Is the CD still playable in a CD player after engraving? it would be pretty cool to have like a hybrid CD/Vinyl. and does the material of the CD affect the wear of the stylus in any way?
@chococheese88 yes, as long as you dont record over the data portion of the disk, it will play. to do that tho, you cant burn more than a song or two, or you wont have as much room for the engraving. I haven't had any wear happen on my record player. I would say cd's are needle friendly.
@mbarry6 Is the old gramophone useful for the operation of any such recording, I mean after I finish recording, or must be the operator of the new type which is taking place with electricity??
I love you videos, I have a edison diamond disk player, I'm gonna make an adapter so the cutter will screw on to were the sound box goes, the reason i will do this is the edison players used a lead screw, so with that will will get perfect grooves!
So, my inkjet printer record cutting lathe project (with an hard drive as cutter head) is really in progress! This project should be shown in numerous parts on YouTube. Actually the cutter head is done!... Now, I must find a camera to post it on YouTube and show the part one of this project!
So, I have good news for you! I have got a mini camera for birthday and I have uploaded three little videos (about ten to thirty secs each at the moment, I cannot upload longer!...) on YouTube about the inkjet printer record cutter lathe. These videos are raw, with no comments nor any correction! You should find two about the presentation of the hard drive cutter head mechanism side and mount side and the third for the HP inkjet printer bare ready to begin the project! Have fun!
To view them, simply go to my channel "lhupa" and you should find the three little videos there in last uploads! Don't hesitate to show them to all your friends interested by artisanally made record cutters lathes!
@PurplePaintball actually I was just working on a daft punk cdrecord. its one of their newest tracks called "the grid" from their remix album tron legacy r3conf1gur3d. Ill have a vid soon :)
I actively serach for a DIY schematic to build an RIAA correction (recording) circuit to install on my project! But, I get only circuits for playing, not recording at this time! Did you know where I will find it? Thanks a lot!

You could use a graphic (or better: parametric) equalizer to make some corrections. The low frequencies should be attenuated; the high frequencies should be amplified, when recording.
There's some pretty good software around, like Adobe Audition, which offers parametric equalizer functions.
@ChazYocom Its been a while since I have made one lol I need to make some new ones, but I think im going to make new songs rather than classics. that's a great song, but there is already a real vinyl version of it.
@PJDooWop thats a good idea to have a string and another turntanble pulling it. the problem there is that 33 rpm is too fast. I built another engraver arm last night with a spring to provide resistance against the string pulling the arm so that its steady and wont pull forward on its own by the movement of the disk beneath it.
the problem is that 33rpms are too fast. so I tryed a 12 rpm motor to pull it across, and the result was 3 sec recording on one disk... so I need about 1rpm or lower.
Very interesting. Yeah, using a slow moving motor would do the trick too.
33s are too fast in what respect? You mean moving across the cd? Maybe play the 33 at a slower speed? Maybe an old turntable with a 16 rpm speed would do the trick. It really wouldn't matter what speed that turntable is moving as it would only be used as a guide for your cutter
@PJDooWop i mean like a string would be attached to the turntable. each rotation winds the string a certain distance. if it is going 33rpms that means the string moves "blank" amount of inches per min.
a cd has a little over 1 and a half inches of recording space. so that means that the slower the turntable/motor (whatever i'm going to end up using) needs to make the least amount of revolutions possible so that the movement of the string is as slow as possible without overlapping grooves.
any idea how to make it automatic ? so i don´t have to movi with the engraver with my hand
Dri0m 2 days ago
@Dri0m I wish I did. if I ever get the time I might try to work on something that moves it automatically.

@left4dead5667 around 2 minutes.

while you engrave the cd, do you move your hand from outer to inner groove or the needle simply guide your arm?

@mbarry6 any chance you'd sell mr one if these? I'd pay £20 or $30 depending on where you are
