Also, the number of research scientists working in just a single field can number in the thousands while the number of total players in the NFL for example, is only about 1700 or so. Whether you find it in art, architecture, or fashion, it helps remind us that the constructs we have can be reimagined, just as math teaches logic. It imbues our thinking, and by extension our choices and actions, with a spirit of openness to alternatives, as opposed to maintaining the status quo. That's what I understand. So to me it's not unimportant.

@rorrt I I couldn't find that quote in Jean's original French. I don't imagine he was talking about high fashion, or the fashion industry, though. It was more likely his poetic way of differentiating passing trends vs eternal truths expressed through art. His use of "ugly" could be another way of saying "inappropriate". 18th century fashion, for example, isn't ugly. One of his quotes about fashion that I did find in French is "Fashion dies young. That's what makes its levity so serious."

But i do believe that in this argument, Cenk fails to see the value of this "high fashion". I think he fails to see that the high fashion is as valid an art form as art that hangs in an art gallery.
And i think the fashion of the 18th century and its "ugliness" is relevant. I mean when Yve Saint Lauren first came out with the trouser suit, is was laughed off. And how wrong those critiques were...
Avant-Garde is not meant to be worn as regular clothing per se its more like a moving canvas... i don't see what the big deal is, if you don't like it don't watch it and avante-garde has been around before lady gaga was born...so no she is influenced by avante-garde maybe.
I think the reason for the weirdness is bringing out the essence of their new clothes. It can also be symbolic of course. What's nice about fashion is the way some colours and fabrics go well together, and some don't. It's art. What's stupid thing about it is trends and brands and all that.
It's perhaps similar to concept cars at a car show- the designers allow themselves to think big, be silly/extravagant/not functional, and from that creative outlet perhaps come elements that make it into marketable, mass-producible, functional products.

I don't think the pictures do justice to the experience of being there. They are weird outfits, certainly, but it's to display the decadence; they aren't meant to be everyday fashionware, but an artistic display that is beyond the normal fashion show notion of covering up your body stylishly.

@BainLuke The problem is; science is mostly funded by the government, while professional sports is mostly funded by private corporations. Also, the number of research scientists working in just a single field can number in the thousands while the number of total players in the NFL for example, is only about 1700 or so. I mean how many people graduate college with a degree in one of the sciences as opposed to getting a deal with a professional sports team? Just a bad ratio.

These fashion shows aren't just for flash and glamour, many of the try to show technical and creative achievement in design and textiles.

It imbues our thinking, and by extension our choices and actions, with a spirit of openness to alternatives, as opposed to maintaining the status quo. That's what I understand. @rorrt I I couldn't find that quote in Jean's original French. I don't imagine he was talking about high fashion, or the fashion industry, though. It was more likely his poetic way of differentiating passing trends vs eternal truths expressed through art. His use of "ugly" could be another way of saying "inappropriate". 18th century fashion, for example, isn't ugly. One of his quotes about fashion that I did find in French is "Fashion dies young. That's what makes its levity so serious."

I don't think the pictures do justice to the experience of being there. They are weird outfits, certainly, but it's to display the decadence; they aren't meant to be everyday fashionware, but an artistic display that is beyond the normal fashion show notion of covering up your body stylishly.
