The only time I saw the Clash live was at the Hollywood Palladium a couple of months before London Calling came out. They had Joe Ely and Mi-sex opening for them (Ely played a great set, but the audience mainly hated him and pelted the stage with garbage while he was on). The Clash did a lot of songs from London Calling, which, of course, we hadn't heard yet, and so the audience was pretty confused because we were expecting mainly material off the first two albums.
@robibm2003 Wait, I was at that concert. Didn't Ely and his guitarist dump a trashcan full of ice and water on some guys at the front of the stage after their set? I think Rodney Bingenheimer had played some of London Calling before The Clash came to L.A. 'cuz I don't remember not recognizing a lot of the songs. Anyhow, great stuff. And if you saw them at the Palladium, how come you didn't go to their Santa Monica shows in the other years?
Chicken Biriani, Gumbo, Dark Chocolate with hints of Orange , Oatmeal Stout, The Clash. Things I like to consume and that give me nourishment. God bless all four of 'em. 'specially Joe.
Saw The Clash winter 77 at The Odeon, hammersmith, London. I was 16 and my brother, Luca payed for me as a xmas present. But he was very stoned, and slept on the floor!!! They blew my teenage mind!
IM JEALOUS, james!!! but i'm really happy for you at the same time :D!!! the closest i ever got to was seeing this cover band known as 77. they acted just like them, and even looked a bit like them had they taken steroids, haha. but ughhhh, lucky bastard you were<33.
Seeing The Clash there were always those little moments that made a person smile. They could entertain themselves as well as the audience, couldn't they?
Does anyone know what he says at the beginning of this song (album version). I've been listening to London Calling since it's release (I was in Jr High) and have yet to figure it out.
"1-2-3-4! Hey, hey! Ooh! the kingdom is ransacked the jewels all taken back and the chopper descends they're hidden in the back with a message on a half-baked tape with the spool going round saying im back here in this place and i could cry and there's smoke you could click on"
i feel lucky to have not been at this concert. after this version i could have killed myself. cause this WAS IS AND FOREVER WILL BE the only band that matters. thanks so much hateful66
The kingdom is ransacked, the jewels all taken back And the chopper descends They're hidden in the back, with a message on a half-baked tape With the spool going round, saying I'm back here in this place And I could cry And there's smoke you could click on
No. before the release of London Calling, the song was always called "I'm not working for the Clampdown" on gigs. Well, at least in the beginning of the "Take The Fifth" tour, I have two bootlegs from the tour, and the song was always represented with the longer name. And before the lyrics of the song were made, the song was called "Working And Waiting". And on the record, it was shortened into "Clampdown".
not a big fan of tribute bands but when is someone whos a half decent musician gonna realise theres a massive fan base for the clash out there who wanna hear clash music live!!! or even better, topper mick and paul get your arses to dublin and do a gig. this music should be heard forever. rip joe x. legend
hey,i'm a yank who grew up loving the clash, and especially this song, because it mentions harrisburg, which is the name of the city i grew up in -- harrisburgs basically a working-class ex-steel and railroad town,so it seems to fit in with the song -but is there a town cross the pond with the same name?
no i dont think there is pal. according to the joe strummer book ive got he wrote it while on tour in the u.s...so i would imagine its about where u grew up
I was at this concert..Brilliant it was...Remember it was filmed...Joe played a bit to the cameras and in between songs mentioned it was for American TV...Anyone know where or how to get the whole show?
On this tour saw them too at the Electric Ballroom in Camden and had tickets for shows at Mile End odeon and the odeon Balham. They were cancelled tickets were exchanged for later dates at Hammersmith Palais....Any info on video footage relating to these shows very much appreciated.
Best live footage Clash ever? Possibly ... but the stuff from "Fridays" and the Complete Control from Rude Boy (though abbreviated) are also favourites, too
Happy Birthday Joe!

Woe to those to enact unjust laws and issue oppressive decrees!
Woe to those who rob the poor of their rights and deprive the helpless of justice!
They prey on widows and plunder the orphans.

Where will you flee for help when disaster suddenly comes?
Where will you save your wealth?
