ok most commentators are missing the point with Cox's comments-the point of saying 'Seven is perverse' is to juxtaposition censorial attitudes towards a movie with a guy stabbing a woman to death with a knife phallus, and one with a woman being given pleasure by an actual phallus, and how the former is 'R-rated' and[in theory] more accessible to impressionable minds
if you can't see there's something wrong there..simplified: I saw 116 beheadings on film before my first set of tits [pre-internet]
Alex Cox is a full-blown idiot. Everything he says misses the point entirely. I could talk about Cronenberg and Fincher with more accuracy than him, and I couldn't talk well about them.
On the subject of the perversity of 'Seven', I think that it's interesting that more often than not, the film focuses on the aftermath, emphasising the repercussions of murder, rather than relishing the act itself. I would say that the film is more thoughtful and allusive in its presentation of violence than Alex Cox gives it credit.
I like it when Alex Cox widens his eyes and goes all hapy when he's talking about the "guy with a boner" who has sex with a woman who has "sex organs"... In all sincerity, I only like Cox' first movie, "Repoman" and "Sid and Nancy"...the rest of his stuff is pretty forgetable.
wanna know why sex is worse than violence. because sex is reproduction. when people associate it with pleasure its not long before you have a whole generation who are raised apathetic. this apathy turn the person inward and they either become violent or again seek sex for pleasure rather than being useful to society or at the very least a good person. thats why its dangerous you don't get parents or carers anymore
It is psychosis, but I think it's cultural and collective. Playing with the context of images is nothing new, but the now media environment distorts obvious common sense perception. We live in a world of nothing but image, and the image is carefully manufactured and contrived, yet it registers as real. Forget the politics of censorship, people have lost the ability to experience competently. Video has democratized access, but the prevailing institutions have precluded any advantage to that.
Ive never gotten the love for Seven, well directed but kinda shallow- humanity is shit everything sucks, we're all doomed. Thanks for the deep insight Fincher, glad you went onto bigger & better things than that kind of MTV level stuff. Fight CLub was much better
I think your right about the comments alex cox made, seven is a well directed movie, and i can't see how it is moral as a film as any of David Chronenberg's movies.
Alex Cox is in a different league as a filmmaker than Fincher, but he wasn't condemning 'Seven' so much as illustrating a double standard in the censorship community.
This is just not a very well presented documentary, as it seems to gloss over things like this leaving a wrong impression. You can't trust this presentation, because it almost paints Alex Cox as not distinguishing between real pornographic sex and simulated violence. This is not his position, you've all been very shallow here.
Fuck Alex Cox comments on on Seven, that film isn't perverse, there's hardly that much violence, and its challenges people to think about morality, and their religious convictions,
"Seven" forces the individual to consider both sides of characters, good and "evil", with their respective goals they want to achieve. Whether you want to believe what John Doe is actually trying to do, to cleanse the world of evil, to expose the filth. Or side with the detectives who want to rid the world of him saying "you cant do this, your in no place to judge others. Your just insane." Its really a moral and ethical vision of what goes on in the streets.
Can not agree more.Cox seems to find horror films that are pure fantasy to be great horror when the truth is those films I find are quite funny because fantasy like that can no happen SE7EN will happen or could happen because man kind is a much more dangerous monster than a zombie.Cox is obvious a filmmaker who has never had a moment of seriousness in his own life or films which he does not treat with any sense of realism or moral duty.Fincher used SE7EN to spark a debate dualistic sides of man
@TrentH190 Yeah what the fuck is he talking about? I mean I personally think Seven is overrated as hell, and Cronenberg underrated as hell. But as Hollywood film goes, Seven is far more sophisticated than most.

@TrentH190 On the contrary, it is a very simplistic representation of moral ambiguity than someone like Cronenberg brings out.
