you can learn to fight from many styles, if you are a fighter...and you will be sucesful if you cross train for agility and speed as well as versitility of more than one discipline. Im muaythai. Im just curious, no offence but y do SHOTOKAN karatekas adopt a side stance, when eventually a brawl calls for 1 to square off for a barrage? God gave us 4 limbs & 8 weapons 2 strike with; wouldn't putting half of it behind ur body leave u half as good? Im not saying dis karateka aint pro, but economy of movement-wise, it could've been less tiring than 2 bob back & forth on d toes, right?
@86HairMetal is the only guy on shotokan that has this freak style...and that uses many drills... if you watch others videos with shotokan fights...man! it sucks!! I practice Kudo Daido Juku, and have the same ideia of yours...but I have to say that this guy...is the best in his sport! OSU
@1maegueri I'm impressed by Kudo Daido Juku! Someday I hope to go against this style :) D only style of white gi arts that commands my respect was of a Kyokushin karateka... but Kudo is explosive! Yeah! As for Elwin Hall, what can I say? He won't be famous if Mike Tyson could kick!!! XD Man, what a raging bull in white!
@86HairMetal Fight as you want to fight. But I can say that "side stance" presents LESS TARGETS to the opponent, compared to "face stance". In shotokan, we use the whole body to attack, almost as if we were SPRINTING (running) on the target when we attack. We do not stay STATIC when we attack. That being said, fight the way you want to fight. No matter what your personal stance is, It does not make you a better fighter because you fight side stance of face stance. Check some Lyoto Machida video.
@SenseiShotokan Agree, to a large extent. I may be rooted in muay-thai, but of late I'm valuing the side-kick, JKD style; sprinting does have it's advantage. I never said anything about being a better fighter because of a "better stance". I did ASK if it were a disadvantage to not incorporate all limbs at once, just to protect half the "scoring areas" of the body. Perhaps the argument here is whether point-scoring systems embody true combat aspects?
@86HairMetal Greetings, oh I understand better your point now. Yes, point fighting is not the pure karate. Point fighting is a "sport" as there are rules. A "martial" art is by definition the art of "war" which means there are no rules. That is why a good "point fighting competitor" should always understand the limits of point fighting and bring his practices near the "real stuff" as much as possiblle:). You are right.
As for the stances, I am really sorry that I was not clear enough. I hate this youtube "words limit":)!. When I talked about presenting "less target" to the opponent, I was not really presenting this strategy for a "point fighting" situation, but also a real fight. But you are right, this is not really the best argument. It depends how you feel. On a personal level, when I am on a "side stance", I feel more comfortable in avoiding hit by moving backward or to the sides.
@86HairMetal But to answer to your question, I think that every stances are great, based on how you personally feel. If you watch Kyokushin for example. their stances is a little like Muay-Thai. But, we know that they HAVE to fight this way because they fight very close to each others, like sometimes in Muay-Thai. (In other words, you should adapt your stances). So yes you are right: no its not a disadvantage to incorporate all limbs. In fact, a better survival way. You are totally right.
@SenseiShotokan I value your point-of-view, really. I too agree a side-stance allows one to quickly burst back to evade heavy kicks for instance. In a square-off stance, taking a blow can be a bad idea sometimes. True. You speak like a real sensei; humble but direct. I'm sorry to say, but the karatekas down my block talk about owning thai-boxers all the time. It ticks me off. I hope to meet more karatekas like yourself someday. Til, then good luck with your training! (Osu!)
@SenseiShotokan Thank you for your advice, sensei. I hate fighting, really. My only purpose of striking is to see how my opponent moves; how he flows & how I can COUNTER it in return. It's an art - martial Art. Brawling is never what martial-arts are about. It's defence. I desire not to fight out of impulse; I only seek stronger opponents whom I can learn something in return from. Well, enough said. May our arts live on, from the teachings of our masters. May the path lead to righteousness. :D

@86HairMetal we adopt a side stance so opponents can't hit you square on. We fight in 45-90 degree stances to cover our chest, making the oponent work to actually try and hit you... i really wanna try muaythai though. is it good? reckon it's worth the money, and what style is best to learn?
@Neekatron Hello! :) I believe no one style is the best. Even as a muaythai stylist, I'm no expert in everything. You must work with your physique & specialise accordingly. In muaythai, kicks & punches are icing on the cake; it's the elbows & knees that we focus on (close-quarter combat). I caution you, a big part of muaythai is about taking blows at fairly close range + to exchange it in return! It's gruelling.
@Neekatron What is your physique like? Tall & lanky? A natural mesomorph (like me!) or compact & stout? If you're tall + got long legs, swift kicks are your oyster, so karate/TKD is your fare. If you're compact, you make for a good in-fighter or grappler (Judo, shoot-fighting). But if you're slow & heavy like me, focus on strength e.g. muay-thai, kyokushin karate or vale-tudo. What do you nautrally ace in? Striking or grappling? You should work around YOUR own abilities - then you'll succeed!
@86HairMetal In a real fight, groin kicks and eye finger jab are the primary attacks. Groin is exposed on square instance. In side instance you also gain more rotating power on right straight.
@86HairMetal the bobbing back and forth is actually more of a personal style that ppl ended up adopting. nowadays not many ppl bob back n forth coz of certain limitations and disadvantages it poses. if u watch japanese fighters, their bodies are very squared rather than a side stance, europeans fight with a different style etc. etc. it was never like "this is karate and this is how you must fight". its styles are constantly changing and adapting, but basic are usually always the same
@nikdat Hmm.. perhaps it's due to the loss of traditional training methods, which have fallen out of favor? I can't comment on karate as it's not my style, but like everything else in life, change is inevitable. I used to visit the Malaysian-Thailand border state of Kelantan to witness traditional Tomoi (Thais call it maemuay) training. No bags, no gym - nothing. I met a 70yr old man who sliced the bark of a tree with his elbows. Makes my muaythai training look like child's-play! O.O
@86HairMetal It is not the only stance in karate or shotokan. It is one of many. I think there are 2-3 stances angle wise. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. I am not a pro at karate and it has been sometime since i practiced. But as I remember, that side ways stance ; 1. Hides half your body so ur opponents cannot see what is about to be executed. 2. allows faster execution of some techniques like round house kick(common) and other unique to karate kicks that require u to make a turn
@midosi Yes, yes! I took some time to find out more about shotokan karate. Turns out, the katas aren't forms just for show. Each step & progresssion of movements actually masks the next move to be executed. Hence, the various stances, including the side-stance is meant to perform specific strikes. Truly, if I were narrow-minded I'd go around trolling that muaythai is the best, but no I think karate has it's own merits. It depends on the warrior, sitaution & not just the style. Peace! :)
@86HairMetal umm ,u use one shoulder cus,its easir to dodge attacks since only one side id facin the opponent, but when we attack we use the the two sides in order to put all the weight of the upper body and convert it into a strike!
@86HairMetal do you know anything about fighting?? you should try learning shotokan urself and see why its been the most dominant in the past years!!!
WOW that man is incredible!! he seems to close in extremely fast and for that you have to have very good foot work also he is focused on the target and all about finding an opening.. a very good martial artist indeed!
You know, I think that Shotokan is better than Kyokushin, they hit to the face. Kyokushin does not, they keep their hands down. Shotokan stops when there is a solid hit, that is a draw back it seems.
at 2:11: ushiro geri, ashi-barai,mawashi geri and gyaku zuki!!!! all make contact and two, the sweep and roundhouse kick, you can hear!!!! that is skill rarely seen or owned.
He is good and fast, but what i don't like is that he make many punches after he is knocked down his oponent, thats not beautiful for karate. In real battle you will need one powerful strike to end it, not many. But he is good, if he would train his body in kyokushin training he would be come a powerful karateka.
I have been training shotokan style too, but in real batlle in may become lose, because you have technics but you don't have powerful and hard body to go trough battle.
to be honest if you see the way the KUGB (karate union of great britain) fought you would see that as many or more knockouts occured by mistake with them than kyokushin on purpose! if you know your fighting you see that hall pulled his punches very well but he wanted to show that he "could have" knocked out the man. i studied both styles and kyokushin does not commit to the sweep enough to remain on their feet against hall, frank brennen, ronnie christopher or george best of the great KUGB.
I fought Ronnie Christopher when I was a skinny 16yo boy at a dojo in Exeter in 1988. Strong strong man, well, compared to me at the time anyway. Lightening quick too.
I am from America andI have dvds of Hall, Christopher, Brennan, Hazzard, Best, O'neal and others. It is a pleasure to get responses from even those who have sparred with them. Thanks.
Hall is WOW! Aggression, agility, power, speed, distancing, timing - you name it, he's got it! If only the pictures were clearer and the weird Chinese song was gone...
There are so many things wrong with your statement, but it only shows how ignorant you are so I'll let it pass...Hall's ashi barais are really powerful and he always follows up with fast punches and/or kicks, really impressive...
