Keen listening and cognition, though required, are often not essential for making comments on what is heard. I am surprised that people still talk about the term bhava, considering that there exist atheists who sing in praise of Lord Rama and Krishna and make money. Worse still, some of you who think that this rendition lacks strength may actually feel that an atheist's rendition is full of bhava. Ranjani and Gayathri are among a few today who are even capable of slow renditions.
R&G sings in chuka kalai in slow tempo unlike Seemmangudi whose rendring is in different lalam and sdhais makes the singing of song wonderful.Semmangudi has measure of each kirtana.
its perfect to sing this raaga slowly, and it fits the stateliness and weight of the composition. agree with prabhu that its wonderful the mrdnga player has the intelligence and taste to play softly. these three accompanists are really fine, the ghatam player, too, is always accenting, rather than annoying.
A couple of people have commented that the sisters sang this song a little slower than DKP and KVN. Unlike Durbar which can be sung at Madhyama Kala, the raga Nayaki is meant to be sung at a slow pace (Chauka Kala). I think R & G have chosen the most appropriate kala pramana here to bring out the bhava of the raga. I once heard Nityashree singing this at a slow pace in NJ. It's wonderful that A. Prakash played mridanga so softly without downing out the vocalists.
That's not true - Thyagaraja's Ni Bhajana Gaana in Naayaki is usually sung in a much livelier kaalapramaanam. In fact, even Ranjani-Gayatri sing that song in a fast-paced madhyama kala. So Chauka kaala is not necessarily inherent to the raagam.
DKP's rendition is untoppable. She sings it so crisply and a bit faster, but I was pleasantly surprised by this rendition. Very haunting and painstakingly achieved. I have grown to appreciate R&G. They avoid the distracting and pretentious physical affectations of their contemporaries and sing knowledgeably and simply.
Can't agree more with vegavahini and rockingvegan! If their rangapuravihara gets a 100, this gets about 20. This rendition sounds very very artificial and lacking in grandeur and strength. Their guNijanakRuta-vEdapArAyaNam gave it a feel of Shreya Ghoshal's light music! The sisters actually do sing so much better!
However, I must applaud the exceptional job that the percussionists have done! This pace and the mellowed form of the composition is difficult to accompany! Kudos!
Its very thoughtful of splitting the songs from the intermediary portions to have them remain separate videos in youtube. The play list really help out getting the complete kacheri experience. Good work.
On a lighter note though i just noticed how the sister dress themselves in contrasting sarees every year. I bet no one else noted this back in India who get to watch them in jaya tv alone every year :)
All performers rehearse, no one sings extempore. I don't know what do you mean by 'soppiness'. This is a great rendition bringing out the beauty of the original composition and the raaga.
I hate this "kozhangifying" style of singing - unnecessary soppiness (if that's a word!) in the name of imparting bhavam!!! The rehearsed voice modulations makes me cringe.
Three reasons why sisters this stellar performance excels;leisurely style they have chosen to measure word by word this immortal piece of Dikshitar.Secondly, their immaculate sangatis;sweetness is infused in constricted measure of miniscule drops extending listeners cravings limitlessly. Thirdly, bhakti laya embellished in perfect diction of regal Sanskrit that adds a glow of awe and shock.A great composition set in a bewitching raga Nayaki, sung brilliantly in an exquisite style.
I totally agree with Vegavahini. I am an ardent fan of Ranjani-Gayatri and was extremely disappointed with this rendering. Sudha Raghunathan once described how Patti's (DKP) rendition of the Kriti brings to mind the picture of Lord's chariot approaching us with kinkini nadam. That really does justice to this Kriti! This sounded very unnatural. While the sisters did magic with Rangapuravihara, this is no where close.
What a pleasure to watch this!...Thanks to Jaya tv and especially to you for posting....superb singing.Day by day their perfection in singing and synchronization is improving!
No offence meant, but there were too much embellishments at the cost of laya. They totally lost the tALa at the charaNam "pRaNavAkAra divya vimAnam".
As with other Dikshithar kRitis, DKP/DKJ's stands unmatched.

No offence to TMK - I really like his singing in general - but T M Krishna's rendition of this is so slow that it bores me.

Nicely rendered.
For me, the most impressive rendition of this haunting kriti has been by Palghat KV Narayanswamy. Perhaps, he sings a shade faster...

Listening to the great singing of this Kriti by the sisters brings tears to my eyes. May God bless them.
