@noseyofni--- how would you know that? Have you asked her or him? Have you ever given them chance to talk and/or hv asked them how they felt without jumping down their throat ? Just sayin cuz I know ppl who are afraid to let the ppl they like know that they do for fear that they will start yellin or something .. Happened to my g/f the other day.. She was blown away.. This is greatness of song..
I wish that all you folks who keep using the phrase "clean version" would use the true phrase "censored version" instead. Can you HEAR the difference now when calling it for what it really is? Probably not. You don't see censorship- instead of the original creations by the artist you prefer what 'standards and practices' agencies or FCC rules regulate and/or approve FOR YOU. Or is it that harsh language hurts your sensitive ears? Please call it for what it is, not clean version, but censored.
@AbeVegaJr Nicely put, thank you. Don't get me wrong, I honestly like this song. For what it states, what it means, and how it came about (personal growth of the artist)- I don't see the need to 'clean' up something just to be able to get air time on the radio or whatever. Forget that! Too much sensitivities have already screwed this world up (and this particular nation *usa* especially)- friggin' stupidity reigns.
I like both versions, but "nightmare" just sounds infinitely more poetic. When I heard the album version, the word "asshole" in its place in the very first line was just so jarring. And I'm a diehard Alanis fan, so I am not at all opposed to outrageous or original music. But this version, with "nightmare" and the acoustic guitar segment at 2:22, which is lost in the album version, is lovely.
I listen to this, then I look at my daughter...then I remembered my mom, my sister, my best friend, and the many phenomenal women I know...thanks, Alanis...
Exactly, they are the same song. I got the exact same message from this version as the other version. There is no difference at all. They are the same songs.
I love the original, and this one is beautiful too. Hey, how could any woman settle for anything less than this? I couldn't...probably why I am single now...hmmm... ;-)
I totally disagree, this version is great for the masses but the other one says exactly what she wanted, that she can be an asshole, she can be everything she truly is and he still digs her:)
@ConnKidd I agree with you completley...I like when she sings about how she can be negative and what not...it is what the songs all about...he loves her light and he loves her dark. I think that the original lyrics are brilliant.
@STHGWTW didn't even know there was a dirty version till I looked for it here. The clean one came with Windows XP so never really watched it on YouTube till I upgraded to Windows 7.
I LOVE this song, * A*.

@saintdlee True, but I'm guessing people feel this is a tad more humane, and makes the song sweeter than what it is.

...most of the lyrics are exactly the same. its just the difference between "asshole" and "nightmare"
the "asshole" in the beginning gives the song more of a edge.
apart from that, there is basically no difference between the versions. so how can one be so much better than the other? they are the sammmmmmmeeee
