i havnt played Birth by Sleep, but this is a before commentary "I think the battle system is a waste of time. aLL those fancy tricks for little damage. I think its uneeded in the KH games. but....that my opinion right now, I might like it later when i do play it.

Zack (like most Final Fantasy characters) are younger in Kingdom Hearts than they are in Final Fantasy. Also, this happened 10 YEARS before the first Kingdom Hearts, so by that time Zack could probably have been dead.
