tunes before. He is the most generous genius I've ever met. I wish you knew him.
Couldn't agree more with NateS911. Scotty's approach (and feel) for the instrument is unique and of course his technique flawless. What I see in the guy is a musician who has so elevated his prowess that few can touch him. And from what his friends post, he is a very unassuming individual. Hard to beat those combinations.
Some countries are the best at certain things, Australia are the best at Cricket, New Zealand are the best at Rugby, Brazil are the best at Football, but The USA produces The World's best guitar players.
davidgitar, wrong emanuel is good like Doyle Dykes and Jerry Reid but Scotty would absolutely blow the hell out of all those guys. Only people in Scottys class is Danny Gatton, Lenny Breau, Wes Montgomery, JOhny Smith, Tal Farlowe, Jimmy Bryant, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, Joe Maphis, Django, and Charlie Christian. Especially Gatton and Breau.
I was replying to what "Gattonmaster" about Tommy Emmanuel being "good". Apparently he hasn't sat down with Tommy 1 on 1 & and watched what that guy can do. Gattonmaster aka mastercollector is always causing trouble trying to tell people Danny Gatton is the greatest thing that ever walked the Earth. So I'll get back to what we all should be saying, "Awesome video! Scotty is amazing!"
cprattguitar; wrong. I don't cause trouble its just that I have studied more of the great players material than 90-95% of youtube fans; ask the youtube people if I know my stuff. I didn't say Gatton was the greatest; Lenny Breau and Scotty Anderson are better but Gatton is the most spectacular, and impressive player. Email me your address and I'll send you a 35 minute cd that will change your opinion forever. I have audio and video to back up my knowledge; ask Nileswest69.
@gattonmaster That's a very mature response I play and know of a lot of "unknown" players they are all awesome. Its better to enjoy the music and encourage players to listen to stuff well done youtube has a lot of "IP toughguys" that are rude well done m8 !
@cprattguitar In 16 years I have heard 151 different audio cd/cassette, and have seen 90 dvd/video of Gatton. Only one other guy can say that. With your address I can send you a photo and some material that will prove my point. I have been complimented from guitar fans all over the world. In 41-42 years I can say the most impressive for me are Danny Gatton, Lenny Breau, Scotty Anderson, and Wes Montgomery. I go on youtube to share knowledge and experience of great guitar players not to argu
I love Scotty's approach to the guitar, but I can't help thinking that if he played fewer notes, the notes he did play would be more memorable. Part of the problem is that the "jazz guitar" tone tends to be all attack, and little sustain.
I love this song and especially the way Scotty Anderson plays it! Why can't I find this on CD????

I have the feeling this guy could solo for a solid hour and not repeat himself...it is hard to grasp the depths of his talent that is for sure.
