@skrimpshidy Yeah I know they're related arts, I did an Aikido class for a PE requirement in college, which I know also relates to them. Do you know if Sambo focuses more on takedowns or throws?
@Larzuthul Not much really. Judo is 50/50 throws and grapling (but people that don't train Judo tend to focus more on the throws). BJJ is 80/20 grapling and throws. They're sister arts (people that don't train in BJJ tend to focus more on the grapling more than take downs..
Maeda who taught Carlos Gracie was a representative of the Kodokan and taught nothing but conventional judo. Judo descends primarily from the classical forms of Kito-ryu (already a non-combative stylized throwing art in Kano's time) and Tenjin Shin'yo-ryu (preserved in part in the Kime-no-kata). Judo descends from jujutsu but it is important to note that BJJ descended from Kodokan judo. However BJJ evolved into a fantastic art all of its own. There is beautiful 'ju' in BJJ's groundwork.
U R so right. Maeda brought Judo / Jujitsu to Brazil, but before that he had traveled and competed extensively throughout Europe and North America against all different western styles of wrestling etc.. So he hybridized his own style of Judo towards more of a wrestling style, less focus on the Gi, more ne-waza etc. in order to adapt to the variety of western styles he'd encountered.. In a way he really did have LOTS to do with steering the course for BJJ, besides just introducing Kodokan Jud0..

I beat a black belt last weekend and I got my green last month :p. I was a junior fighting in the senior division as well when I did it ;). Belt means nothing!
Good Job and a senior whao has a black belt may only be as good as a green belt and whaen i was 12 i was fighting in a senior pool against huge high schoolers and most of them were brown nelts and i was a 7th grader fight huge high schoolers and I managed to take second place so and i was a blue belt at the time those guys were 3rd degree brown belts so that proves belt color means nothing
yep. some juniors have done judo for 8 years say and because theyre young they cant grade high so they have alot of experience its possible for them to kick a higher belts ass, especially if theyre a quick learner aswel
Judo is alot different than jujitsu as i do both, judo is more of a contact sport. jujitsu is just a copy of many different martial arts. so anyone that says jujitsu is the same dont know what there talking about. The video is wiced best judo in the world, anyone wanting to start this would surely convince them!!
bjj does kicking, punching and loads of different types of locks, judo doesnt do striking or wrist locks only arm bars. judo came from jui jitsu and bjj came from jui jitsu so you could say they are almost the same
i didnt say anything about bjj not doing kicking or punchin, iplu si dunno wa bjj you do but in all jui jitsu classes they do striking as well as other fighting stuff. i said that it doesnt matter wa the belt is of an opponent you can still kick ( meaning beat) someone else whos higher than you ( higher belt)
i agree whit you ... there is no kicking and punching in Bjj. And it came from Kodokan Judo. ´Bjj is all about ground fighting, submission holds, joint-locks and chokeholds
that is misinformed, judo is another form of jujitsu that was styleized into a sport how ever once you pass around nidan judo has striking in the katas. also it depends on the sensei some of the katas and overall atemi waza become over looked do to the sport
Yes, Judo s a Branch off from Japenese Jujitsu. Brazilian Jiujitsu is a branch of of Judo. Brazilian Jiujitsu does not have strikes in it. Neither does Judo.. It might in Kata but who gives a fuck about kata... im talking compitition full resistance Judo.
I know the history too. I also dont train under the gracie flag so you (depending how much time you have put into the art) may or may not have a better grasp in BJJ however I do have friends and family that also jumped on the gracie bandwagon, so I do have an idea.
olympic judo is only part of the art. i do believe that shiai and kumate is the key to ALL martial arts (you cant go to baseball practice and not play a game) but I also believe that Kata holds the Secrets to that art (kata is every little planed movement ie when you perform a throw its kata, kata is also the long routines that kano put in his syatem) you must have good kata to be good at martial art. Now dont get me confused with someone thinks kata IS the art.
Im 15 years old now and my teacher promised me, that i could get my brown belt judo this Decemeber. No in December, he says im good enough for brown belt, only too jong. I think its pretty unfair, what u think??
I wouldn`t worry so much about what date you get your belts. As you get older you`ll understand that it`s not as important as you think. It`s your skills, your mind and your body. Just focus on learning and practicing.
don't worry about belt. Worry about becoming the best you can be. The belt comes with time and experience. Worry about becoming better and beating more people ;).
competiors and I think there are thousands of people more aggresive and faster than these competitors , eventhough these guys are from.......Japaaaaaaaaaan.
The reason why it is called "the gentle way" is because as a self-defence it isn't as dangerous or violent as let say jui-jitsu which means art of softness in which they teach deadly things like throat tearing and neckbreaking. But judo as a sport needs more than just gentleness(aggressive attacks and groundwork!)
I interpret it slightly differently. "Ju" is the concept of intelligent use of strength- through an understanding of momentum, balance joint weaknesses etc. "Jitsu" means technique or method.
The only difference between "jitsu" and "do" is that the princible idea of a "do" art is that it is part of a healthy lifestyle practiced for fitness of body and mind- not as something that you'd necessarily apply outside the dojo- whereas "jitsu" has no such conotations. I don't think the deadliness or otherwise of the techniques is directly relevent to whether it is "do' or "jitsu". Karate-do is full of deadly techniques.
wer have just started to do judo at school and just as fecoki said, weight and strength does not matter. i am the biggest person in all of our class and i got taken down by one of the smallest ( me 5ft10 and 10stone him 4ft8 and 5 1/2 stone)
yeah it would be great, then again not so great when they use it for fights at school lol. Thats one of the reason why they took out boxing out of school.
The All Japan Champs is an Open Weight comp and I think takes the best 26 in Japan. The only other way to qualify for this event is win a Gold medal at the Olympics. Only Japanese can enter.
Oh come on if you have any sense of what true judo is you could be content watching any weight class of judo because all have different skills and techniques and each person utilizes theirs their own way and it is interesting to watch. I am happy watching any judo no matter what the weight class.

Judo is more throwing someone to the ground, where Ju jitsu is more groundwork.
So Judo is more focused on standing up, jujitsu more on the ground with lot's of arm bars, knee locks, chokes etc. Also, Judo uses Hold downs

Judo is not all about being aggressive and fast.
I mean it may look like it is in competitions though. But It's all about being Gentle that's why it's call "The Gentle Way".
swpazn 4 years ago
The reason why it is called "the gentle way" is because as a self-defence it isn't as dangerous or violent as let say jui-jitsu which means art of softness in which they teach deadly things like throat tearing and neckbreaking. But judo as a sport needs more than just gentleness(aggressive attacks and groundwork!)
jonathanpantoja 4 years ago
I interpret it slightly differently. "Ju" is the concept of intelligent use of strength- through an understanding of momentum, balance joint weaknesses etc. "Jitsu" means technique or method.
JohnColt 4 years ago
The only difference between "jitsu" and "do" is that the princible idea of a "do" art is that it is part of a healthy lifestyle practiced for fitness of body and mind- not as something that you'd necessarily apply outside the dojo- whereas "jitsu" has no such conotations. I don't think the deadliness or otherwise of the techniques is directly relevent to whether it is "do' or "jitsu". Karate-do is full of deadly techniques.
