  • writing is hard work very hard work especialy if you write scripts for tv or film becuase if you have a hit series or movie the pressure to write is intense almost crushing but, the best advice is to write and write and write if you enjoy what you do that will show in your work.

  • Inspiring to hear that becoming a good writer is a process rather than a gift.

  • Coors original for a one of a kind writer. Beautiful.

  • Rod Steiger!

  • Thanks for posting this interview. What a treat to see- I'd not seen Bradbury in person and vocal before this, and how inspiring he is. How neat it would be to spend a day with someone like that.

  • You see, Ray knows how to write and why he does it, with writers like him who needs Twilight?

  • Beer and cheese! A writer's fuel.

  • @macco360 I honestly could not stop laughing when I saw that. Ray Bradbury, in his white summer-esque outfit cutting off a slice of brick cheese and grabbing a beer, and then heading off to feast, lol.

  • lol look at all the empty beer cans on the kitchen counter : D

  • I saw Ray Bradbury in the title and I said to myself, "Fuck yeah, I'll click on this, it's Ray! How could I not!?" Glad I did still.

  • @tacticianSHG Ditto. :)

  • Ray Bradbury, writes, drinks Coors out of pull tab cans, and wears sweaters and ties with only his boxer shorts on. You will never be as badass as him.

  • Ray is truly one the most genuine writers of our times. He is as beautiful a man as is his words are to read,

  • nice inspirational talk

  • Of course he doesn't tell you that the probability of sharks are pretty good being it's Lake Michigan. That leaves me to wonder. There's orcas in water near Shelton, Wa

  • I liked this video b/c I written a story for mag called “Tabloid Purposes.” Now I wished I hadn’t published it. The idea was for an experimental story, but the writing was just toss. You realise that after absorbing Stephen King’s advice on editing. Stories won’t sell for editing & audience. Shakespeare’s classic English also awakens one to faults too

  • This was great!

  • Rockin' the white shorts Mr. B! -A. fan.

  • My favorite Bradbury book is "Dandelion Wine." He has an incredible gift but he is very humble about his ability. I make a living writing articles for an on line article service that pays on time each week. It is nothing like what Mr. Bradbury writes but it pays the bills.

  • "After ten years of writing, I had finally written something beautiful". -Bradbury

That's life isn't it? Hard work pays off.

  • Love his short stories the most.

  • He's a great writer and I completely agree with this video. I have been writing for twelve years, but it is only these past three years have my writings become great. In the past three years I have published four books of poetry, which have sold a lot. I have also published fifteen short stories. He is right. It takes a long time to write something worth while, in prose or poetry. Check out my video poems on my channel and tell me what you think.

  • @thearkangel12345 I did so. Your writing is wretchedly mediocre. I would firmly suggest that you keep your Winn-Dixie stock boy job, or whatever they have you doing.

  • @JeffersonDinedAlone You are an idiot whoever you are. Show me something you have done, and next time you decide to insult someone why don't you provide details about what you don't like. And have you published anything? I have published four books of poetry and a novel will be published soon. tell me what you have done. moron.

  • @thearkangel12345 If you have published four books of poetry, then list the book titles, the publishers, the date of publication, and where the books are sold. If you have a novel being published soon, then list the novel title, the publisher, when it will be published, and where it will be available for purchase. If you have published 15 short stories, list story titles, the publications, and in what issues they appear. If you can't, then you are a liar, and utterly full of shit. Verify it.

  • Comment removed

  • @JeffersonDinedAlone I do believe that you are simply someone who likes to insult people. I don't have to prove anything to you when you, yourself have put nothing up for review. talk to me when I can review something.

  • @thearkangel12345 After reading over my replies to you, I was unduly harsh in my comments, I realize. That is not an accurate reflection of myself, nor is it my intention to convey such an impression. You may very well be a talented individual who is still developing, and if so, then I wish you success in your pursuits. I don't wish to express negativity regarding anyone's interests. However, I would genuinely advise you not to make grand declarations, regardless of legitimacy or not.

  • Something wicked this way comes is a favorite

  • I loved the toy dinosaur in his house, lol.

  • Ray Bradbury fills my soul with joy... especially when he's wandering around his house without any pants on....

  • @DiscipleoftheBlueBox Met the man when I was in college in LA. Great guy, very encouraging to young writers. Spent lots of time with us and other college students. He was like a breath of fresh air after all those insipid writing and English classes.

  • A lot of white in his apartment and he's dressed mostly in white... seems like a "santero".

  • Love The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man.

  • Short story writing is much harder to do than writing novels. It is an old craft that should be instantly ressurected and honoured by publishers much more than it is. I write short stories, and I can tell you, it is the most satisfying form of creative writing there is.

  • @oldproji Word up friend. I'm hesitant to say I write short stories, only because I have no published works, nor do I understand short story writing fully. I only attempt to write stories in a much shorter form, forcing it into the short story genre in a way. As far as creativity goes, it's insane what happens when an idea sparks in your head, and it's like the floodgates opened and it all pours out. Not necessarily all at one time, but I think you get what I'm saying.

  • @oldproji

I've been writing for over a decade, with ten novels and over two dozen short stories written. Short stories are a difficult discipline, yes, but writing a 100,000-word-plus novel is certainly harder, for me, than any short story I've ever written. You can't generalise and say that it is for definite harder to write one particular discipline. It varies for everyone.

  • @danokkkrock Anything published? A lot of writers have many manuscripts completed.

  • @JeffersonDinedAlone

Yes, I'm actually about to be published. In September of this year.

  • @danokkkrock What's the book title and publisher? Or, if it's an article or short story, in what magazine will it appear?

  • @JeffersonDinedAlone

'Dereliction of Duty', published by Inspired Quill this September.

  • @danokkkrock On-line? No, I mean real publication; you know, a hardcover or paperback book which someone can purchase.

  • Just watch the video. You'll be glad you did.

  • I have a question that has been bothering me for a while. Everyone I ask always gives me a half ass answer. Here it is:

I have a story I want to write; I know the characters, the setting; it has a beginning and an end; I've been working on it for years, but whenever I sit down to write it, the only thing that I write is complete trash. I can write all of my other stories, but not this one, my favorite one. What should I do?

  • @masterwalkers I don't know if my answer'll be half-assed but I find it the same with me, (a favorite story I want to write but can't). To me, it takes time to write that great story, even if you know everything bout your story and your characters. It just takes time and if this story of yours is a hard one to write well that tells me you're trying to make it your best work. Good luck, hope this kinda helped.

  • @DetrimentDaSuffering Thanks for replying. And no your answer wasn't half-ass. It really does suck though. I'm 18 and have been working on this story for ten years. Its the one I know best. I'm not so sure about it being my best work, because i don't think people will actually like it. Its just my favorite. Thanks a lot though. I won't give up.

  • @masterwalkers - I've been writing for years (I'm 23 now.) I know exactly what you're talking about, but trust me, the time will come when it will write itself. First, I suggest you write every idea or story that you can write, and read a lot. A lot! So you'll be full of ideas. See, some people who aren't good writers can write good stories, but some stories DEMAND good writers. Perhaps you're not good enough yet for that particular story. But keep writing, and one day, soon, you will be :)

  • @masterwalkers Take up the piano.

  • Thanks for the invaluable advices from all of us, short story writers at Sci-Fi Almanac. Godspeed!

  • What is this from?

  • I'm going to meet him tomorrow (:

  • @AmandaAlexandraa You met Ray Bradbury? Wow, you are lucky!

  • The last line, "writing for me". That is what it is all about. Thank you for sharing.

  • Coors on the counter - awesome.

  • I LOVE RAY BRADBURY <3 As a writer myself, I'm inspired by his courage to speak out, when the world disagrees

  • Aw, poor girl. :(

  • His advice is priceless! I'm a writer and have taken it to heart! Yes, one accepted story does keep you going!

  • I love this man.

  • What's the story called?

  • So, if you can write a good short story every week, you can make it! Churn 'em out like King and Bradbury did. Send them out to magazines every week. Who can do that in today's world? Plus, as most people know, short stories aren't valued on their own by publishers. They want quantity.

  • As always, the great Ray Bradbury is absolutely right about all this. This is the most sober thing I've ever heard on the topic. Thanks for posting it. Godspeed!

  • he writes shorts in shorts,,,

  • I love your chocolates!

  • Best writer ever.

  • comma is a rest break during talking........! is like a loud sound or action point at the end of a sentence.

  • Giving statement....like

this is about writing and seeing what's it about.

    What's is this video?

  • When writting....have name on the upper edge of the paper, or on the line say your name. 1 Paragraph have almost 6 sentences

  • if anyone would be interested in readying a bit i have two pieces of my writing posted on my channel feedback would b appreciated

  • The Martian Chronicles are awesome. Especially the one where there are all the machines keeping to a daily schedule even though the master is gone forever. 7 O' Clock, time to get up....

  • Ray described GW Bush as an "angel"

  • @PostmodLovegod "Ray described GW Bush as an 'angel'"

Was it the angel of death or was it Beelzebub?

  • Ray seems to be a real guy. I always picture a timeless old man marveling at the world's wonders both mundane and metaphysical

  • I brag on every RB post that I spent time with him, and was in his home in Sept. 2009. I love to talk about how I know Ray! In his interviews, he is always fascinating. He is worth reading and listening to.

  • @Bluesnaggs Sooooo jealous! I would love to meet Ray, he's definitely my writing idol.

  • I just met Ray Bradbury in person for the first time today! What an amazing person, and at 89 years old still getting published.

  • Nice video. Thanks.

  • @nelshane76 : I think it's cheese, not butter.

  • Wow! This is my favorit writer! I can see he in first time! A great thanks YT and its creators! I have Q: Has TV some films made at base RayBradbary's books?

  • The short story is so undervalued by todays society. We need to go back to the days of the pulp fiction magazines where people can be heard and be appreciated.

  • @snoognz Totally agree.

  • @snoognz I agree so much. The short story is so undervalued today. I grew up in an era where reading short stories in magazines was so enjoyable. It actually inpsired me to write!

  • @snoognz Agreed. Sometimes I need a breather from novels and I just like to read a few short stories. Bill Pronzini wrote some great ones just a few years back.

  • @snoognz I'm with you sister

  • @snoognz Apparently, so is punctuation.

  • @snoognz They do produce annual collections of (SciFi) short stories. That's probably the closest thing to what you're talking about.

  • To make something beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • WOW THIS WAS A NECESSARY COMMENT.

  • The comment I posted was to respond to the rude comments people made about this post and was not intended as a slam on Ray (whom I like). But I see the postings they made have been removed now and so I too removed mine.

  • The Lake made Robert McCammon cry. It made me cry. It is quite possibly the emotionally powerful short story ever written--at least, considering how brief it was, it packs quite the punch.

  • what about the 'illustrated man'? loads of sci-fi stories in that book. and what an awesome book it was too.

  • I want to say that his literary genius was contingent on his ability to hang pictures, turn on a typewriter and blow up a giant Gozilla, but I'm afraid that I have to give it all up to those white shorts. Thank you, Ray, because scientists can lounge with cheese and beer! Yes they can!!

  • @fretpox I laughed out loud XD

  • when i read "the lake" i cried too. i love ray bradbury

  • nice shorts ray.

  • Bradbury may have been closer to the truth than he realizes. And I'd like him to know A.S.A.P. So, folks: Obtain photo of VICTORIA CRATER, MARS. Magnify 300/500%. Look into shadows beneath cliffs at left, not far down ROAD. Look for nearly round "BOULDER". Look Left. See BLACK PIPE w/WHITE Patch leading from round Hole/cliffs? Appears to be connected to 2 FOUNTAINS. Crushed STAIRCASE? Left. Path above. 3rd FOUNT/CISTERN just down rd, plain/day: Hex shape, Dragons base. SEE? Wheels, More! Look!

  • Yeah, that's what I saw as well.

  • sweet one of my fav authors ever,I love his stories,I mean from something wicked this way comes, martian chronicles, farenheit 451,dandlelion wine, etc. I love all those, thank goodness i got into him when I was a teen.

  • @animal90sFreak5 I feel the exact same way.

  • THIS MAN, HE DESERVES RESPECT.

  • this man is amazing.

up there with Shakespeare, Dickens, Steinbeck, Isaac Asimov and H.P Lovecraft.

    much respect.

  • i would separate Shakespeare and bradbury from the rest. their writtings are more complete than the rest.

i mean , asimov is too sci fi and repetitive, to a point it gets boring. lovecraft is great, but just in his dark genre, for example.

  • My favorite writer of all-time.

  • National treasure he is.

  • @dinoroxxx

He is so awesome genius and sweet.

    My Guru!

  • so i guess the martian chronicles is not sci fi...

  • a quote from Bradbury. he doesn't consider himself or the M.Chronicles as sci-fi

"First of all, I don't write science fiction. I've only done one science fiction book and that's Fahrenheit 451, based on reality. Science fiction is a depiction of the real. Fantasy is a depiction of the unreal. So Martian Chronicles is not science fiction, it's fantasy. It couldn't happen, you see? That's the reason it's going to be around a long time—because it's a Greek myth, and myths have staying power."

  • One of science fiction's all-time greats.

  • a legend and a great person

  • Yeah, you have to understand a little more about life and have some deeper feelings. Ray is a great writer though. If you just apply yourself little one you just might enjoy his stories. Try Classic Stories Vol1. That's a great collection.

  • Yeah thanks i agree

  • Maybe.

Until then, shut the fuck up.

  • Bradbury's advice for writers is superb. Stay away from Natalie Goldberg and Julia Cameron: They are self-help fleecers. Bradbury's advice is based on achievement (what on Earth did Goldberg or Cameron ever write except pallid advice?).

    Bradbury is the man!

  • Ray is one of my inspirations as a writer! Now, If we'd only had video of Ray's Mentor, Henry Kuttner...

  • What is this from?

  • iaresloth: It's from a D.V.D called 'Ray Bradbury: An American Icon'. :)

  • Ray is a writer's writer. He is so honest and direct. I also noticed he is a Coors man.

  • rod steiger narrating?

  • beautiful- he discovered he was writing for himself. and thats when he became a great writer.

    excellent advice.

  • 13Elphaba13: Firstly he's not playing young Ray, he's playing the character of a kid from one of Rays stories called 'The Lake'.

Secondly: How old are you? Because unless you're under about 13 years old that is a creepy thing to say! :S

  • lol yah im actually 19 but whatever haha.

  • 20 Years Later - I saw dear Ray ROLLER SKATING on the Venice Boardwalk. Yes, he was 62. Now if you know how crowded the Venice Boardwalk can be in the summertime, you can guess how skilled he was. I will always see him like that. Now, the flip side is that Ray Bradbury never drove a car but took cabs everywhere because he drank so much - Scotch, not Coors. But all that counts is his sweet heart and the little boy he always was inside. Peter Pan, move over.

  • hymnsing: Ray's own explanation of his being "chauffered" around was his witnessing a horrific traffic accident when he was fifteen, a traumatic episode that made him afraid to get behind the wheel and later led him to write the story, "The Crowd." But I also know he's always liked to drink, so perhaps the reason for his not driving is a bit of both. Cheers!

  • Bradbury was in his 'prime' in 1962 when I was 12 and he was 42. I lived in Beverly Hills, & he was often in town on business, walking around the office buildings where the show biz execs and agents did their TV deals. Bradbury had terrific body language. He was FREE and he was ALIVE. He liked pink shirts and white summer trousers. He lectured once at the old public library, at the City Hall, in an old courtroom! I had a giant crush on him for my entire young womanhood. Why did he get so old?

  • Just got Farenheit 451 yesterday! I think it's the best book I've read.

  • In the words of Ray Bradbury:"You have to know fear and apprehension in a way before you can write about it."

  • I found the origin of this excellent clip. It appears to be from the DVD "Ray Bradbury: An American Icon." See link below.

  • Add the following to that website that's named after a large Brazilian river.

    /gp/product/B000RW5C7C?ie=UTF8&tag=lanlob-20&linkCode=as2&ca mp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000RW5C7C

  • Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 opened my eyes to the beautiful world of literature. Bradbury is a master in his craft.

  • Goat cheese and Coors, the diet of a literary genius...

  • What's Coors??

  • Beer, Delicious Beer.

  • Great, keep posting! I'm a huge fan of Rays. Do you have much more?

  • This is great. I wish I knew the title of the original so that I could buy it.

  • If short clips like this were not shown here we would never now the originals existed. The internet has spawned a very odd understanding of how copyright works. There is such a thing as "fair use," where no monetary gain is had and the copyright holder benefits from the exposure. It's also known as free publicity. Without it no reviews or critiques could ever be done.

  • BE QUIET AND ENJOY THE VIDEO! geeze.
