People keep stripping out the screw because of the Blue Lock Tight on this small screw...don`t drill it out or try alot of pressure...simply HEAT the metal key with a small torch for a few seconds...the heat transfer to the Lock Tight and softens it or melts it allowing the small philips screw to come out without stripping...
Good instructions but F**k Honda for putting loctite on the damn thing! There's a shortcut to this called a drillbit. Pick one the same size as the screw head, and use light pressure until you feel a slight click. The head is gone and you can probably replace the screw once you extract the last few threads...
@rmavis869 Yeah, plenty of people have trouble with the screw. Mine came out okay, but as you tell in the vid, it took some pressure and luck. I also think the key works well with no screw as it seems to clasp shut well without it.
Great instructional video! The dealer could not have done a better demo! Drilled out the screw since it got stripped when I tried to unscrew with 0 bit screwdriver. But key clipped together perfectly. Will replace screw if I can find where to buy one.
@nataplace Great to hear. Thank you for your comment. Every time someone has success, it emboldens other viewers of this vid. As for replacement screw, how about maybe an eyeglass screw/ kit? Just a thought. I searched "tiny screw" and regret it. :-)
@justmoveable a couple things. 1. I've only ever seen such a small screw in the context of hobby-shop type places or specialty electronics. 2. My key clipped together pretty strongly without the screw. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.
@MrYoda1972 in my case, the keys worked just fine with the new batteries, no programming necessary at all. I suppose your mileage may vary, but nobody else has reported having to reprogram them. G'luck.
@FearAnEnd Oh yeah, mine did that too. As the batteries get weak, you have to be closer and closer to the car and eventually it will function only intermittently before it dies outright. Just replace the battery and you'll love it. Or at least that's a guess as to the issue.
Thank you for a great demo. Apparently the light on both my Honda keys turn on but I have to be very close to the car in order to make it work. Not sure if it's a battery or what. Can you please tell me if I can find the same screwdriver at home depot or any place you recommend ?
@sachin1sharma Oh most def you'll find the screwdriver at HD. Get one like I say-- metal where the bit attachment fits into. My first screwdriver (the chea $3 p one) was plastic and IT STRIPPED when I tried to use it. I went back & bought the $12 one with all the bit sizes, metal base, etc. Never buy cheap tools. And yes, the range will be restored on your key when you swap the battery. Careful w the screw, don't strip it. Good luck.
I wish I had seen this video before I tried replacing mine because I totally stripped my screw trying to get it out. Like this guy said, it's glued in there. Thanks Honda. I tried to extract it different ways and never made any progress, so I gave up and went to the dealer. I was surprised because the dealer didn't even mess with the screw. I didn't watch him do it all, but I know he just pried open the other end and replaced the battery somehow that way.
@joneswil1 Yeah, I really noticed when I did them that the screw is tricky. That's good to know that you can just pry open the back and get to it that way. Seems like it would break the plastic. My prior advice to those with stripped screws was just to drill out the screw and then go without the screw when reassembling bc the clips hold.
@ogbear ouch. So, you've probably already done this, but you need to drill it out probably. Good news is the clip seems to hold it together well without the screw (I think). Search Youtube for [drill out screw] and you'll see some good techniques. G'luck.
@SweetKiyomi Not when I did it to two keys. T'was all fine. I haven't heard of anyone else saying it would. I don't know what I don't know though I suppose.
@tcs20500 So, I got the screwdriver at the Do-it center (hardware store) in the section with all the other screwdrivers. Amazon.com is also an alternative. If you've stripped the screw, my only thoughts would be to drill it out with the smallest bit you can find. And gently. Once it's out, the key clips back together well enough that you probably don't need it. Good luck.

I guess I have the same issue. Because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I tried going to Auto Zone but those guys didn't know anything.
