  • Calleja has such a caprine timbre; a shame he doesn't sing more pastoral music.

How he gets billed for these kinds of hefty roles boggles the mind.

  • jennifer's little pattersong part "HA HA... HA Ha" was great.. it actually sounded like a laugh! she was great... and she really opened up her sound on those lower notes during her little solo towards to the end

  • beeeeeeeh pecora schaf

  • he sings as florez, with nose.

  • lovely. mwaaaaah

  • whoa, jennifer laramore would have made an awesome magdalena.

  • Man-oh-man....Calleja is outstanding!

  • This is very good but why cut off the final note? Sorry to complain but it's very frustrating.

  • This is a stunningly beautiful tenor voice. Strong technique and chiaroscuro blend. Poor baritone, though; no squilo in his voice, and he's trying to compete with a tenor who obviously has a full lower chest range with more resonance than his.

Asian baritones make great countertenors though. Food for thought.

  • I agree with you, though, doesn't the tenor sounds a bit nasal on the higher notes? Maby it's just me. Also, sometimes he sounds a bit ... capretta-ish.

Overall a nice performance though! :)

  • A bit nasal, you're absolutely right! It's like he's trying to place it in the mask as apposed to using the support to sing piano. For the most part it's still a free sounding instrument. Definitely not a full lyrico-spinto but a nice thrilling lyric timbre with the fast vibratto that is sorely lacking in so many of today's young tenors. I'd be curious to hear how this voice holds up in an opera house without mics.

  • This voice has been "holding up" magnificently for over 10 years in opera houses without mics. It is frequently the largest voice on stage, even at the Met.

  • That's great. I hope I get to hear him perform live one day.

  • omg i can hear him breathing

the mic is to close to him

  • Well, even singers have to breathe

  • viva Verdi

  • Great, Maestro Bjorling was reborn!!!!!!

  • calleja ate a goat! haha

  • Calleja is way better than that clown Villazon.

Calleja deserves to be the star, whereas Villazon should be the unknown opera singer wanna be.

  • I have now heard both live many times. Comparing the two is ridicolous. One is already in his vocal twilight mid 30s whilst Calleja is an emerging tour de force. The difference between a Fiat and a Bentley.

  • you must know nothing about music and singing. I would recommend that you take some singing lessons to have an idea of what this is all about. I would also recomend that you read some books about the science of singing, and that you listen to recordings of real tenors (Gigli, Schipa, del Monaco, etc). In other words, educate yourself, moron!! So you can open your eyes -or rather, your ears- to finally realize the difference b/w tenors and a mediocre tenor- wanna bee!

  • Picapin. I am agreeing with you. Read my post carefully.

  • Magnifique !! Dommage...

  • bravissimi tt quanti, w larmore

  • Wow! I wish someone would post that final note by the soprano...Thanks anyway!

  • My goodness... WHYYYYYYYY DID SHE SO?!?!

  • Maravilloso...

  • Caleja has a very good voice for Rigoletto, but the mezzo soprano is a bit unsure and sounds half choked.

  • I just came home from the MET where Calleja sung Macduff. He filled the house and was overheard above chorus, colleagues and orchestra. It was as if his voice was microphoned in the hall. Incredible singing!!

  • I have heard this chap live for many times. In the past his tone was slightly nasal but has developed in a free and glorious sound. Recent performances I have been to: Traviata Vienna (Christmas 2007) and Washington DC Rigoletto. Incredible in both.

  • I agree...:)

  • Ah...caprina...lo has dicho perfectamente...

  • Oh my god! How could someone cut a high note! Please be more careful when you post videos especially if they are opera... AND if there is a high note at the end!

  • Please, don't cut the ending.

But thanks a lot for a wonderful quartet.

  • You are right darewolf!

    Thank you!

  • Wow, what a thrilling tenor! A little bit pinched on top occasionally, but overall very impressive. He reminds me of Jussi Bjorling.

  • some 'divas' prefer to sing the high D flat, i guess to show they got it in their range, but frankly the way Verdi wrote it with the Gilda (the soprano) singing the D in her middle voice, makes the harmony much tighter and more appreciated by the audience.

  • I disagree. The high note is absolutely necessary to bring this piece to a satisfactory conclusion, especially in a concert performance. I'm pretty sure Verdi would have had no problem with any soprano singing it, no matter what he wrote in the score.

  • everyone to their own. but having performed this before, I know the top note just seems that 1 extra percent over the top.

And from a contrapuntal point of view, the top D flat does, in fact, throw of the balance of the harmony, because it reads:

    Bass:Db (middle voice)

Terno:F natural (top of middle voice)

    Mezzo: Ab (middle voice)

and AS WRITTEN Soprano: Db (middle voice)

  • Then why does it sound so right? You can't judge vocal harmonies by how they would sound if played on the piano. The ear hears voices quite differently -- that's why a tenor and a soprano can sound like they're singing the same note when they're actually an octave apart.

To me, when the soprano drops down instead of going up at the end, it's like the climax "interruptus" in the 2nd act of Tristan...

  • are you serious? that last note the soprano sings sounds right to you? I hope you're not into any sort of music or performing. she has a great voice, but that last note looses its overtones, and the placement of the voice falls back and sounds 'forced'.I'm familiar with vocal technique and trust me on this one, that last note is not well sung (although i have heard it well sung by others).

again, all you hear at the end is her... it's the final line of the quartet, they all should be balanced

  • ... I didn't mean the last note sung by this particular soprano :) And anyway the tape is cut off, so it's hard to tell.

  • Good until the ending.. why did Hong do this? it's not even on pitch. I'm so confused.......

Si no te gusta, me importan tres carajos.

  • Bella figlia dell'amore,

schiavo son dei vezzi tuoi ....

  • This singer was 26 years old when this was videotaped. I have heard him recently...and he was magnificent.

  • There are a couple clips of him from another performance where he sounds better. I wasn't so much concerned with the vibrato here as I was with need for a more open sound. I can see what he's trying to do, and perhaps this was a bad day, but he needed to open his mouth more (!) well that's at least what I gouged. Nevertheless great potential I think.

  • Wow...Hong is SOOOO fabulous...but I wish you hadn't cut off her high note...

  • The tenor.. So low level in comparison...

Why is his voice so Nasal? :S

  • Precisely because I heard him a few times and can´t stand that goat "voce caprina" with that TREMOLO, I would NEVER EVER pay a cent again... also cause I can´t stand when someone sounds so NASAL!!!

  • If you know of any other goats that sound like this please let me know as I would instantly subscribe to their performances......

  • Great taste... I would!

  • Could you tell me,if you'd find something better than that? the tenor is quite good!

  • Honey... there´s far better than this tenor a million times. Go to your local music store or music library and you´ll find it. Precisely the tenor is the ugliest voice in this quartet. The rest are fabulous.

  • Having heard Calleja live a number of times i "rediscovered" him in Strasbourg last Sunday. How the voice has developed. No doubt this man is one of the most promising of his generation. Time will prove me right and he isn't even 30!!

  • Why does the recording stop at 01:49 ? Can you upload the rest pleeeeaaaase !?

  • Calleja's voice is exquisite and Jennifer is more charming and lovely than ever !

  • Excuse me... he sings well and all you want but... EXQUISITE is far too much to describe his voice. His vibrato is a tremolo di voce caprina and is always in his nose which actually makes his timbre a little unpleasant. Exquisit was Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Corelli, etc... not him.

  • If Calleja's age is correct he was only 26 years old in this video. The only defect I can perceive is some over nasality. Bar that this is indeed an exquisite performance and I agree with JuandDiego. Interesting you mention vibrato when the early Pavarotti, Corelli, Gigli, Caruso etc etc. all had it.

  • NO... fast vibrato, yes... but not like this.

  • Ok last time i am getting into this but for what its worth Del Monaco used to leave "hay" in the dressing room locker of Corelli...Corelli also is filmed during interviews where he states that he had to work hard to remove his "pecorino" and went on stating that once he removed it he lost the flexibility he previously enjoyed. In the end you are entitled to an opinion but you have to be jaded not to admit that this singing is of the highest calibre.

  • Excuse me miss or mr whatever... Listen well to their vibratos and NO NASAL SOUND and then listen to this guy again. Also listen to the QUALITY of their voices and then listen again to THIS VOCE CAPRINA... if you don´t find a difference... then I would do my best to let you know about the next nasal goat that I find singing on stage.

  • of course ezayitas, if you are used to wobbly voices, this sure must sound a caprino to you.. I strongly disagree.

  • There´s many examples of really GREAT SINGERS with fast vibratos like Pavarotti, Placido, Björlin and they don´t sound like this NASAL VOCE CAPRINA.

  • No voy a entrar a comparar pergaminos contigo, peor créeme, ciertamente no te conviene.

  • JA-JA-JA!!!

  • Angry, angry foreign man. By the way, that would be the masculine "caprinO".

Calleja is fantastic, and it is a shame you don't see that. I will take a little nasality any day over shaky notes, pitch problems, and forcing.

  • Obviously you don´t know what you´re talking about. And, I have to say he´s singing better than before and his vibrato isn´t like that always, thank God... but nasal quality is there and I don´t like it.

Risenti i dischi.

Pendeja!

  • Aha...caprina and nasal... what a beautiful sound... oh please... and I couldn´t care less if you disagree.
